Finite Element Analysis And Reliability Study Of Multi-Piece Rims, Sandeep Chodavarapu Jan 2004

Finite Element Analysis And Reliability Study Of Multi-Piece Rims, Sandeep Chodavarapu

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Multi-piece wheels or rims used on large vehicles such as trucks, tractors, trailers, buses and off-road machines have often been known for their dangerous properties because of the large number of catastrophic accidents involving them. The main causes for these accidents range from dislocation of the rim components in the assembly, mismatch of the components, manufacturing tolerances, corrosion of components to tires. A finite element analysis of a two-piece rim design similar to one manufactured by some of the prominent rim manufacturers in the USA is undertaken. A linear static deformation analysis is performed with the appropriate loading and boundary …

Secondary (recycled) aluminum constitutes around 48% of the total aluminum used in the United States. Secondary aluminum melting is accomplished in large reverberatory furnaces, and improving its energy efficiency has been one of the major interests to aluminum industries. To assist the industries in improving energy efficiency in aluminum melting, an experimental research furnace (ERF), with 907 kg (2000 lbs) capacity, has been built at the Albany Research Center of the U.S. Department of Energy as part of this multi-partner research program. To verify that the experimental results obtained in the ERF furnace are valid for the operation of industrial …

Detailed Modeling Of Mufflers With Perforated Tubes Using Substructure Boundary Element Method, Balasubramanian Datchanamourty Jan 2004

Detailed Modeling Of Mufflers With Perforated Tubes Using Substructure Boundary Element Method, Balasubramanian Datchanamourty

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Perforated tubes in mufflers are generally modeled by the transfer impedance approach since modeling the actual geometry of the perforated tubes with holes is very expensive due to the enormity of the boundary elements required. With the development of the substructuring technique which greatly reduces the number of elements required detailed modeling of the perforated tubes has become possible. In this thesis mufflers with perforated tubes are analyzed by modeling the actual geometry and locations of holes on the perforated tubes. The Direct-mixed-body boundary element method with substructuring is used to model the mufflers. Mufflers of various geometry containing perforated …

Fabrication And Characterization Of Deterministic Microasperities On Thrust Surfaces, Sarang Narayan Kortikar Jan 2004

Fabrication And Characterization Of Deterministic Microasperities On Thrust Surfaces, Sarang Narayan Kortikar

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The deterministic microasperities play a vital role in reducing the coefficient of friction and wear of thrust surfaces and improve the tribological properties of the surfaces. Deterministic microasperities have a specific pattern in terms of size, shape and spacing. These specified geometries are controllable and repeatable. The microasperities are micron scaled asperities and cavities on a surface that form the surface roughness. The present thesis shows the detailed process to fabricate the deterministic microasperities on thrust surfaces, i.e. stainless substrate, using micro-fabrication processes such as lapping and ultra-violet photolithography in combination with an electroplating (nickel) process. A Novel alignment technique …

Limitations Of Weftless Bead And Its Comparison With Cable Bead Design For Tires, Sandeep Singh Khatra Jan 2004

Limitations Of Weftless Bead And Its Comparison With Cable Bead Design For Tires, Sandeep Singh Khatra

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Weftless bead design used in tires has long been the cause of failure. This type of bead design is generally used in agriculture, buses, trucks and passenger car tires. The main problem with this kind of bead is the splice region. It has ten cut wires, five at each over and underlap region. It is known since 1950 that Weftless design of the tire bead had failures within about 5 cm from the end of the overlapping parallel wire ribbon. The cause for this failure is generally attributed to the mounting process in which the diameter of the tire bead …

Realizations Of The Osp(2,1) Superalgebra And Related Physical Systems, Hayri̇ye Tütüncüler, Ramazan Koç Jan 2004

Realizations Of The Osp(2,1) Superalgebra And Related Physical Systems, Hayri̇ye Tütüncüler, Ramazan Koç

Turkish Journal of Physics

Eigenvalues and eigenfunction of two-boson 2 \times 2 Hamiltonians in the framework of the superalgebra osp(2,1) are determined by presenting a similarity transformation. The Hamiltonians include two bosons and one fermion have been transformed in the form of the one variable differential equations and the conditions for its solvability have been discussed. It is observed that the Hamiltonians of the various physical systems can be written in terms of the generators of the osp(2,1) superalgebra and under some certain conditions their eigenstates can exactly be obtained. In particular, the procedure given here is useful in determining eigenstates of the Jaynes-Cummings …

Building Web-Based Interactive Keys To The Hymenopteran Families And Superfamilies, Katja Chantre Seltmann Jan 2004

Building Web-Based Interactive Keys To The Hymenopteran Families And Superfamilies, Katja Chantre Seltmann

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Traditionally manufacturing job shops either have a process layout or a product layout. The advantages of one type of layout tend to be a disadvantage for the other. Hybrid cellular constructs represents a novel fusion of process and product layouts. In this thesis, hybrid cellular constructs specifically Hybrid Flow Shops and Reoriented andamp; Reshaped Cells are clearly described in terms of their structure, key features, and modes of operation. An engineering procedure is illustrated by cases and particular manufacturing circumstances where each concept would be most useful are identified. This thesis then defines the lean practices that are compatible with …

Business Process Re-Engineering And Information Security Planning: Opportunities For Integration, Omar F. El-Gayar, Brian D. Fritz Jan 2004

