Desirable Properties Of An Unconventional Population Control Policy, Amitrajeet Batabyal Jan 2004

Desirable Properties Of An Unconventional Population Control Policy, Amitrajeet Batabyal

Articles

A great deal of concern has now been expressed about the authoritarian population control policies adopted by Asian countries such as Vietnam, India, and particularly China. Many of these autocratic policies and certainly the Chinese "one child policy" have failed in part because the framers of these policies have attempted to unsuccessfully circumvent a long standing cultural desire for male children. Therefore, in this note, we first propose an unconventional population control policy that is sensitive to this cultural desire for male progeny. Next, we show that this policy is desirable because (i)it is likely to ameliorate the "missing girls" …

Price-Volume Relationships And Stock Returns, Steven Gold Jan 2004

Price-Volume Relationships And Stock Returns, Steven Gold

Articles

It is popular among technical analysts to use high trading volume as a positive selection or filter criteria. Yet the finding in the finance literature are not clear on the predictive validity or even the direction of the impact of trading volume on stock returns. One stream of finance research finds that high changes in trading volume are associated with information asymmetry or differences in beliefs between traders, suggesting stock price reversals and return variances are higher with high trading volume. A second stream of research finds that high trading volume is attributed to informed trading, suggesting stock price reversals …

Jml Optical At The Crossroads: Exploring Growth And Exit Strategies Of A Family Business, Richard Demartino

Articles

The JML Optical case and related assignments are designed to promote a discussion exploring the potential impact of entrepreneurial motivation and exit strategies on firm growth and strategic change. The case recounts the founding, rapid early growth, and overall success of JML Optics, a company competing in the high potential, rapidly changing optics photonics industry. It also defines the emerging strategic challenges associated with the optics industry, mostly notably aggressive low cost Asian competition. The case places students in the position of JML founder and owner, Joe Lubozzo, who must decide both the company's future strategic direction and this own …

Implementing Hands-On Training For Social Workers Working With Psychologically Vulnerable Families, Lana J. Mcclain Jan 2004

Implementing Hands-On Training For Social Workers Working With Psychologically Vulnerable Families, Lana J. Mcclain

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This applied dissertation was designed to provide Child Welfare Specialists (CWS) with hands-on, home-management skills that were necessary in providing comprehensive services to the Court and Permanency Services (CAPS) clients. The CWS lacked the skills to provide clients with the necessary tools to be successful parents. The CAPS clients previously received parenting instruction that was limited to child discipline and guidance, child safety, development, and nutrition and health. The parenting instruction did not include the how to or demonstration of home-management skills needed for the high-risk caregivers to provide their children with safe and nurturing home environments.

The writer developed …

Transcript of The 2004 James McCormick Mitchell Lecture. On March 8, 2004, the University at Buffalo Law School hosted its annual Mitchell Lecture,1 a panel discussion entitled, "Who Gets In? The Quest for Diversity After Grutter." The Mitchell Committee decided to focus this year's lecture on innovative proposals to ensure diversity in law school admissions in light of the Supreme Court's ruling in Grutter v. Bollinger, which confirmed that race and ethnicity could be taken into consideration in admission decisions for diversity purposes. Noting that much of the debate about Grutter thus far has emphasized the decision's constitutionality or its …

A Continuing Whimsical Search For The True Meaning Of The Term “Product” In Products Liability Litigation, Charles E. Cantú Jan 2004

A Continuing Whimsical Search For The True Meaning Of The Term “Product” In Products Liability Litigation, Charles E. Cantú

Faculty Articles

More than a decade has elapsed since an initial attempt was made to discern the true meaning of the term product in products liability litigation. At the time, a brief history of events leading up to the adoption of Section 402A of the Restatement (Second) of Torts was outlined, and it was emphasized that what had at first seemed so simple subsequently proved to be somewhat complex.

An examination of cases involving the sales/service transaction, as well as those involving real estate, blood, electricity, component parts, water, computer software, and ideas, sometimes held that what was involved was a product. …

Secured Transactions History: The First Chattel Mortgage Acts In The Anglo-American World, George Lee Flint Jr, Marie Juliet Alfaro Jan 2004

Secured Transactions History: The First Chattel Mortgage Acts In The Anglo-American World, George Lee Flint Jr, Marie Juliet Alfaro

Faculty Articles

The chattel mortgage acts first arose in the southern mainland English-American colony of Virginia in 1643. Other colonies followed suit over the next 100 years. The function of the earliest chattel mortgage acts was not to legalize the transaction, but to declare it void if not registered, or to provide a priority rule favoring the registered transaction. Legislatures did not pass these colonial chattel mortgage acts to legalize an otherwise fraudulent transaction because reported cases indicate that the common law upheld the nonpossessory secured transaction prior to the passage of the earliest act in the southern states.

