Kinetics And Relative Importance Of Phosphorolytic And Hydrolytic Cleavage Of Cellodextrins And Cellobiose In Cell Extracts Of Clostridium Thermocellum, Yie.-Heng P. Zhang, Lee R. Lynd
Dartmouth Scholarship
Rates of phosphorolytic cleavage of -glucan substrates were determined for cell extracts from Clostridium thermocellum ATCC 27405 and were compared to rates of hydrolytic cleavage. Reactions with cellopentaose and cellobiose were evaluated for both cellulose (Avicel)- and cellobiose-grown cultures, with more limited data also obtained for cellotetraose. To measure the reaction rate in the chain-shortening direction at elevated temper- atures, an assay protocol was developed featuring discrete sampling at 60°C followed by subsequent analysis of reaction products (glucose and glucose-1-phosphate) at 35°C. Calculated rates of phosphorolytic cleavage for cell extract from Avicel-grown cells exceeded rates of hydrolytic cleavage by >20-fold …

Identification Of Proteins Involved In Chloroplast Dna Replication, Matthew G. Lassen
Identification Of Proteins Involved In Chloroplast Dna Replication, Matthew G. Lassen
Theses and Dissertations
Chapter 1
Chloroplast nucleoids (ct-nucleoids) are DNA/protein complexes involved in compacting the chloroplast genome, and may play a role in regulating DNA replication. Ct-nucleoids were isolated from young soybean plants and separated by 2-D gel electrophoresis. Gel spots were excised and analyzed by MALDI-ToF mass spectrometry, resulting in several protein identifications. The proteins identified all have functions unrelated to DNA replication. While some of these proteins may be due to contamination, it is possible that some of these proteins are dual-functional, playing direct roles in the regulation of DNA replication.
Chapter 2
A 28 kDa soybean protein was isolated by …

Manganese Oxide Thin Films Prepared By Nonaqueous Sol-Gel Processing: Preferential Formation Of Birnessite, Stanton Ching, Steven M. Hughes, Timothy P. Gray, Eric J. Welch
Chemistry Faculty Publications
High quality manganese oxide thin films with smooth surfaces and even thicknesses have been prepared with a nonaqueous sol–gel process involving reduction of tetraethylammonium permanganate in methanol. Spin-coated films have been cast onto soft glass, quartz, and Ni foil substrates, with two coats being applied for optimum crystallization. The addition of alkali metal cations as dopants results in exclusive formation of the layered birnessite phase. By contrast, analogous reactions in bulk sol–gel reactions yield birnessite, tunneled, and spinel phases depending on the dopant cation. XRD patterns confirm the formation of well-crystallized birnessite. SEM images of Li-, Na-, and K–birnessite reveal …

Spectral Degree Of Coherence Of A Random Three-Dimensional Electromagnetic Field, Olga Korotkova, Emil Wolf
Spectral Degree Of Coherence Of A Random Three-Dimensional Electromagnetic Field, Olga Korotkova, Emil Wolf
Physics Articles and Papers
The complex spectral degree of coherence of a general random, statistically stationary electromagnetic field is introduced in a manner similar to the way it is defined for a beamlike field, namely, by means of Young’s interference experiment. Both its modulus and its phase are measurable. We illustrate the definition by applying it to blackbody radiation emerging from a cavity. The results are of particular interest for near-field optics.

What Does Height Really Mean? Part I: Introduction, Thomas H. Meyer, Daniel R. Roman, David B. Zilkoski
Thomas H. Meyer's Peer-reviewed Articles
This is the first paper in a four-part series considering the fundamental question, “what does the word height really mean?” National Geodetic Survey (NGS) is embarking on a height modernization program in which, in the future, it will not be necessary for NGS to create new or maintain old orthometric height benchmarks. In their stead, NGS will publish measured ellipsoid heights and computed Helmert orthometric heights for survey markers. Consequently, practicing surveyors will soon be confronted with coping with these changes and the differences between these types of height. Indeed, although “height’” is a commonly used word, an exact definition …

Preferences For Processes: The Process/Product Distinction And The Regulation Of Consumer Choice, Douglas A. Kysar
Preferences For Processes: The Process/Product Distinction And The Regulation Of Consumer Choice, Douglas A. Kysar
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
This Article examines a conceptual distinction between product-related information (such as whether a consumer good threatens to harm its user) and process-related information (such as whether a good’s production harmed workers, animals, or the environment) that has appeared in various guises within international trade law; domestic environmental, health, and safety regulation; and constitutional commercial speech jurisprudence. This process/product distinction tends to dismiss information concerning processes as unworthy of attention from consumers or regulators, at least so long as the processes at issue do not manifest themselves in the physical or compositional characteristics of resulting end products. Proponents have offered the …

These Technical Reviews refer to the Mound Laboratories in Miamisburg, Ohio, an Atomic Energy Commission facility for nuclear weapon research that would go on to close in 2006. The purpose of this document is to document and allow public comment on the proposed Removal Action (Building Demolition) of Building 124 Consolidated Waste Processing Facility (CWPF).
This research was completed money allocated during Round 5 of the Citizens’ Monitoring and Technical Assessment Fund (MTA Fund). Clark University was named conservator of these works.
