Our Ancestral Shadow: Hate And Human Nature In Evolutionary Psychology, James E. Waller Jan 2004

Our Ancestral Shadow: Hate And Human Nature In Evolutionary Psychology, James E. Waller

Journal of Hate Studies

In some unique ways, each of us is like no other human being. In other ways, each of us is like some other human beings. And, in yet some other ways, each of us is like all other human beings. The question of the nature of human nature is captured in this final statement. In what ways are we like every other person that has gone before us and will come after us? This question is particularly relevant to the emerging field of hate studies. Is there an endowment with which each of us begins our life that is important …

Polybutadiene Modified Clay And Its Polystyrene Nanocomposites, Shengpei Su, David D. Jiang, Charles A. Wilkie Jan 2004

Polybutadiene Modified Clay And Its Polystyrene Nanocomposites, Shengpei Su, David D. Jiang, Charles A. Wilkie

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Vinylbenzyl chloride was allowed to react with a low-molecular-weight oligomer of butadiene in order to give a material that could then be used to alkylate an amine to form an ammonium salt. This ammonium salt was ion-exchanged onto a clay to give a new organically modified clay, which was used to prepare polystyrene-clay nanocomposites by solution and bulk polymerization and by melt blending. The nanocomposites were characterized by using X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, cone calorimetry, and the evaluation of mechanical properties. These systems show good nanodispersion and improvement in thermal and mechanical properties. J. Vinyl Addit. Technol. …

Russia's 'Dictatorship Of Law' And The European Court Of Human Rights, Jeffrey D. Kahn Jan 2004

Russia's 'Dictatorship Of Law' And The European Court Of Human Rights, Jeffrey D. Kahn

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

This article is an adaptation of a lecture given at St. Antony's College, Oxford on 5 July 2003 in honor of the fiftieth anniversary of the Centre for Russian and East European Studies at Oxford University. The author evaluates the effect of the European Convention on Human Rights on Russian law and politics. Russia has been a signatory to the Convention for five years. The author argues that the full power of the Convention as a force for reform in Russia was unanticipated at the time of Russia's accession. Nevertheless, the Convention has been the catalyst for substantial reforms, especially …

Wasting Resources: Reinventing The Scope Of Waiver Resulting From The Advice-Of-Counsel Defense To A Charge Of Willful Patent Infringement, David O. Taylor Jan 2004

Wasting Resources: Reinventing The Scope Of Waiver Resulting From The Advice-Of-Counsel Defense To A Charge Of Willful Patent Infringement, David O. Taylor

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

Patent infringement cases may be the very definition of “high-stakes litigation.” In addition to issuance of permanent injunctions and high-dollar damage awards, judges have discretion to award treble damages and attorney’s fees in patent cases. Judges may exercise this discretion when infringement is found to be willful. One way for an alleged willful infringer to rebut an allegation of willfulness is to introduce an opinion of counsel evidencing the alleged willful infringer’s good faith effort to investigate the patent at issue after receiving notice of potential infringement. Disclosure of such an opinion, however, waives attorney-client privilege and work-product immunity. District …

American Bioethics And Human Rights: The End Of All Our Exploring, George J. Annas Jan 2004

American Bioethics And Human Rights: The End Of All Our Exploring, George J. Annas

Faculty Scholarship

In his compelling novel Blindness, José Saramago tells us about victims stricken by a contagious form of blindness who were quarantined and came to see themselves as pigs, dogs, and “lame crabs.” Of course, they were all human beings - although unable to perceive themselves, or others, as members of the human community. The disciplines of bioethics, health law, and human rights are likewise all members of the broad human rights community, although at times none of them may be able to see the homologies, even when responding to a specific health challenge.

The boundaries between bioethics, health law, and …

A Menu Driven, User Friendly Interface To Unix, Mary Hayward

Theses

An interface was developed to provide an environment where an inexperienced UMX user can work effectively within the UNIX operating system. A by-product of the interface results in the user learning a subset of com monly used UNIX commands. The interface incorporates a menu structure which presents the available UNIX functions to the user. When the user selects a function, the inter face prompts him for the required arguments, echos the corresponding UNIX command and executes the command.

