Compost As A Growth Substrate For Woody Ornamental Nursery Production, Jaime Crocker Dec 2004

Compost As A Growth Substrate For Woody Ornamental Nursery Production, Jaime Crocker

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Peat is an expensive, environmentally nonrenewable component of media used to grow woody ornamental trees. Leaf compost from the city of Bowling Green is an inexpensive renewable resource that was substituted for peat in soil-less container media. Seeds of three commercially important tree species, Koelreuteria paniculata (goldenraintree), Quercus alba (white oak), and Magnolia grandiflora (southern magnolia) were grown in 473 mL bottomless milk containers for 150 days, then repotted to 3785 mL pots for 90 days. Media ratios were 1:0, 3:1, 1:1, 1:3, and 0:1 parts commercial media to leaf compost from the Western Kentucky University Agricultural Research Center in …

Annualized And Cumulative Returns On Venture-Backed Public Companies Categorized By Industry, Amir Shachmurove, Yochanan Shachmurove

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

This paper investigates the actual performance of 2,895 Initial Public Offerings of companies that were backed by venture capital from 1968 through 1998. It seeks to refute the myth that investors demand very high annualized and cumulative rates of return to compensate for the risks they are taking by financing ventures. In fact, it argues that, based on historical statistics, the total returns of the venture capital market are reasonable given the level of risk. This is done by concentrating on sections of various types of industries that have been supported by venture capital.

Currencies, Identities, Free Banking, And Growth In Early Twentieth Century Manchuria, Thomas Gottschang Dec 2004

Currencies, Identities, Free Banking, And Growth In Early Twentieth Century Manchuria, Thomas Gottschang

Economics Department Working Papers

From 1906 until 1931, Manchuria – Northeast China - was a complex patchwork of Chinese, Japanese, and Russian spheres of control. Since political authority was fragmented, none of the governments was capable of establishing a central bank with a monopoly over the money supply. Multiple currencies were in use, ranging from strings – tiao- of traditional Chinese copper cash, to silver dollars (yuan) from Mexico, China, and Japan, to Russian rubles (which crashed in value after the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution), and miscellaneous paper currencies of varying stability. The modern banks established under national and private auspices to serve the commercial …

Spaceborne Microwave Remote Sensing Of Seasonal Freeze-Thaw Processes In The Terrestrial High Latitudes: Relationships With Land-Atmosphere Co2 Exchange, Kyle C. Mcdonald, John S. Kimball, Maosheng Zhao, Eni G. Njoku, Reiner Zimmermann, Steven W. Running

Numerical Terradynamic Simulation Group Publications

Landscape transitions between seasonally frozen and thawed conditions occur each year over roughly 50 million square kilometers of Earth's Northern Hemisphere. These realtively abrupt transitions represent the closest analog to a biospheric and hydrologic on/off switch existing in nature, affecting surface meteorological conditions, ecological trace gas dynamics, energy exchange and hydrologic activity profoundly. We utilize time series satellite-borne microwave remote sensing measurements from the Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) to examine spatial and temporal variability in seasonal freeze/thaw cycles for the pan-Arctic basin and Alaska. Regional measurements of spring thaw timing are derived using daily brightness temperature measurements from the …

Water Loss Estimates For Five Recently Transplanted Landscape Tree Species In A Semi-Arid Climate, Thayne Montague, Roger Kjelgren, Rick Allen, David Wester

Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications

Over three growing seasons (1994-1996), water loss of five recently transplanted, balled and burlaped (B&B) tree species was investigated using below-ground, electronic weighing lysimeters. For each species, actual tree water loss was correlated with reference evapotranspiration (ETo) to create a water loss multiplier. At the beginning of each growing season a single tree was planted into each lysimeter. Selected species were London planetree (Platanus x acerifolia 'Bloodgood'), corkscrew willow (Salix matsudana 'Tortuosa'), littleleaf linden (Tilia cordataI 'Greenspire'), Norway maple (Acer platanoides 'Emerald Queen'), and green ash (Fraximus pennsylvanica 'Patmore'). Throughout each growing season, tress were well-watered and lysimeter mass and …

Seasonal Variations Of The Gravity Wave Momentum Flux In The Antarctic Mesosphere And Lower Thermosphere, P. J. Espy, G. O.L. Jones, G. R. Swenson, J. Tang, Michael J. Taylor

All Physics Faculty Publications

Airglow imager and dynasonde/imaging Doppler interferometer (IDI) radar wind measurements at Halley Station, Antarctica (75.6S, 26.6W) have been used to estimate the seasonal variation of the vertical fluxes of horizontal momentum carried by highfrequency atmospheric gravity waves. The cross-correlation coefficients between the vertical and horizontal wind perturbations were calculated from sodium (Na) airglow imager data collected during the austral winter seasons of 2000 and 2001. These were combined with wind velocity variances from coincident radar measurements to estimate the daily averaged upper limit of the vertical flux of horizontal momentum due to gravity waves. The resulting momentum flux at the …

