The Effects Of Stretching Prior To A 25-Yard Sprint In Female Swimmers, Melissa Lee Tippet Jan 2004

The Effects Of Stretching Prior To A 25-Yard Sprint In Female Swimmers, Melissa Lee Tippet

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

While stretching is commonly part of the pre-performance routine in many sports including swimming, its function has been a controversial topic in the research community. Researchers have found decrements in performance measures such as force (Fowles, Sale, & MacDougall, 2000) and torque (Avela, Kyrolainen, & Komi, 1999) after stretching. While still controversial, some researches have also found decreases in one repetition maximum lifts (Kokkonen, Nelson, & Cornwell, 1998) and various jumping tests (Knudson, Bennett, Com, Leick, & Smith, 2001) after the inclusion of stretching.

Because there is much conflicting evidence in the literature pertaining to stretching and a lack of …

Isolated And Politicized: The Nlrb's Uncertain Future The National Labor Relations Board In Comparative Context: Introduction, James J. Brudney

Faculty Scholarship

The National Labor Relations Board has managed to remain unusually detached or isolated in its decision-making even as it has come to operate in an openly partisan manner. There is a certain paradoxical quality to the coexistence of these two descriptors for Board conduct: isolation in agency performance ordinarily suggests a neutral separation from the political process whereas politicization implies a close connection to the elected branches. The explanation for this odd pairing involves a number of factors: some reflect political realities beyond the agency's ability to control, others relate to the structure of the NLRA, and still others are …

Innovative Environmental Management Of Winter Salt Runoff Problems At Indot Yards, James E. Alleman, Barry K. Partridge, Lee Yeung Jan 2004

Innovative Environmental Management Of Winter Salt Runoff Problems At Indot Yards, James E. Alleman, Barry K. Partridge, Lee Yeung

JTRP Technical Reports

This INDOT-JTRP project examined an innovative strategy for mitigating, and possibly obviating, the environmental impact of wintertime salt release within INDOT yard areas specifically associated with the generation and release of salt truck wash waters, whereby these waste streams may be beneficially reused in the manufacture of salt brine solutions suitable for subsequent pre-wetting and anti-icing applications. The associated environmental problem stems from the fact that these wash waters carry high-level (e.g., from 100’s of mg/L to percentile-level) salt concentrations whose uncontrolled release via local surface or ground waters will have to be discontinued pursuant to the onset of tightened …

Religious Switching Does Parents' Education Matter?, Amy Adamczyk Jan 2004

Religious Switching Does Parents' Education Matter?, Amy Adamczyk

Publications and Research

How are switching to more liberal religious preferences and apostasy affected by educational attainment? Previous research has focused on the relationship between religious adherence and college attendance. In this paper, I extend this work by looking at whether differences between parent and child educational attainment affect later religious devotion among respondents who at one time were Protestant. Using data from the 1998 General Social Survey, I test whether conservative religious commitment among college-educated children with less educated parents is different from commitment among the college-educated children of educated parents. Findings reveal that respondents who have earned an associate’s degree, but …

Assessing The Impact Of Movies Upon An Individual's Image Formation Concerning A Given Destination, Jeeyeon (Jeannie) Hahm Jan 2004

Assessing The Impact Of Movies Upon An Individual's Image Formation Concerning A Given Destination, Jeeyeon (Jeannie) Hahm

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The process of watching a movie is a common way to be entertained in this day and age. There are multiple ways in which people can enjoy a movie ranging from the big screen at a commercial theater, on their home's television, or even in a car while driving. One outcome associated with watching a destination movie might be that the viewer will be compelled to visit or not the location portrayed in the movie. It is a primary assumption of this thesis that movies have the ability to create or change an individual's image of a destination by its …

Aragonite Pseudomorphs In High Pressure Marbles Of Syros, Greece, John B. Brady, Michelle J. Markley, John C. Schumacher, John T. Cheney, Grace A. Bianciardi Jan 2004

Aragonite Pseudomorphs In High Pressure Marbles Of Syros, Greece, John B. Brady, Michelle J. Markley, John C. Schumacher, John T. Cheney, Grace A. Bianciardi

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

Numerous rod-shaped calcite crystals occur in the blueschist to eclogite facies marbles of Syros, Greece. The rods show a shape-preferred orientation, and the long axes of the rods are oriented at a large angle to foliation. The crystals also have a crystallographic-preferred orientation: calcite c-axes are oriented parallel to the long axes of the rods. Based on their chemical composition, shape, and occurrence in high-pressure marbles, these calcite crystals are interpreted as topotactic pseudomorphs after aragonite that developed a crystallographic-preferred orientation during peak metamorphism. This interpretation is consistent with deformation of aragonite by dislocation creep, which has been observed …

Modern Trends In Veterinary Malpractice: How Our Evolving Attitudes Toward Nonhuman Animals Will Change Veterinary Medicine, Mary Margaret Mceachern Nunalee, G. Robert Weedon

Animal Law Review

The purpose of this article is to trace the historical trends in the attitudes of humans toward non-human animals generally and apply that analysis to recent and predicted future trends in veterinary malpractice jurisprudence. This article is also designed to assist attorneys representing owners and veterinarians in spotting the myriad legal issues that have arisen from these trends in order to more effectively represent parties to malpractice actions.

Taxpayer Standing: A Step Toward Animal-Centric Litigation, Varu Chilakamarri Jan 2004

Taxpayer Standing: A Step Toward Animal-Centric Litigation, Varu Chilakamarri

Animal Law Review

This comment takes a novel approach in animal law jurisprudence by evaluating the taxpayer standing doctrine and how animal welfare proponents may utilize it. The doctrine can potentially be used for public interest litigation whenever a link can be found between a social harm and the use of public monies.

