Researchers Explore Swamp Plants' Potential In Battling Breast Cancer, Mitchell Diggs

University of Mississippi News

OXFORD, Miss. - Many people might imagine the search for new cancer drugs goes on in sterile laboratories, where scientists wearing white coats use shiny equipment to synthesize medicines for zapping tumors. But University of Mississippi researchers - wearing hip waders to search through wetlands in rural Benton and Desoto counties - may have discovered in the marshes a powerful new weapon for fighting breast cancer.

The Effects Of Militant Press On Nigeria's Democratic Evolution, Oluwaniran Malaolu Nov 2004

The Effects Of Militant Press On Nigeria's Democratic Evolution, Oluwaniran Malaolu

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This is an in-depth study of the Nigerian press, the ubiquitous behemoth which called itself the "defender" of Nigeria's national independence and the last "hope" of the common man. It's a bold attempt to critically examine its antecedents, its evolution or development especially the historical, political, technological and socio-economic events that had impacted its growth, its world views and ideologies. It's a thorough assessment of the press' influence on Nigeria's socio-economic and political development, as well as the suitability of its tactics and posturing toward attaining its set goals of economic and political emancipation of Nigerians. Most importantly, this study …

Simulation Of Gate Lag And Current Collapse In Gallium Nitride Field-Effect Transistors, N. Braga, R. Mickevicius, R. Gaska, M. S. Shur, M. Asif Khan, Grigory Simin Nov 2004

Simulation Of Gate Lag And Current Collapse In Gallium Nitride Field-Effect Transistors, N. Braga, R. Mickevicius, R. Gaska, M. S. Shur, M. Asif Khan, Grigory Simin

Faculty Publications

Results of two-dimensional numerical simulations of gate lag and current collapse in GaN heterostructurefield-effect transistors are presented. Simulation results clearly show that current collapse takes place only if an enhanced trapping occurs under the gate edges. Hot electrons play an instrumental role in the collapse mechanism. The simulation results also link the current collapse with electrons spreading into the buffer layer and confirm that a better electron localization (as in a double heterostructurefield-effect transistor) can dramatically reduce current collapse.

The Northwest’S Phantom Pool: Superintendent Certificate Holders Who Do Not Plan To Apply And Why, Mimi Wolverton Nov 2004

The Northwest’S Phantom Pool: Superintendent Certificate Holders Who Do Not Plan To Apply And Why, Mimi Wolverton

The Rural Educator

Responses gathered in a recent study of the superintendency in the Pacific Northwest suggest that less than 25% of sitting superintendents in the year 2000 were under the age of 50; and 40% of those who were 50 years or older planned to retire within the next four years. While the pool of potential applicants includes over 1,000 superintendent certificate holders, fewer than 150 of respondents in the same study planned to apply for upcoming vacancies. This article examines aspects of the position that serve as disincentives to seemingly qualified candidates and the policy ramifications of possible pool inadequacy within …

Reflections Of Native American Teacher Education On Bear Ridge, Steven Locke Nov 2004

Reflections Of Native American Teacher Education On Bear Ridge, Steven Locke

The Rural Educator

This study examines an elementary teacher education certification program delivered by a state university to Native American teacher aides on the reservation. Data were collected over two semesters using a Freirean critical theory framework to analyze the data and to explicate the problematic nature of Native American education. Analysis of the data indicated that the program reproduced Euro-American cultural values, was insensitive to Native American history or values, and did little to support individual teachers. Suggestions include the need for the program to acknowledge and address the historical cultural genocide that occurred in the education of Native Americans and the …

The Appalachian Model Teaching Consortium: Preparing Teachers For Rural Appalachia, Alvin C. Proffit, R. Paul Sale, Ann E. Alexander, Ruth S. Andrews Nov 2004

The Appalachian Model Teaching Consortium: Preparing Teachers For Rural Appalachia, Alvin C. Proffit, R. Paul Sale, Ann E. Alexander, Ruth S. Andrews

The Rural Educator

The Appalachian Model Teacher Consortium is a partnership involving Radford University, Wytheville Community College, and the Grayson County (Virginia) School System. Its purpose is to prepare highly qualified teachers for rural southwest Virginia. The model was developed in response to the growing teacher shortage facing school districts in rural southwest Virginia. Poorer, more rural districts often have weaker tax bases that provide limited, and at times inadequate, financial support for their school districts. This lack of local resources often results in lower salaries and benefits when compared to many districts that compete for the shrinking pool of potential teachers. Additionally, …

Rural Elementary Administrators’ Views Of High-Stakes Testing, Robert J. Egley, Brett D. Jones Nov 2004

Rural Elementary Administrators’ Views Of High-Stakes Testing, Robert J. Egley, Brett D. Jones

The Rural Educator

This study examines how rural elementary school administrators perceive the effects of high-stakes testing in comparison to suburban and urban elementary administrators. High-stakes testing had a greater impact, both positively and negatively, on rural administrators than on their counterparts in suburban and urban schools. Specifically, the positive effects were that rural administrators were more motivated by the testing program to do a better job, found the test results more useful in assessing teachers, and found the test results more useful in meeting the academic needs of students. The negative effects were that rural administrators felt more pressure than urban administrators …

Rural Research Brief: Rural Schools Under Scrutiny, Teresa S. Jordan, K. Forbis Jordan Nov 2004

Rural Research Brief: Rural Schools Under Scrutiny, Teresa S. Jordan, K. Forbis Jordan

