Distribution And Abundance Of The Mariana Subspecies Of The Common Moorhen, Leilani L. Takano, Susan M. Haig Jan 2004

Distribution And Abundance Of The Mariana Subspecies Of The Common Moorhen, Leilani L. Takano, Susan M. Haig

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Island-wide surveys for the endangered Mariana subspecies of the Common Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus guami) were conducted on Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands from May through September 2001. Based on these counts, the total adult moorhen population is estimated to be 287, with 154, 41, 2, and 90 adult moorhens on Saipan, Tinian, Rota, and Guam, respectively. Results suggest an overall increase in birds on Saipan and Tinian, although moorhen numbers on Guam may be declining. High counts of moorhens on Lake Hagoi, Tinian, during the wet season suggested movement from Saipan to Tinian occurs …

A Holocene Pollen Record Of Persistent Droughts From Pyramid Lake, Nevada, Usa, Scott A. Mensing, Larry Benson, Michaele Kashgarian, Steve Lund

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Pollen and algae microfossils preserved in sediments from Pyramid Lake, Nevada, provide evidence for periods of persistent drought during the Holocene age. We analyzed one hundred nineteen 1-cm-thick samples for pollen and algae from a set of cores that span the past 7630 years. The early middle Holocene, 7600 to 6300 cal yr B.P., was found to be the driest period, although it included one short but intense wet phase. We suggest that Lake Tahoe was below its rim for most of this period, greatly reducing the volume and depth of Pyramid Lake. Middle Holocene aridity eased between 5000 and …

A Role For Tbx5 In Proepicardial Cell Migration During Cardiogenesis, Cathy J. Hatcher, Nata Diman, Minsu Kim, David Pennisi, Yan Song, Marsha M. Goldstien, Takashi Mikawa, Craig T. Basson

PCOM Scholarly Works

Transcriptional regulatory cascades during epicardial and coronary vascular development from proepicardial progenitor cells remain to be defined. We have used immunohistochemistry of human embryonic tissues to demonstrate that the TBX5 transcription factor is expressed not only in the myocardium, but also throughout the embryonic epicardium and coronary vasculature. TBX5 is not expressed in other human fetal vascular beds. Furthermore, immunohistochemical analyses of human embryonic tissues reveals that unlike their epicardial counterparts, delaminating epicardial-derived cells do not express TBX5 as they migrate through the subepicardium before undergoing epithelial-mesenchymal transformation required for coronary vasculogenesis. In the chick, Tbx5 is expressed in the …

Simulating Particle Deposition In A Human Replica Lung Model, Pravir Rai Jan 2004

Simulating Particle Deposition In A Human Replica Lung Model, Pravir Rai

Theses

Tobacco consumption causes a variety of respiratory diseases including lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. These diseases occur when pathogens present in cigarette smoke enter into the respiratory system and deposit in the airways or gas exchanging membranes. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) package FLUENT has been applied to study the deposition patterns of cigarette smoke particles from sidestream and mainstream smoke, as well as carcinogen size specific particles for NNK and BaP. A three dimensional cast of an ideal three generation Weibel lung model and a three dimensional morphologically accurate human replica lung model were used in the analysis. …

Effect Of Surface Waves On Charnock Coefficient Under Tropical Cyclones, Il-Jun Moon, Isaac Ginis, Tetsu Hara Jan 2004

Effect Of Surface Waves On Charnock Coefficient Under Tropical Cyclones, Il-Jun Moon, Isaac Ginis, Tetsu Hara

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

The dependence of the air‐sea momentum flux on surface wave fields is investigated at very high winds under tropical cyclones. A coupled wave‐wind model is applied to estimate the momentum flux under ten hurricanes in the western Atlantic Ocean during 1998–2003. The model explicitly calculates the wave‐induced stress vector and the total wind stress vector from a given wind speed vector and a calculated wave spectrum. It is found that the neutral drag coefficient levels off at high wind speeds under tropical cyclones, being consistent with recent observations and previous modeling studies. The most important finding of this study is …

Effect Of Surface Waves On Air–Sea Momentum Exchange. Part I: Effect Of Mature And Growing Seas, Il-Jun Moon, Tetsu Hara, Isaac Ginis Jan 2004

Effect Of Surface Waves On Air–Sea Momentum Exchange. Part I: Effect Of Mature And Growing Seas, Il-Jun Moon, Tetsu Hara, Isaac Ginis

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

The effect of surface waves on air–sea momentum exchange over mature and growing seas is investigated by combining ocean wave models and a wave boundary layer model. The combined model estimates the wind stress by explicitly calculating the wave-induced stress. In the frequency range near the spectral peak, the NOAA/ NCEP surface wave model WAVEWATCH-III is used to estimate the spectra, while the spectra in the equilibrium range are determined by an analytical model. This approach allows for the estimation of the drag coefficient and the equivalent surface roughness for any surface wave fields. Numerical experiments are performed for constant …

