Causes Of Proteolytic Degradation Of Secreted Recombinant Proteins Produced In Methylotrophic Yeast Pichia Pastoris: Case Study With Recombinant Ovine Interferon-T, Jayanta Sinha, Bradley A. Plantz, Mehmet Inan, Michael Meagher
Papers in Biotechnology
It was observed that during fermentative production of recombinant ovine interferon-H (r-oIFN-H ) in Pichia pastoris, a secreted recombinant protein, the protein was degraded increasingly after 48 h of induction and the rate of degradation increased towards the end of fermentation at 72 h, when the fermentation was stopped. Proteases, whose primary source was the vacuoles, was found in in-creasing levels in the cytoplasm and in the fermentation broth after 48 h of induction and reached maximal values when the batch was completed at 72 h. Protease levels at various cell fractions as well as in the culture supernatant …
Between A Rock And A Hard Place: Sovereignty And International Protection, Fred L. Morrison
Between A Rock And A Hard Place: Sovereignty And International Protection, Fred L. Morrison
Chicago-Kent Law Review
Resolution for final status for Kosovo will require the participants to steer a course between claims of national sovereignty and those of international guarantees and controls. Negotiation of that status will require the parties to resolve a broad range of issues, ranging from economic and transit matters to the protection of minority rights. Establishment of an international commission to protect minority rights, perhaps modeled on the European Commission on Human Rights under the original form of the European Convention on the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, may be a useful first step in providing non-adversarial resolution of controversies …

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act And Non-Infringing Use: Can Mandatory Labeling Of Digital Media Products Keep The Sky From Falling?, Michael P. Matesky Ii
Chicago-Kent Law Review
Throughout the history of the United States, copyright law, the fair use doctrine, and other non-infringement doctrines have limited copyright holders' right to prevent certain uses of their works. Nowadays, however, copyright holders can prevent users from engaging in non-infringing use of works on digital media by incorporating technological protection measures, such as an encryption code that prevents a CD from being played on a personal computer. Furthermore, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act prohibits circumvention of a technological protection measure that "effectively controls access" to a copyrighted work. This combination of new technological and legal tools gives copyright holders the …

Leadership Role Expectations And Relationships Of Principals And Pastors In Catholic Parochial Elementary Schools: Part I, Duane F. Schafer
Leadership Role Expectations And Relationships Of Principals And Pastors In Catholic Parochial Elementary Schools: Part I, Duane F. Schafer
Journal of Catholic Education
Parish Elementary schools in the United States have a governance structure that often precipitates conflict. The principal is the designated leader of the school, the educational administrator, and the supervisor of the faculty and students. By canon law, however, the pastor of the parish remains ultimately responsible for the spiritual and temporal welfare of the entire parish. This review addresses the relationship of pastors and principals in parish schools. After a brief review of general governance in the Catholic Church, the review analyzes the roles of pastor and principal respectively, and concludes with some preliminary advice about role expectations.
Hegel's Logic Of Freedom, William Maker
Hegel's Logic Of Freedom, William Maker
Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal
The article explores Hegel's conception of logic as a system where freedom is both the method and the content, enabling the achievement of absolute truth. It argues that Hegel's logic is not merely a formal exercise but is deeply rooted in content, leading to the realization of truth as freedom.
Why Hegel's Concept Is Not The Essence Of Things, Stephen Houlgate
Why Hegel's Concept Is Not The Essence Of Things, Stephen Houlgate
Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal
The article explores Hegel's philosophical framework, emphasizing the transition from being and essence to the concept, where the concept represents self-determining being. Hegel's Logic is both a structure of thought and an ontology, illustrating how being evolves through stages such as becoming, quantity, and substance, culminating in the concept. The concept is not a static category but a dynamic, self-sustaining process that encompasses being and essence without being reducible to either. It is immanent in nature, challenging notions of a separate, higher reality.
The Concept And Its Double: Power And Powerlessness In Hegel's Subjective Logic, Lain Macdonald
The Concept And Its Double: Power And Powerlessness In Hegel's Subjective Logic, Lain Macdonald
Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal
The article explores the duality of power and powerlessness in Hegel's Subjective Logic, highlighting the tension between the Concept's absolute power and its susceptibility to powerlessness. Hegel portrays the Concept as an infinitely powerful force that unifies diversity through self-related negativity, yet acknowledges that reason can be powerless when fixated on determinate concepts, leading to one-sidedness. This duality suggests that while reason has the capacity for self-correction, it perpetually confronts the challenge of abstraction and determinateness.

