An Evaluation Of The Components Of An Effectively Functioning E-Logistics System, Douglas Russell

Theses (Pre-2016)

E-Iogistics has quickly developed into an integral component of everyday business processes. Although the foundation of logistical processes has been in existence since the bartering system was initially implemented, e-logistics began to evolve within the last few decades. In spite of the rapid implementation of e-logistics, a compilation of its complete components remains nonexistent. This thesis presents a comprehensive overview of the components of an e-logistics system as well as reviews specific corporations utilizing e-logistics, This includes a review of the two types of businesses conducted, business to business (B2B) and business to customer (B2C). The two main methods of …

Effect Of Coating Additives On The Rheological And Optical Properties Of Coated Papers, Burak Aksoy Dec 2004

Effect Of Coating Additives On The Rheological And Optical Properties Of Coated Papers, Burak Aksoy

Dissertations

Although additives are used in small amounts (below 2wt.% of the total solids) in a coating formulation, they play an important role in the runnability and end-use performance of the coating. Among coating additives, the use of insolubilizers and fluorescent whitening agents (FWA's) has increased due to theincrease in demand for higher quality graphic papers and packaging. Zirconium containing insolubilizers were studied for their rheological effects on silica ink jet coatings. Both zirconium species had an influence on the theological properties of the coating and its components. The interactions between thezirconium salts and the coating were found to be weak …

The War Of The Worlds, Wells, And The Fallacy Of Empire, John C. Hawley Dec 2004

The War Of The Worlds, Wells, And The Fallacy Of Empire, John C. Hawley

English

In his summary of the contemporary reviews of The War of the Worlds (1898), William J. Scheick notes that their extensive number suggests that readers now recognized that Wells was an emerging writer whom they could not ignore. "There were, again," Scheick notes, "reservations about slipshod style, hasty plotting, vulgar content and cheap effects; but these doubts were overrun by the general verdict that this romance was one of the most ingenious stories of the year and the best work to date of an author who was one of the most original of the younger English novelists" (Scheick 5). Earlier …

Determinants Of Aggregate R&D, Role Of Fiscal Policy, And The Effects Of Government R&D On Economic Growth, Ashraf Galal Mohamed Eid Dec 2004

Determinants Of Aggregate R&D, Role Of Fiscal Policy, And The Effects Of Government R&D On Economic Growth, Ashraf Galal Mohamed Eid

Dissertations

This dissertation contains three essays on research and development (R&D): determinants, the role of fiscal policy, and the effects of government R&D on economic growth. The first essay is an attempt to study the determinants of aggregate R&D expenditure in both emerging and developed countries with special attention to patent rights protection and technology transfer. The main findings are: (1) patent protection helps R&D but overly burdensome protection can limit access to new innovations and thus slow down the rate of research and development, and (2) technology transfer, through imports and FDI, has a positive and significant effect only if …

Cfd Analysis Of 3-D Thermalhydraulics Flow Effects On Wall Concentration Gradient Profiles For Lbe Loop Fittings, Narain Armbya Dec 2004

Cfd Analysis Of 3-D Thermalhydraulics Flow Effects On Wall Concentration Gradient Profiles For Lbe Loop Fittings, Narain Armbya

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The objective of the thesis is to study the effects of thermalhydraulics flows on the wall concentration gradient profiles in LBE loop fittings. To that end detailed models of the fittings have been constructed to study these effects. These fittings include sudden expansion, sudden contraction, t-joint and elbow. The typical flow rates chosen for these simulations are typical of design criteria chosen for the loop with Reynolds numbers expected around 200,000 and the usual axial temperature profiles which are being characterized in the DELTA loop at LANL. STAR-CD is the simulation package used to make these predictions, which include detailed …

Phase Coherent Effects In The Speckle Correlation Of Light Scattered From Volume Disordered Media And Randomly Rough Surfaces, Bogdan Danila Dec 2004

Phase Coherent Effects In The Speckle Correlation Of Light Scattered From Volume Disordered Media And Randomly Rough Surfaces, Bogdan Danila

Dissertations

We present a study of the statistics of the intensity patterns produced when coherent light is scattered by random media (volume disorder) or randomly rough surfaces. Such a random, granular interference pattern is called speckle. Particular emphasis is on the statistical correlations arising between thefluctuations of the intensities corresponding to distinct scattering paths; which are quantified by the speckle correlation function. In the first part, we present results for the correlation function computed for volume-disordered media by means of numerical simulation. Our focus is on the sensitivity of the correlationfunction to statistical parameters characterizing the volume distribution of the refraction …