Method Analysis Of Laboratory Measures Of Stream Sediment And Water Phosphorus Equilibrium, Anna L. Erickson, Stephanie M. Williamson, Brian E. Haggard

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

Elevated phosphorus concentrations in aquatic ecosystems of northwest Arkansas prompted an investigation of the effects of sample preparation and extraction methods on laboratory measures of sediment-phosphorus interactions. Two streams of contrasting phosphorus (P) concentrations were selected to determine the effect of using a CaCl2 solution instead of filtered stream water, refrigerated or dried sediments instead of fresh wet sediments, and vortexing the suspensions instead of shaking them. Sediment equilibrium P concentration (EPC0) and P buffering capacity (K) were used to determine differences in extraction methods. EPC0 and K from extractions using fresh sediments and a CaCl2 solution matching the electrical …

Effects Of Thinking-Aloud Pair Problem Solving On The Troubleshooting Performance Of Undergraduate Students In A Power Technology Course, Michael L. Pate, George W. Wardlow, Donald M. Johnson

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

A randomized post-test-only experimental design with a counter-balanced internal replication was used to determine the effects of thinking-aloud pair problem solving (TAPPS) on the troubleshooting performance of college students in a power technology course. The experimental results were stable across two troubleshooting tasks. Students who participated in the pair problem solving groups were significantly more successful (p ≤ .05) at troubleshooting engine faults than were students in the control groups. Among students who successfully completed the troubleshooting tasks across both groups, there were no significant differences in time required for completion. These findings indicate that the use of pair problem …

Aerobic Stability Of Heat And Orchardgrass Round-Bale Silage, Robert T. Rhein, Wayne K. Coblentz, Charles F. Rosenkrans Jr., D. Wayne Kellog

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

In Arkansas, silage is typically stored as balage in long rows of round bales wrapped in plastic film. It is important to evaluate the aerobic stability of this fermented forage when it is exposed to air, especially during the winter months when most of it is fed to livestock or sold as a cash crop. Two types of forage, orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata) and wheat (Triticum aestivum), were harvested in May 2002 and stored as balage. Twenty-one bales of each balage type were unwrapped and exposed to air on 10 Dec. 2002 for 0, 2, 4, 8, 16, 24, or 32 …

A Novel Approach To Information Security Risk Analysis, Bilge Karabacak, Ibrahim Sogukpinar Jan 2004

A Novel Approach To Information Security Risk Analysis, Bilge Karabacak, Ibrahim Sogukpinar

All Faculty and Staff Scholarship

A number of risk analysis methods became obsolete because of the profound changes in information technologies. Revolutionary changes in information technologies have converted many risk analysis methods into inconsistent, long lasting and expensive instruments. Therefore, risk analysis methods should be adaptively modified or redesigned according to the changes in information technologies, so that they meet the information security requirements of the organizations. By taking these requirements into consideration, a survey based approach is proposed for analyzing the risks of information technologies. This new method is named as Risk Analysis Method for Information Security (RAMIS). A case study is conducted to …

Collaborative Navigation Of The Stormy E-Discovery Seas, Robert Douglas Brownstone Jan 2004

Collaborative Navigation Of The Stormy E-Discovery Seas, Robert Douglas Brownstone

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

Seventy years ago, when the world was still paper-based, a famous lyricist wrote: “Say, it’s only a paper moon [s]ailing over a cardboard sea. But it wouldn’t be make-believe [i]f you believed in me.” Jump to today’s digital world, and imagine those lines re-written in an e-mail from a litigator to a client: “Now, underneath each paper moon is a vast electronic sea. If you plot a realist’s course you’ll cruise e-Discovery.” In the twentieth century, while civil litigation often wallowed in discovery disputes, at least paper’s one-dimensional nature provided several boundaries. The expansive powers of …

Population Genetics Analysis Of The Grass Shrimp Palaemonetes Pugio Using Single Strand Conformation Polymorphism, Melody A. Flowers Jan 2004

Population Genetics Analysis Of The Grass Shrimp Palaemonetes Pugio Using Single Strand Conformation Polymorphism, Melody A. Flowers

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Little is known about the genetic structure of grass shrimp, Palaemonetes pugio, populations or the effects the parasite Microphallus turgidus has on it. The objective of this study was to determine the amount of genetic diversity of the shrimp populations based on locality and parasite load. In order to examine the genetics of P. pugio, shrimp DNA was extracted and scanned using single stand conformation polymorphism. Results revealed P. pugio populations are highly conserved among localities. This suggests a significant amount of gene flow is taking place. Results also indicate there is no correlation between the most common host haplotype …
