Modeling The Strategic Impact Of Management Accounting Methods On The Implementation Of Lean Manufacturing, David Joseph Meade Dec 2004

Modeling The Strategic Impact Of Management Accounting Methods On The Implementation Of Lean Manufacturing, David Joseph Meade

Dissertations

This study examines the impact from the adaptation of lean manufacturing strategies on key external financial performance measures as reported by a number of management accounting methods. The research is not concerned with creating a justification for lean manufacturing strategies but rather it evaluates the inadequacies of standard financial reporting methods to accurately reflect operational improvements possible in the key performance measures through the early stages of a lean program.

ProModel simulation software is used in conjunction with Microsoft Excel and Visual Basic to create a simulated repetitive manufacturing environment and production planning and control system. The study examines the …

Safety Evaluation Of Left Turn Lane Line Width At Intersections With Opposing Left Turn Lanes, Aemal Khattak, Bhaven Naik, Vijay Kannan

Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports

The objective of this research project was to evaluate the effectiveness of offset opposing left-turn lanes at signalized intersections in reducing the frequency and severity of left-turn related accidents. The Cities of Lincoln and Omaha offset opposing left-turns by widening leftturn lane lines in June 1999 at six intersections. The research team investigated traffic accident patterns between January 1994 and December 2002 at those six intersections by making comparisons with two control intersections (i.e. intersections at which left-turns were not offset by lane line widening) using a four-step research methodology. First, existing literature was reviewed to determine the extent and …

Influence Of Fluoxetine On Positive And Negative Affect In A Clinic-Based Smoking Cessation Trial, Jessica Werth Cook, Bonnie Spring, Dennis E. Mcchargue, Belinda Borrelli, Brian Hitsman, Raymond Niaura, Nancy J. Keuthen, Jean Kristeller

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Rationale – Fluoxetine improves affect in clinical syndromes such as depression and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Little is known about fluoxetine’s influence on mood changes after quitting smoking, which often resemble sub-clinical depression. Objectives – The present study, a re-analysis of previously published data (Niaura et al. 2002), examined fluoxetine’s effect on changes in negative and positive affect following quitting smoking. Methods – Adult smokers (n = 175) without clinically significant depression were randomized on a double-blind basis to receive fluoxetine hydrochloride (30 or 60 mg daily) or placebo for 10 weeks in combination with cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for smoking cessation. …

Divine Minds: The Cognitive Foundations Of God And Religion, Todd Tremlin Dec 2004

Divine Minds: The Cognitive Foundations Of God And Religion, Todd Tremlin

Dissertations

Understanding how human brains work bears directly on the study of religion. Introducing the new "cognitive science of religion," this dissertation explains how natural mental processes that shape everyday human thought are also responsible for the arising and persistence of religious ideas and for the content and development of religions. The central claim of this work is that understanding the origin and features of god concepts and the religious systems that form around them requires an understanding of the adapted mind. This argument unfolds in two parts. The first explores the cognitive foundations ofsupernatural beings. It discusses in both evolutionary …

Protection Of Children From Exploitation In West Africa: Illusion Or Reality?, Afua Brown-Eyeson

LLM Theses and Essays

This thesis analyses the implementation of the main international and regional conventions, which guarantees the protection of children s rights and their effectiveness in combating the issue of child trafficking in West Africa. This paper examines both internal and external child trafficking and some of the causes of this menace. The thesis argues that the international and regional conventions, regardless of their efforts to protect the rights of the children, have failed to achieve their purpose especially in the subregion. In summary, this paper concludes that unless the issue of poverty, which is the underlying factor in the exploitation of …

Biology Faculty Articles

There is considerable debate about the fundamental mechanisms that underlie and restrict acquisition of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection. In light of recent studies demonstrating the ability of C type lectins to facilitate infection with HIV-1, we explored the potential relationship between polymorphisms in the DC-SIGN promoter and risk for acquisition of HIV-1 according to route of infection. Using samples obtained from 1,611 European-American participants at risk for parenteral (n = 713) or mucosal (n = 898) infection, we identified single-nucleotide polymorphisms in the DC-SIGN promoter using single-strand conformation polymorphism. Individuals at risk for parenterally acquired …

Some Day A Great Harvest: A History Of The Foundation Of St. Augustine's Indian Mission, Winnebago, Nebraska, 1888 To 1945, Patrick M. Kennedy

Student Work

Controversy has shadowed Christian missionary activity among Native American peoples from its beginnings in the 1500’s to the present day. During the last two centuries, the churches have competed for the souls of Indians on reservations, in the press, in Congress and in the federal courts. At stake were access to the reservations and the use of federal funds in religious institutions. These jurisdictional conflicts reflected and reinforced the contentious relationships between Protestants and Catholics in the United States. The history of St. Augustine’s Indian Mission was shaped by a combination of national and local events. The foundation of the …

Examining The Merits Of Dual Regulation For Single-Stock Futures: How The Divergent Insider Trading Regimes For Federal Futures And Securities Markets Demonstrate The Necessity For (And Virtual Inevitability Of) Dual Cftcsec Regulation For Single-Stock Futures, Zachary T. Knepper Dec 2004

Knepper

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] "Single-stock futures are a recent addition to the financial landscape in the United States and provide retail and institutional investors with a new tool for investment or speculation. So far, the market response to these instruments has been cool. Some observers have argued that the regulatory framework for single-stock futures is a cause of the lack of investor interest. Single-stock futures are regulated by both the Commodities Futures Trading Commission (“CFTC”) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (“SEC”), and this system of dual regulation has been criticized as overly burdensome and unnecessary."