Boards Of Advisors In Small Businesses: An Empirical Profile Of Their Composition And Use, Michael D. Akers, Don E. Giacomino

Accounting Faculty Research and Publications

This article discusses the literature coverage on Boards of Advisors to date and provides the results of a study designed to determine the formation and composition of Boards of Advisors and the ways in which small businesses use such boards. Our study surveyed the Chief Executive Officers or Presidents of a large sample of small businesses. We found that there is very limited use of Boards of Advisors in small businesses and that many small business managers are not aware of the concept of a Board of Advisors. However, those small business managers (97%) that use a Board of Advisors …

Vertical Dynamical Transport Of Mesospheric Constituents By Dissipating Gravity Waves, Alan Z. Liu, Chester S. Gardner Jan 2004

Vertical Dynamical Transport Of Mesospheric Constituents By Dissipating Gravity Waves, Alan Z. Liu, Chester S. Gardner

Physical Sciences - Daytona Beach

Over 400 h of Na wind/temperature lidar observations, obtained at the Star5re Optical Range, NM, are used to study the vertical dynamical transport of Na in the mesopause region between 85 and 100 km. Dynamical transport occurs when dissipating, non-breaking gravity waves impart a net vertical displacement in atmospheric constituents as they propagate through a region. We show that the vertical constituent flux can be related in a simple way to the vertical heat flux. Breaking gravity waves also contribute to eddy transport by generating turbulence. Because eddy transport is a mixing process, it only occurs in the presence of …

Minutes From Pragma, Juan M. Martinez Jan 2004

Minutes From Pragma, Juan M. Martinez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Minutes from Pragma is a collection of twelve pieces--a memoir, five short stories, and six short-shorts--exploring ways in which estranged characters may find refuge from chaos and entropy. These stories attempt to deal with bleakness and despair through playfulness and humor. In Enterprise Carolina: A Capsule Review, time has stopped, but somehow everyday life goes on as usual. In Errands, children work in razorblade factories. In Roadblock, the narrator lives with a relative who repeatedly sets his possessions on fire. The collection concentrates on hardship and alienation, but suggests ways in which characters may confront and endure hard times. Characters' …

Measuring Online Students' Ability To Apply Programming Theory: Are Web Courses Really Working?, Kathryn A. Marold, Wayne Haga Jan 2004

Measuring Online Students' Ability To Apply Programming Theory: Are Web Courses Really Working?, Kathryn A. Marold, Wayne Haga

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

As a response to troubling doubts about the success of Web-delivered courses that include problem solving and critical thinking skills, the authors gathered data from two online sections of the CIS Application Programming with Visual Basic course at Metropolitan State College of Denver over two semesters and compared it with the data from classroom sections. T-tests showed a significant difference in the means of student projects and tests that required application of theory learned. All sections of the course used the same syllabus and assignments and were taught by the same instructor. Internet students scored significantly lower in theory portions …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Internet Diffusion And Culture, Ravi Nath, N.R. Vasudeva Murthy Jan 2004

A Study Of The Relationship Between Internet Diffusion And Culture, Ravi Nath, N.R. Vasudeva Murthy

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

The unevenness in the diffusion rates of the Internet across nations is commonly referred to as the “digital divide.” Technological, economic and political factors are often mentioned as the primary contributing factors to this digital gap. However, there is sufficient evidence in support of the proposition that a nation’s culture also plays a role in how citizens adopt and use technology innovations. This paper examines the relationship between the cultural dimensions proposed by Hofstede and the Internet adoption rate of nations. Data from sixty-two countries are used to establish a regression model and the empirical results show that cultural traits …

The Impacts Of Conflicts On Requirements Uncertainty And Project Performance, Houn-Gee Chen, James J. Jiang, Jun-Cheng Chen, J T. Shim Jan 2004

