A Million Secondchandraview Of Cassiopeia A, Una Hwang, J. Martin Laming, Carles Badenes, Fred Berendse, John Blondin, Denis Cioffi, Tracey Delaney, Daniel Dewey, Robert Fesen

Dartmouth Scholarship

We introduce a million second observation of the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A with the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. The bipolar structure of the Si-rich ejecta (northeast jet and southwest counterpart) is clearly evident in the new images, and their chemical similarity is confirmed by their spectra. These are most likely due to jets of ejecta as opposed to cavities in the circumstellar medium, since we can reject simple models for the latter. The properties of these jets and the Fe-rich ejecta will provide clues to the explosion of Cas A.

Nevada Supreme Court Summaries

City of Mesquite Mayor Charles Horne appealed a Declaratory Judgment of the Eighth Judicial District Court, holding City of Mesquite initiative ordinance MQ1 to be invalid as conflicting with state statutes, but that the severability clause of the ordinance evaded total invalidity. Furthermore, that same declaratory judgment held City of Mesquite initiative ordinance MQ3 to be totally invalid as conflicting with state statutes.

Summary Of U. And Community C. Sys. Of Nev. V. Nevadans For Sound Gov't., 120 Nev. Adv. Op. 81, Clarke Walton

Nevada Supreme Court Summaries

Respondent, Nevadans for Sound Government (NSG) is a political organization that gathers signatures on government owned property. NSG filed an action in district court alleging actions taken by Regional Transportation Commission of Washoe County (RTC) and University and Community College System of Nevada (UCCSN) unlawfully restricted access to RTC and UCCSN properties for signature collecting purposes. The district court concluded that certain actions by appellants unlawfully violated respondent's constitutional and statutory rights. The supreme court reversed the decision that respondent's constitutional rights were violated, and partially affirmed the decision that its statutory rights were violated.

In Situ Anomalous Small-Angle X-Ray Scattering From Metal Particles In Supported-Metal Catalysts. I. Theory, H. Brumberger, D. Hagrman, Jerry Goodisman, K. D. Finkelstein

Chemistry - All Scholarship

A supported-metal catalyst can be considered as a mixture of three homogeneous phases: support, void and metal. Information about the metal phase alone can be obtained using anomalous small-angle X-ray scattering (ASAXS), which requires measuring the SAXS for two different wavelengths near the metal's absorption edge. Herein, the conditions that must be obtained so that the difference between the two scattering profiles gives the scattering of the metal alone are presented. In a following contribution, the analysis will be applied to in situ ASAXS measurements made on mordenite impregnated with platinum metal while the temperature and composition of gas in …

3d Simulation Of Prints For Improved Soft Proofing, Rohit Patil, Mark Fairchild, Garrett Johnson Nov 2004

3d Simulation Of Prints For Improved Soft Proofing, Rohit Patil, Mark Fairchild, Garrett Johnson

Presentations and other scholarship

A display tool has been developed to perform simulation and three-dimensional rendering of prints in the quest towards achieving improved soft proofing capabilities. It was desired through this 3D simulation that the gloss and surface properties of hard-copy prints be represented on a display, which are absent in current 2D soft proofing workflows. The procedure is described along with the relevant historical work. The major components of the workflow are identified as: the gloss prediction model, and the representation of this gloss on a display using computer graphics rendering techniques. Psychophysical experiments were carried out to evaluate the usefulness of …

Testing Hdr Image Rendering Algorithms, Jiangtao Kuang, Hiroshi Yamaguchi, Garrett Johnson, Mark Fairchild

Presentations and other scholarship

Eight high-dynamic-range image rendering algorithms were tested using ten high-dynamic-range pictorial images. A large-scale paired comparison psychophysical experiment was developed containing two sections, comparing the overall rendering performances and grayscale tone mapping performance respectively. An interval scale of preference was created to evaluate the rendering results. The results showed the consistency of tone-mapping performance with the overall rendering results, and illustrated that Durand and Dorsey’s bilateral fast filtering technique and Reinhard’s photographic tone reproduction have the best rendering performance overall. The goal of this experiment was to establish a sound testing and evaluation methodology based on psychophysical experiment results for …

Bayesian Inference In Forecasting Volcanic Hazards: An Example From Armenia, Jennifer N. Weller Nov 2004

Bayesian Inference In Forecasting Volcanic Hazards: An Example From Armenia, Jennifer N. Weller

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Scientists worldwide are increasingly faced with the need to assess geologic hazards for very infrequent events that have high consequence, for instance, in siting nuclear facilities for volcanic hazards. One of the methods currently being developed for such assessments is the Bayesian method. This paper outlines the Bayesian technique by focusing on the volcanic hazard assessment for the Armenia Nuclear Power Plant, (ANPP), which is located in a Quaternary volcanic field. The Bayesian method presented in this paper relies on the development of a probabilistic model based on the spatial distribution of past volcanic events and a geologic process model. …

Teaching And Learning With Technology At The Rochester Institute Of Technology, Joeann Humbert, Karen Vignare

RIT Digital Archives

The Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) is a private 4-year college in upstate New York with approximately 15,000 students (http://www.rit.edu/facts.html). RIT is comprised of eight colleges and is focused on providing technical and professional career training. As the demand for workers with these skills has grown, so has RIT. Distance learning at RIT started in earnest in 1979 with telecourses. The goal then as it is now is to make learning more accessible to students. In the mid-1980’s we began incorporating email and online discussion boards into telecourses. By 1991, RIT had started completely online distance learning programs and courses. …