Comparison Of Nerve Graft And Artificial Conduits For Bridging Nerve Defects, A. Mahmood Merican, T.S. Ahmad
Comparison Of Nerve Graft And Artificial Conduits For Bridging Nerve Defects, A. Mahmood Merican, T.S. Ahmad
Research Publications (2000 to 2005)
A study of nerve regeneration through a 1cm defect in the peroneal component of the sciatic nerve was performed on sixteen rabbits. Either silicone or polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) tubes or nerve graft were used to bridge the defect and the opposite limb was not operated upon. The rabbits that underwent nerve grafting had favourable findings. In the PTFE group, a nerve-like structure was seen at the former gap site and histology confirmed viable axons within the tubes and distal to the repair site. In the silicone tube group, there were no myelinated axons demonstrated. The axonal count for the grafted nerves …

Legal Deposit Of Electronic Publications In Malaysia: 1988-2000, I. Shahrozat, N.N. Edzan
Research Publications (2000 to 2005)
This paper analyses statistical data of on-print/electronic publications received and registered by the National Depository Centre, Perpustakaan Negara Malaysia since the enforcement of the Deposit of Library Material Act, 1986. Out of the 7,926 titles of non-print publications received and registered from 1988 - 2000, only 165 titles (2.08%) are electronic publications. The findings indicate that the types of electronic publications received and registered are limited to off-line electronic publications namely, CD-ROMs, diskettes and computer software. The legal deposit of on-line electronic publications has yet to materialise. The study is supported by interviews with relevant authorities to obtain information regarding …

The European Union And The Final Status For Kosovo, Adrian Toschev, Gregory Cheikhameguyaz
Chicago-Kent Law Review
'This Article presents the current policy of the European Union toward the final status for Kosovo—"Standards before Status"-and analyzes potential future developments of the EU's final status position. The March unrests in Kosovo caused a split among the EU institutions, and the reactions of the EU institutions in response to the unrests have varied. Nonetheless, the March unrests may have been the catalyst for a new discussion within the EU about Kosovo. This Article asks which of the EU institutions is the most important decision maker and determines that, of all of the EU institutions that assume different powers within …

Efficiency Of Taiwanese Laptop Manufacturers, Yi-Horng Lai
Efficiency Of Taiwanese Laptop Manufacturers, Yi-Horng Lai
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
Taiwanese laptop manufacturers strive hard to maintain their high growth rates and positions as leaders in the industry. Michael E. Porter claimed that Taiwanese enterprises must increase industrial efficiency to secure competitive advantage. Hence, developing an effective means of measuring and comparing the efficiency of Taiwanese laptop manufacturers is essential. Increasing the production efficiency of inefficient companies will improve the average efficiency and global competitiveness of the Taiwanese laptop industry.
This investigation examines the efficiency of 12 Taiwanese laptop manufacturers in 2002. Although financial ratio analysis represents a conventional approach to measuring the performance of enterprises using financial reports, this …
Why Are There Four Hegelian Judgments?, David G. Carlson
Why Are There Four Hegelian Judgments?, David G. Carlson
Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal
The article explores why Hegel's philosophy, typically structured in triads, includes four judgments instead of three. It argues that the four judgments—existence, reflection, necessity, and notion—are necessary to account for the external reflection or "silent fourth," a hidden element influencing the system. This structure deviates from Hegel's usual triadic approach to incorporate an essential mediator, crucial for his logical framework.