The Northeastern States’ …

Secured Transactions History: The Impact Of Southern Staple Agriculture On The First Chattel Mortgage Acts In The Anglo-American World, George Lee Flint Jr, Marie Juliet Alfaro Jan 2004

Secured Transactions History: The Impact Of Southern Staple Agriculture On The First Chattel Mortgage Acts In The Anglo-American World, George Lee Flint Jr, Marie Juliet Alfaro

Faculty Articles

The development of secured transaction law in colonial America was spurred by a litigious conflict between the recognizance and the chattel mortgage. The recognizance was the admission and recording of a debt before the court in order to secure credit. However, court hearings were infrequent in the colonies and often logistically impractical to the average farmer or merchant. The chattel mortgage was a more informal and practical solution to providing lines of credit on personal property. Without a system for recording chattel mortgages, lenders could not be sure in their investments.

In the southern colonies, the emergence of staple crops, …

Lessons From La Morenita Del Tepeyac, Ana M. Novoa Jan 2004

Lessons From La Morenita Del Tepeyac, Ana M. Novoa

Faculty Articles

The concept that the powerful and wealthy have the absolute obligation to offer political, financial, and social liberation to those at the margins of society should have special importance to those who are lawyers and professionals of color. People spend considerable time working through, working in, and centered in the dominant, or caucasian European culture. The legal system regularly fails to see, accept, realize, or believe when truth is presented at the margins. Nonetheless, it is at the margins that true legal and personal reform take place. Even in a friendly environment, where people are encouraged to step outside the …

Sheep Hill Community Tree, Kimberly Ann Fleischman Jan 2004

Sheep Hill Community Tree, Kimberly Ann Fleischman

Theses and Dissertations

An urban community is a fusion of new and old that is constantly changing. We understand better the plight of a community through raising awareness of its unique history and visual character. Linking individual and community experiences offers an opportunity for dialogue, especially as long-time residents and their new neighbors learn about their different pasts and explore their common future. Community building happens from within, when many individuals sharing common values create positive change.

Effect Of Repeated Dosing Of Delta 9-Tetrahydrocannabinol, The Major Psychoactive Ingredient Of Marijuana, On Memory In Mice, Floride Niyuhire

Theses and Dissertations

Purpose: Marijuana is the most widely used illicit drug in the United States. However, marijuana and cannabinoid derivatives have potential therapeutic uses. Studies in cannabis users have yielded contradictory results with regard to long-term effects on cognitive functions. There is no prospective study assessing this issue, and such studies may raise ethical issues in humans, whereas mice have been shown to exhibit similar cannabinoid-mediated behaviors as humans. The purpose of this study was to assess the consequences of chronic administration of Δ9-THC, the major psychoactive component of marijuana, in a mouse memory model. Methods: In Experiment 1, the dose-response relationship …

Antioxidants As Risk Factors For Gingival Bleeding, Hee-Jeong Bahng Jan 2004

Antioxidants As Risk Factors For Gingival Bleeding, Hee-Jeong Bahng

Theses and Dissertations

Background: Studies of gingival bleeding and the effects of antioxidants on extracellular matrix and immunologic and inflammatory responses provide a rationale for hypothesizing that antioxidants reduce the risk for gingival bleeding. Methods: This study evaluated the role of antioxidants as contributing risk factors for gingival bleeding utilizing the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NAHNES III). A sample of 18,825 adults (20 to ≥ 90 years of age), with dental measurement and assessment of serum levels of antioxidants were included in the study. Gingival bleeding was defined as those who had more than 30 percent of gingival bleeding in 28 …

Influence Of A 3-Step Disinfection Procedure On Dentin Bond Strength, Maria Pappas Jan 2004

Influence Of A 3-Step Disinfection Procedure On Dentin Bond Strength, Maria Pappas

Theses and Dissertations

Statement of problem. Clinicians have used disinfection materials to remove surface contaminants during cavity preparation. It has been postulated that disinfection materials may negatively affect shear bond strength of restorative materials. If so, large numbers of restorations may be predestined for early failure with the use of a disinfection protocol.Purpose. To determine whether there is a difference in the bond strength between dentin and composite resin with a 3-step disinfection technique compared to a conventional bonding technique without the additional disinfection protocol.Material and Methods. Sixty human molar teeth were sectioned parallel to the occlusal surface to expose mid-coronal dentin and …