Business Process Re-Engineering And Information Security Planning: Opportunities For Integration, Omar F. El-Gayar, Brian D. Fritz

Research & Publications

Business process re-engineering (BPR) has come to recognize a need for the adoption of socio-technical methodologies and capabilities for knowledge representation of qualitative concerns. Security planning and decision-making has a similar need, and furthermore socio-technical methods common to BPR can be usefully applied in this capacity. The introduction of security models like Defense-in- Depth and similar efforts to recognize the organizational impact of security planning in operational security management serve as an initial step in educating security personnel and provide a more comprehensive view, but unfortunately, security decision-making has traditionally relied almost solely upon quantitative risk assessment, cost/benefit mechanisms, and …

Application Of Fuzzy Logic To Multiple Criteria Decision Making In Aquacultural Planning, Omar F. El-Gayar Jan 2004

Application Of Fuzzy Logic To Multiple Criteria Decision Making In Aquacultural Planning, Omar F. El-Gayar

Research & Publications

The field of regional planning is characterized by the large number of issues and attributes involved, and regional planning for aquaculture development is no exception. Moreover, aquacultural plans do not have clearly defined objectives and require information that, if exist, is often imprecise and uncertain. This paper applies fuzzy set theory to multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) in aquaculture planning. In effect, the paper demonstrates how fuzzy set theory can be used to explicitly account for the inherent uncertainty encountered when planning for aquaculture development in a given region. A case study for regional aquaculture planning in Northern Egypt demonstrates the …

The Search For Character: Servant-Leadership In An Australian Organisation, Margaret R. Whitmore Jan 2004

The Search For Character: Servant-Leadership In An Australian Organisation, Margaret R. Whitmore

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This study is in response to globalisation, changing world values and the call in modern literature for leaders of good character. Servant-leadership is offered to fill this requirement because its effectiveness is said to be reliant on the good character of the leader. In the literature this type of leadership is said to represent a new paradigm. The work of servant-leadership’s proponent, Robert Greenleaf, is thoroughly examined to explain how his understanding of trust as faith is linked to spirituality and this is the key to understanding the character of servant-leaders. Greenleaf’s work is compared with the modern servant-leadership literature …

Opto-Vlsi Based Wdm Multifunction Device, Selam T. Ahderom Jan 2004

Opto-Vlsi Based Wdm Multifunction Device, Selam T. Ahderom

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The tremendous expansion of telecommunication services in the past decade, in part due to the growth of the Internet, has made the development of high-bandwidth optical net-works a focus of research interest. The implementation of Dense-Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) optical fiber transmission systems has the potential to meet this demand. However, crucial components of DWDM networks – add/drop multiplexers, filters, gain equalizers as well as interconnects between optical channels – are currently not implemented as dynamically reconfigurable devices. Electronic cross-connects, the traditional solution to the reconfigurable optical networks, are increasingly not feasible due to the rapidly increasing bandwidth of the …

Implementation Of Arithmetic Primitives Using Truly Deep Submicron Technology (Tdst), Sholeh Eshraghian Jan 2004

Implementation Of Arithmetic Primitives Using Truly Deep Submicron Technology (Tdst), Sholeh Eshraghian

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The invention of the transistor in 1947 at Bell Laboratories revolutionised the electronics industry and created a powerful platform for emergence of new industries. The quest to increase the number of devices per chip over the last four decades has resulted in rapid transition from Small-Scale-Integration (SSI) and Large-Scale-lntegration (LSI), through to the Very-Large-Scale-Integration (VLSI) technologies, incorporating approximately 10 to 100 million devices per chip. The next phase in this evolution is the Ultra-Large-Scale-Integration (ULSI) aiming to realise new application domains currently not accessible to CMOS technology. Although technology is continuously evolving to produce smaller systems with minimised power dissipation, …

Development Of Criteria For Hiring Fourth-Grade Science Instruction Specialists: A Model For Elementary School Administrators, Lenora Y. Johnson Jan 2004

Development Of Criteria For Hiring Fourth-Grade Science Instruction Specialists: A Model For Elementary School Administrators, Lenora Y. Johnson

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The purpose of this applied dissertation was the creation of a developmental model of hiring criteria for 4th-grade science specialists to be used by elementary education leaders in the future. The premise for the model sprang from the author's view that 4th-grade instructors trained in science content and pedagogy would be more likely than generalist classroom teachers to plan and to implement optimally effective 4th-grade science curriculums and delivery methods. The author further believed that specialized 4th-grade science instruction might raise national science achievement test scores at that grade level and might increase student interest in science as a subject …

Development Of An In-Situ Hydrothermal Dissolved Carbon Dioxide Sensor For Hydrothermal Environments, Brooke Love Jan 2004

Development Of An In-Situ Hydrothermal Dissolved Carbon Dioxide Sensor For Hydrothermal Environments, Brooke Love

Link Foundation Ocean Engineering and Instrumentation Fellowship Reports

Hydrothermal systems at mid ocean ridges are a unique environment which connect the mantle, lithosphere, ocean, and biosphere in one complex system. Fluid chemistry is one key tool in understanding this environment, and carbon dioxide is the most abundant gas in these fluids. Its relative abundance and the information it can give about the magmatic activity, which is one of the ultimate drivers of these systems, and other processes, make it an attractive target for development of an in-situ sensor. This work has shown that attenuated total reflection (ATR) is a promising technique for in situ carbon dioxide measurements under …