Dissertations

Product development activity in the area of inkjet printing papers has accelerated greatly to meet the rapidly growing market for inkjet papers. Advancements in inkjet printing technology have also placed new demands on the paper substrate due to faster printing rates, greater resolution through increased drop volumes, and colorants added to the ink. To meet these requirements, papermakers are turning to pigmented size press formulations or pigmented coating systems. For inkjet coating applications, both the internal porosity of the pigment particles as well as the packing porosity of the coating affect print quality and dry time. Pores between the pigment …

Annotation Manager: An Automated Web-Based Content Management System For Digital Libraries With Annotated Bibliographies, Frenny Thomas

Theses and Dissertations

With the expansion of the World Wide Web in the 90s, individuals (especially students) are always on a quest for information resources especially in the form of Web sites. Yet many of them are overwhelmed when faced with deciding which site will best suit their research needs. As a result, these individuals may select a resource for less than optimal reasons. To ease some of the burden, libraries have made great advances to provide a place to organize information resources. Such places are called library portals, and they typically provide a gateway to web resources by categorizing and annotating them …

Safety Evaluation Of Left Turn Lane Line Width At Intersections With Opposing Left Turn Lanes, Aemal Khattak, Bhaven Naik, Vijay Kannan

Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports

The objective of this research project was to evaluate the effectiveness of offset opposing left-turn lanes at signalized intersections in reducing the frequency and severity of left-turn related accidents. The Cities of Lincoln and Omaha offset opposing left-turns by widening leftturn lane lines in June 1999 at six intersections. The research team investigated traffic accident patterns between January 1994 and December 2002 at those six intersections by making comparisons with two control intersections (i.e. intersections at which left-turns were not offset by lane line widening) using a four-step research methodology. First, existing literature was reviewed to determine the extent and …

Nigerian Immigrants Utilizing Ethnic Affiliation To Create And Transfer Social And Economic Capital To Develop Their Home Communities, James B. Ogundele Dec 2004

Nigerian Immigrants Utilizing Ethnic Affiliation To Create And Transfer Social And Economic Capital To Develop Their Home Communities, James B. Ogundele

Student Scholarship

Generation and transfer of capital by Nigerian immigrants to their homeland for development of their society and relatives seems to be the right things to do. From pure philanthropy concepts and theory, these goals should be easy to accomplish because of purposive benefits to the immigrants and their strong ethnic identity ties back home. Unfortunately there is a significant gap between existing theory and the actual practice. From personal experience and literature reviews, an individual immigrant's desire to transfer economic capital for assisting relatives and home communities have mixed results of success and failure with continuing frustrations and unintended consequences. …

Using Fine-Grained Cycle Stealing To Improve Throughput, Efficiency And Response Time On A Dedicated Cluster While Maintaining Quality Of Service, Gary Stiehr Dec 2004

Using Fine-Grained Cycle Stealing To Improve Throughput, Efficiency And Response Time On A Dedicated Cluster While Maintaining Quality Of Service, Gary Stiehr

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

For various reasons, a dedicated cluster is not always fully utilized even when all of its processors are allocated to jobs. This occurs any time that a running job does not use 100% of each of the processors allocated to it. Keeping in mind the needs of both the cluster’s system administrators and its users, we would like to increase the throughput and efficiency of the cluster while maintaining or improving the average turnaround time of the jobs and the quality of service of the “primary” jobs originally scheduled on the cluster. To increase the throughput and efficiency of the …

Mobile Agent Middleware For Sensor Networks: An Application Case Study, Chien-Liang Fok, Gruia-Catalin Roman, Chenyang Lu

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Agilla is a mobile agent middleware that facilitates the rapid deployment of adaptive applications in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Agilla allows users to create and inject special programs called mobile agents that coordinate through local tuple spaces, and migrate across the WSN performing application-specific tasks. This fluidity of code and state has the potential to transform a WSN into a shared, general-purpose computing platform capable of running several autonomous applications at a time, allowing us to harness its full potential. We have implemented and evaluated a fire tracking application to determine how well Agilla achieves its goals. Fire is modeled …

Supporting Live Development Of Soap And Corba Servers, Sajeeva Pallemulle, Kenneth J. Goldman, Brandon E. Morgan

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

We present middleware for a Server Development Environment that facilitates live development of SOAP and CORBA servers. As the underlying implementation platform, we use JPie, a tightly integrated programming environment for live software construction of Java applications. JPie provides dynamic classes whose signature and implementation can be modified at run time, with changes taking effect immediately upon existing instances of the class. We extend this model by automating the server deployment process, allowing developers to devote their full attention to the implementation of server logic. Moreover, the live development model enables the construction of server applications while they are running, …