The Impacts Of Conflicts On Requirements Uncertainty And Project Performance, Houn-Gee Chen, James J. Jiang, Jun-Cheng Chen, J T. Shim

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Conflict is a pervasive phenomenon that permeates information systems development and implementation. The literature has indicated that conflicts, due to their association with negative emotion, will negatively influence IS project development, even after controlling for the effects of conflict management and resolution; however, the negative emotional characteristic of conflict alone has a limited explanatory power of IS project success. The purpose of this study is to provide additional insight, by including requirement uncertainty as the mediator variable, of the impacts of conflicts on project performance. Surveys were sent to Taiwan’s top 1600 companies and the results support the hypotheses. The …

Development Of An It Balanced Scorecard, Theophilus B.A. Addo, Chee W. Chow, Kamal M. Haddad

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

There is a generally acknowledged dearth of metrics for effectively measuring organizational performance. This is particularly true of the IT function, whose contribution to a firm’s “bottom line” has been frequently called to question. This paper describes the development of a performance measurement tool called the Balanced Scorecard, which can be used to assess IT performance within the context of overall corporate strategy and financial performance. Data for the scorecard was obtained via a survey of senior IT executives in various organizations. The paper concludes with a set of guidelines for successfully implementing an IT Balanced Scorecard, as well as …

The Demand For Information Technology Knowledge And Skills: An Exploratory Investigation, Stuart D. Galup, Ronald Dattero, Jim J. Quan

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Organizations are always in search of appropriate information technology knowledge and skills to carry out normal business operations. Such demand is directly impacted by the overall economic conditions. During stressful economic times, managers, facing tough budgetary pressure, are forced to examine more thoroughly what knowledge and skills are needed to survive. This paper investigates the desired information technology knowledge and skills that employers are searching for in these turbulent times. We examine the content of job advertisements for information technology professionals placed in an online job placement website over a 2 year period, 2001-2002.

Promoting Social And Economic Justice Through Interdisciplinary Work In Transactional Law, Susan R. Jones

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Drawing upon the author's experience with a law school Small Business Clinic, this article claims that business law transactional practice is inherently interdisciplinary, involving collaboration from various disciplines, including law, business, accounting, finance, engineering, computer science, and the social sciences. The author explores the need for legal assistance for entrepreneurs and other small businesses, especially for women and minority business owners, and discusses the recent rise in small business clinics and community economic development (CED) clinical programs, which the author attributes to a trend away from government entitlements and toward personal responsibility and economic self-sufficiency, the failure of the litigation …

Spatial Variability Of Soil Electrical Conductivity And Its Response To Soil Physical Properties, Matthew David Sleep Jan 2004

Spatial Variability Of Soil Electrical Conductivity And Its Response To Soil Physical Properties, Matthew David Sleep

Honors Theses

The Soil Moisture Observatory (SMO) at the University of Mississippi (UM) is a 5 acre tract of a former agricultural field at the UM Biological Field Station. Preliminary investigations of this site included 60 continuous soil cores using the Geoprobe sampling technique. These soil cores were taken to a depth of 1.5 meters to correspond to the approximate depth of penetration for a Geonics EM38. The Geonis EM38 uses electromagnetic induction to measure apparent electrical conductivity of the soil. After three weekly measurement episodes using the Em38, the soil samples were taken. These samples were analyzed for particle size distribution, …

European Lingua Franca? Germany's Relationship With English In The Late Twentieth Century, Anna Elise Fleming Jan 2004

European Lingua Franca? Germany's Relationship With English In The Late Twentieth Century, Anna Elise Fleming

Honors Theses

The following thesis analyses the maintenance of national education, business, and social infrastructures (such as popular media and advertisement) for the English language within German borders. This linguistic situation in Germany, combined with the pressure of English as a global language, signifies the possibility of English becoming the lingua franca (common language) for Europe (both European Union and non-European Union countries), especially in the areas of higher education, business, and media.
