Tandem Inverted Repeat System For Selection Of Effective Transgenic Rnai Strains In Chlamydomonas, Jennifer Rohr, Nandita Sarkar, Susan Belanger, Byeong-Ryool Jeong, Heriberto D. Cerutti

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

RNA interference (RNAi), the double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) triggered post-transcriptional gene silencing, is becoming a powerful tool for reverse genetics studies. Stable RNAi, induced by the expression of inverted repeat (IR) transgenes, has been achieved in protozoa, algae, fungi, plants, and metazoans. However, the level of gene silencing is often quite variable, depending on the type of construct, transgene copy number, site of integration, and target gene. This is a hindrance in functional genomics studies, where it is desirable to suppress target genes reliably to analyze unknown phenotypes. Consequently, we explored strategies for direct selection of effective transgenic RNAi lines in …

The Effects Of Postfire Salvage Logging On Aquatic Ecosystems In The American West, J. R. Karr, Jj Rhodes, Gw Minshall, F. Richard Hauer, R. L. Beschta, C. A. Frissell, D. A. Perry Nov 2004

The Effects Of Postfire Salvage Logging On Aquatic Ecosystems In The American West, J. R. Karr, Jj Rhodes, Gw Minshall, F. Richard Hauer, R. L. Beschta, C. A. Frissell, D. A. Perry

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Recent changes in the forest policies, regulations, and laws affecting public lands encourage postfire salvage logging, an activity that all too often delays or prevents recovery. In contrast, the 10 recommendations proposed here can improve the condition of watersheds and aquatic ecosystems.

35th Conference On Senior Engineering Design Projects, College Of Engineering And Applied Sciences

Senior Engineering Design Conference

The 35th Conference on Senior Engineering Design Projects was held on November 30, 2004 at the College of Engineering and applied Sciences on the Parkview Campus of Western Michigan University. The college sponsors the conference to showcase the work of its graduating seniors, who are required to complete a capstone project that puts into practice what they have learned. Many of the projects are sponsored by business and industry.

Generation Of Synthetic Design Storms For The Upper Thames River Basin, Predrag Prodanovic, Slobodan P. Simonovic

Water Resources Research Report

The purpose of this report is to summarize methods available in the literature that synthetically generate rainfall hyetographs (plots of rainfall intensity vs. time). The outputs of selected methods are to be used as inputs to a hydrological model of the Upper Thames River basin, to be used for determination of hydrologic risks and extremes.

Getting Reparations For Slavery Right - Response To Posner And Vermeule, Roy L. Brooks Nov 2004

Getting Reparations For Slavery Right - Response To Posner And Vermeule, Roy L. Brooks

Notre Dame Law Review

Ambiguity aversion is a person's rational attitude towards the indeterminacy of the probability that attaches to his future prospects, both favorable and unfavorable. An ambiguity-averse person increases the probability of the unfavorable prospect, which is what criminal defendants typically do when they face a jury trial. The prosecution is not ambiguity averse. Being a repeat player interested in the overall rate of convictions, it can depend upon any probability, however indeterminate it may be. The criminal process therefore is systematically affected by asymmetric ambiguity aversion, which the prosecution can exploit by forcing defendants into harsh plea bargains. Professors Segal and …

Screw Dislocation Interacting With Interfacial Edge-Cracks In Piezoelectric Bimaterial Strips, Xiangfa Wu, Yuris A. Dzenis, Bradley D. Rinschen Nov 2004

Screw Dislocation Interacting With Interfacial Edge-Cracks In Piezoelectric Bimaterial Strips, Xiangfa Wu, Yuris A. Dzenis, Bradley D. Rinschen

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

This paper is concerned with the interaction between an interfacial edge-crack and a screw dislocation under out-of-plane mechanical and in-plane electric loading in a piezoelectric bimaterial strip. In addition to a discontinuous electric potential across the slip plane, the dislocation is subjected to a line-force and a line-charge at the core. Under the framework of linear piezoelectricity, the out-of-plane displacement and in-plane electric potentials are constructed in closed-form by means of conformal mapping technique and the known solution for screw dislocation in cracked piezoelectric bimaterial. The intensity factors (IFs) and energy release rate (ERR) are derived explicitly.

Earth Sciences

Peatlands in Europe has formed a significant sink for atmospheric CO2 since the last glacial maximum. Currently they are estimated to hold ca. 42 Gt carbon in the form of peat and are therefore a considerable component in the European carbon budget. Due to the generally wet soil conditions in peatlands they are also significant emitters of the strong greenhouse gas (GHG) methane (CH4) and in some cases also of nitrous oxide (N2O). The EU funded CarboEurope-GHG Concerted Action attempts to develop a reliable and complete greenhouse gas budget for Europe and this report aims to provide a review and …

Development Of A Solid Electrolyte For Hydrogen Production, Kiran Sampat Gaikwad Nov 2004

Development Of A Solid Electrolyte For Hydrogen Production, Kiran Sampat Gaikwad

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Electrolytic cells convert chemical energy directly into electrical energy cleanly and efficiently. An integral component of a fuel cell and an electrolytic cell is the electrolyte, a material that conducts ions. Liquid electrolytes can be aqueous as in the phosphoric acid and alkaline fuel cells, or molten, as in the molten carbonate fuel cells. A solid electrolyte is preferable because it allows sturdier, more efficient and corrosion resistant systems to be built.

The main objective of this work is to develop a solid electrolyte for hydrogen production by electrolysis of hydrogen sulfide. Barium Hydrogen Phosphate, Barium Dihydrogen Phosphate, Cesium Hydrogen …