The Rural Educator

Historically, rural schools have been geographically and politically isolated to the extent that some might say that they have been the victims of, or beneficiaries from, an unstated government policy of benign neglect. Recently, conditions and relationships have changed with the enactment of state and federal accountability legislation and legal challenges to the constitutionality of state funding systems for schools. Federal concerns about the quality of teachers and the progress of students are accompanied by state standards, proficiency tests for high school graduation, and school report cards. Most of these requirements are unfunded or under-funded mandates. However, rural schools likely …

Building A Case For The Unfamiliar Cause In Cause-Related Marketing: The Importance Of Cause Vested Interest, Charles G. O'Brien Nov 2004

Building A Case For The Unfamiliar Cause In Cause-Related Marketing: The Importance Of Cause Vested Interest, Charles G. O'Brien

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Marketing and advertising practitioners are currently matching up a brand with a cause and broadcasting the association to consumers in a practice called cause related marketing (CRM). Scholars are building a stream of academic research which seeks to understand the relationship between a brand and a cause (a.k.a., alliance) in relation to the final outcome of a CRM campaign. Ostensibly, both partners benefit from this alliance, although many CRM studies seek to understand how to optimize this relationship for each partner.

In professional practice and academic research both practitioners and researchers have focused on established, popular, well-known causes in consideration …

An Extension Of The Quasicontinuum Treatment Of Multiscale Solid Systems To Nonzero Temperature, Dennis J. Diestler, Z.-B. Wu, Xiao Cheng Zeng Nov 2004

An Extension Of The Quasicontinuum Treatment Of Multiscale Solid Systems To Nonzero Temperature, Dennis J. Diestler, Z.-B. Wu, Xiao Cheng Zeng

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

Covering the solid lattice with a finite-element mesh produces a coarse-grained system of mesh nodes as pseudoatoms interacting through an effective potential energy that depends implicitly on the thermodynamic state. Use of the pseudoatomic Hamiltonian in a Monte Carlo simulation of the two-dimensional Lennard-Jones crystal yields equilibrium thermomechanical properties (e.g., isotropic stress) in excellent agreement with “exact” fully atomistic results.

Interfacial Stability Of Electrodeposition Of Cuprous Oxide Thin Films, Partho Neogi Nov 2004

Interfacial Stability Of Electrodeposition Of Cuprous Oxide Thin Films, Partho Neogi

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Experiments on deposition of Cu2O films from basic cupper sulfate solution show that copper also deposits. At low, but basic values of pH only copper deposits and at high pH only cuprous oxide deposits. In the intermediate range where both compete the system shows oscillations at "constant current." Linear stability analysis has been conducted for such an electrochemical cell to show that oscillations can take place in the parameter space identified in the experiments. The results are keeping with most of the experimental observations, which are many, but not with all. The physical mechanisms behind the oscillations are …

Efforts To Promote Tourism As A Catalyst For Urban Redevelopment In Florida: Insights From The Anthropology Of Tourism And An Annotated Bibliography., John F. Collins

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Tourism is a major contributor to the global economy and is an agent of cultural change. Tourism has been utilized throughout the United States as an engine of economic renewal in the promotion of redevelopment within many of our most celebrated urban centers. Urban tourism as it is found within Florida is explored. A chapter is dedicated to Tampa, Florida. Anthropology has spent little time or effort in attempting to understand the complexities of urban tourism and what it means for the cities of 21st century. The anthropology of tourism is utilized in exploring the political economy of tourism within …

Maurice Clarett And The Osu Scandals, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It has been an amazing fall season, not only for the Red Sox saga but also considering the eerie quiet on the college football scene. The usual run of assaults, petty thefts, sexual misconduct cases, drug charges, and weapons possession cases have been as rare as football victories for the University of Central Florida.

Annealing And Oxidation Of Silicon Oxide Films Prepared By Plasma-Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition, X. Y. Chen, Yongfeng Lu, L. J. Tang, Y. H. Wu, B. J. Cho, J. R. Dong, W. D. Song Nov 2004

Annealing And Oxidation Of Silicon Oxide Films Prepared By Plasma-Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition, X. Y. Chen, Yongfeng Lu, L. J. Tang, Y. H. Wu, B. J. Cho, J. R. Dong, W. D. Song

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

We have investigated phase separation, silicon nanocrystal (Si NC) formation and optical properties of Si oxide (SiOx, 0,x,2) films by high-vacuum annealing and dry oxidation. The SiOx films were deposited by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition at different nitrous–oxide/silane flow ratios. The physical and optical properties of the SiOx films were studied as a result of high-vacuum annealing and thermal oxidation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) reveals that the as-deposited films have a random-bonding or continuous-random-network structure with different oxidation states. After annealing at temperatures above 1000 °C, the intermediate Si continuum in XPS spectra (referring to the …

Coordination Variables And Consensus Building In Multiple Vehicle Systems, Tim Mclain Nov 2004

Coordination Variables And Consensus Building In Multiple Vehicle Systems, Tim Mclain

Faculty Publications

Much of the research focus in the cooperative control community has been on formation control problems. This focus may be due to the fact that the group control problem can be reduced to well-established single-agent control problems by employing a leader-follower type control strategy. For example, single-agent path planning and trajectory generation techniques can be employed for the leader, and conventional trajectory tracking strategies can be employed for the followers. Indeed, formation control problems are much like linear systems theory: we search where the light is the brightest. It can be argued that formation control problems are the simplest type …