Making A Cyber Literacy Connection From The Storage Room To The College Room, Paula Boxie Dec 2004

Making A Cyber Literacy Connection From The Storage Room To The College Room, Paula Boxie

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

What roles can colleges and universities play in serving the many young adults whom our public school systems fail? This article sheds light on how one university was able to make a literacy connection with students attending an Alternative High School (AHS). This connection enabled AHS students and teacher candidates to effectively carry out a writing project in cyberspace. Data indicated that as the AHS students worked closely with their mentors, they became more aware of literacy strategies they needed to construct meaning and were able to recognize and appreciate quality writing. Thus, creating more partner-ships between higher institutions and …

The "Liability Of Newness" And Small Firm Access To Debt Capital: Is There A Link?, Susan Coleman Dec 2004

The "Liability Of Newness" And Small Firm Access To Debt Capital: Is There A Link?, Susan Coleman

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Literature pertaining to the “liability of newness” contends that newer firms face particular difficulties and a greater risk of failure. This article seeks to determine if “newness” is also a disadvantage in the acquisition of debt capital. Results indicate that newer firms were significantly less likely to have lines of credit and were also significantly more likely to have been turned down for their most recent loan. Even when we control for length of relationship with the primary financial services provider, personal guarantees, and collateral, younger firms were still more likely to be turned down for loans. Small firms are …

A Comparative Study Of Venture Capital Performance In The Us And Europe, Xiaoqing Eleanor Xu Dec 2004

A Comparative Study Of Venture Capital Performance In The Us And Europe, Xiaoqing Eleanor Xu

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

For the past fifty years in the United States, venture capital (VC) has provided initial funding to innovative entrepreneurial enterprises, while the European venture capital industry has only really emerged over the past decade. Using quarterly data from 1993 to 2003, this paper examines and compares the return and risk performance of venture capital funds in US and Europe. Several results are noteworthy. First, pooled venture capital returns in US and Europe are 3.273% and 0.765% (on a quarterly basis) above the CAPM market risk-adjusted returns, respectively. Second, US venture capital fund performance dominates that of Europe in all measures: …

Extending Asterism Decoding To Qam And Its Complexity In Rician Fading Mimo Systems, Phillip Conder, Tadeusz A. Wysocki Dec 2004

Extending Asterism Decoding To Qam And Its Complexity In Rician Fading Mimo Systems, Phillip Conder, Tadeusz A. Wysocki

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)

The area of Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) communications systems has received enormous attention recently as they can provide a roughly linear increase in data rate by using Multiple Transmit and Receive antennas. The optimal detection strategy for a MIMO receiver is to perform a Maximum-Likelihood (ML) search over all possible transmitted symbol combinations has an exponential complexity when the constellation size of number of transmit antennas increase. A number of sub-optimal decoders, such as VBLAST, provide linear decoding only where the number of receive antennas is at least equal to the number of transmit antennas.

Certain Asterism decoding described …

Gilbert, Pierre Lubin, Stéphane Vincent, Dominique Astruc, Dominique Legendre, Marie Duval, Olivier Kimmoun, Hubert Branger, Déborah Devrard, Philippe Fraunié, Stéphane Abadie

Ocean Engineering Faculty Publications

This research deals with the validation of fluid dynamic models, used for simulating shoaling and breaking solitary waves on slopes, based on experiments performed at the Ecole Supérieure d'Ingénieurs de Marseille's (ESIM) laboratory. A separate paper, also presented at this conference, reports on experiments. In a first part of this work, a fully nonlinear potential flow model based on a Boundary Element Method (BEM) developed at the University of Rhode Island (URI), is used to generate and propagate solitary waves over a slope, up to overturning, in a set-up closely reproducing the laboratory tank geometry and wavemaker system. The BEM …

Advanced Relation Model For Genome Sequence Visualization (Arm 4 Gsv): Exploratory Visualization Examples, Brian J. D'Auriol, Kavitha Tupelly

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

The Advanced Relation Model for Genome Sequence Visualization (ARM 4 GSV) is proposed in this paper. This model is adapted from an earlier visualization model which has been applied to the visualization of computer programs. A review of the fundamental model components of the earlier visualization model is given. Enhancements so as to make it applicable in genome visualization are discussed. As part of these enhancements, a relational characterization of genome sequences in terms of bases, codons, and patterns such as close inversions is developed and described. An adapted form of the Conceptual Crown Visualization (CCV) model, a part of …
