Book Review: A Companion To The Regional Literatures Of America, Kathleen A. Boardman Jan 2004

Book Review: A Companion To The Regional Literatures Of America, Kathleen A. Boardman

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

What difference would it make if literary regionalism were taken seriously? We would have an ambitious, readable collection of essays, written by well-known scholars, that would critique as well as defend regional literary movements, re-examine the social implications of local color and Depression-era regionalism, trace the shifting borders of regionalism's connections with nationalism, study regional issues not only in narratives of village and countryside but also in Gidget novels and L.A. detective stories, and use current theories to recontextualize past work and predict the future. Here is that collection.

The methodology for this study is based on a cross-sectional study to assess fixed assets management processes in this and other well-established organizations. It is a …

Measuring The Robustness Of A Resource Allocation, Shoukat Ali, A. A. Maciejewski, Howard Jay Siegel, Jong-Kook Kim Jan 2004

Measuring The Robustness Of A Resource Allocation, Shoukat Ali, A. A. Maciejewski, Howard Jay Siegel, Jong-Kook Kim

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Parallel and distributed systems may operate in an environment that undergoes unpredictable changes causing certain system performance features to degrade. Such systems need robustness to guarantee limited degradation despite fluctuations in the behavior of its component parts or environment. This research investigates the robustness of an allocation of resources to tasks in parallel and distributed systems. The main contributions are 1) a mathematical description of a metric for the robustness of a resource allocation with respect to desired system performance features against multiple perturbations in multiple system and environmental conditions, and 2) a procedure for deriving a robustness metric for …

Expression Of A Putative Flavonoid 3'-Hydroxylase In Sorghum Mesocotyls Synthesizing 3-Deoxyanthocyanidin Phytoalexins, Jayanand Boddu, Catherine Svabek, Rajandeep Sekhon, Amanda Gevens, Ralph L. Nicholson, A. Daniel Jones, Jeffrey F. Pedersen, David L. Gustine, Surinder Chopra

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

In sorghum, ingress of Cochliobolus heterostrophus stimulates the synthesis of 3-deoxyanthocyanidins that act as phytoalexins. Apigeninidin and luteolinidin are two major phytoalexins induced in the first 24 h after infection. In an attempt to understand genetic regulation of the biosynthesis of sorghum phytoalexins, we isolated a differentially expressed partial cDNA. Characterization and comparison showed that this cDNA sequence corresponds to a putative flavonoid 3’-hydroxylase. Full length sequence characterization allowed us to establish that the sorghum putative f3’h cDNA encodes a peptide of 517 amino acids that has domains conserved among cytochrome P450 proteins functioning in …

Social Perception Of Working Women In Benin: Gender Analysis, Hermine G. Amoussou Jan 2004

Social Perception Of Working Women In Benin: Gender Analysis, Hermine G. Amoussou

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

In the workplace, women workers generally face problems such as inequality, discrimination and sexual harassment. This research allows me to identify, explore, and analyze the socio-professional factors that prevent women’s full involvement and their promotion in the workplace in Benin. The research presents an analysis of perceptions of working women and the effects of these attitudes on the professional life of women. It also considers the effectiveness and pertinence of gender awareness in the workforce in Benin. What people of Benin think and say about working women, their comprehension of women’s professions and the behaviors that these perceptions induce, on …

A Physics-Based Model Of Sic-Based Mesfets, Sankha Mukherjee Jan 2004

A Physics-Based Model Of Sic-Based Mesfets, Sankha Mukherjee

Theses

Silicon Carbide (SiC) has been investigated as an alternative material to Silicon (Si) for enhancing the power-handling capability of semiconductor devices for simultaneous high-temperature and high frequency applications. Its high thermal conductivity, high bandgap, low permittivity, high saturation velocity, moderate mobility, material hardness and chemical inertness make it a prime candidate for power electronics, heat and light sensors, and MEMS applications. The MESFET is the most viable power transistor based on SiC. The performance of SiC MESFETs is limited by trapping and thermal effects. A physics-based analytical model of the SiC MESFET incorporating trapping and thermal effects is reported. The …

Evaluation Of The Et2000 Guardrail End Treatment, Kenneth R. Agent Jan 2004

Evaluation Of The Et2000 Guardrail End Treatment, Kenneth R. Agent

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The objective of this study was to report the results of the monitoring of the performance of the ET2000 guardrail end treatment in traffic crashes. This end treatment has an energy absorbing design in which a vehicle will push a guardrail extruder back as posts designed to breakaway are broken. The W-beam guardrail is flattened as it goes through the extruder and exits a slot away from traffic.

Data for a total of 135 collisions involving the ET 2000 were identified. A crash report was obtained in the majority of crashes and the damaged guardrail was inspected in almost all …

Neural Network Based Classification Of Road Pavement Structures, V. Venayagamoorthy, D. Allopi, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy Jan 2004

Neural Network Based Classification Of Road Pavement Structures, V. Venayagamoorthy, D. Allopi, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Roads have formed the basic infrastructure of commerce since flints and other tools and artifacts were first exchanged along the trade routes of prehistory. Roadways are very large, in volume, in extent, and in value. They also wear out, and their useful life is directly proportional to their initial strength and inversely proportional to the number of heavy goods vehicles using them. Therefore, the increasing complexity of road transportation needs advanced techniques for effective design of pavements. This paper proposes an intelligent technique using neural networks to classify different types of road pavement structures, which is essential in estimating bearing …