The Future Of Veterinary Malpractice Liability In The Care Of Companion Animals, Christopher Green Jan 2004

The Future Of Veterinary Malpractice Liability In The Care Of Companion Animals, Christopher Green

Animal Law Review

This comment investigates the factual bases of arguments from the veterinary community and of those that support increasing the malpractice liability of veterinarians. Combining law and economics theory with basic mathematics to evaluate the validity of these positions, it then suggests specific measures for legislatively addressing those parties’ concerns.

Challenge Of Environmental Justice, The, Sheila R. Foster Jan 2004

Challenge Of Environmental Justice, The, Sheila R. Foster

The residents of Camden, New Jersey do not live in a bustling city as do residents living across the Delaware River in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Instead, Camden's largely minority population lives in an environmentally and economically devastated neighborhood replete with two Superfund sites. Garbage incinerators, sewage treatment plants and polluting factories have been placed in Camden because the poor have historically been less likely to protest than wealthier communities. In 1997, concerned Camden residents formed the South Camden Citizens in Action ( SCCA ) association to confront the continued encroachment by polluting factories and sewage treatment centers threatening their lives and …

Vultures Or Vanguards: The Role Of Litigation In Sovereign Debt Restructuring Conference On Sovereign Debt Restructuring: The View From The Legal Academy, Jill E. Fisch, Caroline M. Gentile Jan 2004

Vultures Or Vanguards: The Role Of Litigation In Sovereign Debt Restructuring Conference On Sovereign Debt Restructuring: The View From The Legal Academy, Jill E. Fisch, Caroline M. Gentile

Faculty Scholarship

The market for sovereign debt differs from the market for corporate debt in several important ways including the risk of opportunistic default by sovereign debtors, the importance of political pressures, and the presence of international development organizations. Moreover, countries are subject to neither liquidation nor standardized processes of debt reorganization. Instead, negotiations between a sovereign debtor and its creditors lead to a voluntary restructuring of the sovereign's debt. One of the greatest difficulties in restructuring claims against sovereign debtors is balancing the interests of the majority of the creditors with those of minority creditors. Holdout creditors serve as a check …

Role Of The Bank For International Settlements In Shaping The World Financial System, The , Carl Felsenfeld, Genci Bilali

Faculty Scholarship

The Bank for International Settlements ("BIS") was set up in Basel, Switzerland in 1923 to handle remaining financial issues from World War II largely having to do with German reparation payments. It was the first of the semi-public international banks. Over the years its functions have changed and, largely since the late 1970's, it has served as the situs for the world's central banks and financial regulators to pool ideas and deal with international financial issues. A group of committees, com- posed largely of representatives of central bankers, now meets at BIS and has been issuing memoranda and drafts of …

Effects Of Trampoline Training On Balance In Functionally Unstable Ankles, Douglas Steven Hess Jan 2004

Effects Of Trampoline Training On Balance In Functionally Unstable Ankles, Douglas Steven Hess

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Training functionally unstable ankles has been performed using many techniques, producing various results. There is debate as to which method is the best. No studies have been done on the effects of trampoline training on functionally unstable ankles. The purpose of this study was to determine whether dynamic (trampoline) or static (solid floor) training methods produced greater stability gains (postural control) in individuals with functionally unstable ankles. Thirty-seven university students (17 men and 20 women; age 21.6 +/- 1.9 years; mass, 78.2 +/-13.8 kg; height, 177.0 +/- 7.9 cm) with functional ankle instability volunteered to participate in this study. Subjects …

Improving Performance On Standardized Tests Through Planned Interventions At Independence Alternative High School, Josephine Bell Jones Jan 2004

Improving Performance On Standardized Tests Through Planned Interventions At Independence Alternative High School, Josephine Bell Jones

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This study was an investigation of the effects of a tutorial intervention on the grades and standardized test scores of low-performing students in an alternative school setting in the Winston-Salem Forsyth County System. Students in this study attended Independence Alternative High School (IAHSP) because of low test scores, declining grades, and behavioral problems. There had been a continuous decline in the end-of-course tests scores for these students for 3 consecutive years.

During the 1998-2000 school years, the academic performance of these students declined by 10.8%. These students were discouraged learners who did not achieve in the standard high school program. …

Development Of A Marketing Plan For International Dual Degree Programs, Marla Friedman

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The problem was that the NSU Law Center needed to create means other than the juris doctor program to stimulate enrollment. The creation of dual degree programs was conceived with the intent to draw prospective students to apply to the Law Center. The global economy created a need for a multi-cultural and multi-lingual pool of lawyers. International dual degree law programs allow students to earn a law degree in the United States and another country by studying at a foreign law school while they are enrolled at the U.S. law school.

The research questions that were addressed included: (a) “What …

Organisational Responses To Discontinuous Innovation: A Case Study Approach, Barak D. Richman, Jeffrey T. Macher Jan 2004

Organisational Responses To Discontinuous Innovation: A Case Study Approach, Barak D. Richman, Jeffrey T. Macher

Faculty Scholarship

Research that examines entrant-incumbent dynamics often points to the organisational limitations that constrain incumbents from successfully pursuing new technologies or fending off new entrants. Some incumbents are nevertheless able to successfully implement organisational structures and develop routines that overcome these institutional constraints. We provide a case-study analysis of how three firms - Motorola, IBM and Kodak - responded to "discontinuous" innovations and the associated structural and organisational limitations that are typical to incumbent organisations. Each firm was able to capture gains from new technologies and develop profitable products in emerging markets, although their abilities to sustain these gains varied due …
