Objective: To investigate changes in total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol and triglycerides in serum of Pakistani patients with AMI due to age, gender, body mass index (BMI), diabetes, hypertension, and smoking, and also find out the prevalence of hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, "low HDL-cholesterol" and "isolated low-HDL cholesterol" in them.
Patients and Methods: Serum samples from 451 consecutive AMI patients (250 from National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, Karachi and 201 from Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology, Rawalpindi) were analyzed for total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and triglycerides using kit methods. LDL-cholesterol was determined using the Friedewald formula.

Objectives. Obesity rates are increasing among children of all ages, and reduced physical activity is a likely contributor to this trend. Little is known about the physical activity behavior of preschool-aged children or about the influence of preschool attendance on physical activity. The purpose of this study was to describe the physical activity levels of children while they attend preschools, to identify the demographic factors that might be associated with physical activity among those children, and to determine the extent to which children’s physical activity varies among preschools.

This study examines the effects of competition on copulatory behaviors of the tiger beetle Pseudoxychila tarsalis. I tested the hypothesis that copulatory behavior of a P. tarsalis mating pair in the presence of an additional male would induce significant behavioral changes, including longer amplexus time and increased frequency of a variety of copulatory behaviors. Trials were conducted with either one male and one female, or two males and one female, and the behaviors of one copulatory amplexus recorded per trial. Several studies in temperate regions have observed an active behavioral response of stream invertebrates to environmental factors. However, few of these studies have been conducted in the tropics and the behavior of tropical stream invertebrates is unknown. In an attempt to improve the knowledge on tropical stream ecology, this study observed indirect behavioral responses to discharge within the drift as well as the benthic macroinvertebrate community. Drift, benthic, and discharge samples were taken at 11 sites along the Quebrada Máquina from October 28-November 13 of 2004. The drift community richness and diversity and discharge resulted in a non-significant, negative trend. …

Lichens are commonly known to be biological indicators of pollution and edge effects. Their use as indicators in temperate regions is well documented, however, less is known about their function as a bioindicator in the tropics. There is also debate over the consequences of edge effects, such as increased temperature, and less moisture and wind, on lichen richness and abundance. In this study lichen communities on tree trunks in three habitat sites (primary forest, pasture, and roadside) were examined. The pattern of epiphyte distribution along host trees is a function of many variables. This study examined how the dispersal syndrome of the host tree affected the composition of epiphyte dispersal syndromes in that tree. It was expected that a host tree species bearing bird-dispersed fruits would harbor more epiphytes exhibiting the bird-dispersal syndrome than a tree that has fruits eaten by terrestrial mammals. Two species of host trees were surveyed, Inga sierrae, a tree with terrestrial-mammal dispersed fruits, and Sapium glandulosum, a tree with fruits that are bird-dispersed. Mammals occupy important roles in tropical ecosystems and can often be keystone species, controlling the composition of their communities. This study compared mammal communities in Monteverde and San Luis, Costa Rica, two regions that differ in their current and historical patterns of fragmentation. Three habitats per region, representing a disturbance gradient, were surveyed using scent stations. Prints as well as visual observations were recorded. No significant differences were found in species richness across zones or across habitats. However, overall diversity was consistently higher in Monteverde and locally highest in edge habitats in both regions. Local richness patterns (across habitats) follow …

For members of feeding guilds to co-exist in the same community, species must partition niches to avoid competition. In Tropical Lower Montane Wet Forest, hummingbirds are an important and numerous pollinators, suggesting a large number of niche partitioning mechanisms. Hummingbirds are often tightly co-evolved with the plants they pollinate, having bill lengths corresponding to the length of the flower they pollinate. It is proposed in this study that there is a relationship between heights of hummingbird pollinated plant and length of flower corolla. Although the protozoan parasite Ophyrocystis elektroscirrha was first recovered from Danaus plexippus (Nymphalidae: Danainae) and Danaus gilippus populations in Florida in 1966 and has since been found in many other monarch and queen populations worldwide, no previous studies have shown that this parasite infects butterflies in Costa Rica. This study is the first to do so, documenting the occurrence of Ophryocystis elektroscirrha in a wild and butterfly garden population of D. plexippus near Monteverde, Costa Rica. Although only a few infected individuals were found in both populations, there was a stark contrast in the number of parasites per individual between …

Census work and habitat analysis for the glass frog species Hyalinobatrachium fleischmanni was performed on four streams in Cañitas and Monteverde, Costa Rica. At each of six sites, the habitat occupied by H. fleischmanni was contrasted with a nearby, paired site where individuals were absent. Seven habitat parameters were investigated: water quality based on dissolved oxygen and phosphate content; water speed; discharge; distance from human development; extent of canopy cover; and presence or absence of common monocots (Zingiberaceae: Hedychium coronarium, Costaceae: Costus spp., Musaceae: Musa acuminata). The U.S. Forest Service is about to celebrate its 100th anniversary. It will host a national congress in early January of 2005, exactly 100 years after the first Forest Congress and subsequent to holding a series of regional conferences throughout the country. On November 18-19, 2004, the Andrus Center for Public Policy, the Idaho Statesman, and the Forest Service presented one of those conferences in Boise, Idaho. The topics for this conference were wildland fire and forest health.

A relationship between brain responses at birth and later emerging language and reading skills have been shown, but questions remain whether changes in brain responses after birth continue to predict the mastery of language-related skills such as reading development. To determine whether developmental changes in the brain-based perceptual skills are systematically related to differences in word-level reading proficiency at age 8 years, brain event-related potentials (ERPs) to speech and nonspeech stimuli were recorded annually at the ages of 1 through 8 years in a sample of 109 typically developing children. In In re Parentage of L.B., Division I of the Washington State Court of Appeals created a new common law cause of action that allows a same-sex de facto parent to be declared a legal parent. In the alternative, the court held that a de facto parent has a cause of action under Washington's nonparental visitation statute. This Note argues that the court exceeded its authority in creating a common law cause of action because the Uniform Parentage Act and the statutory scheme preempt the common law. Pollination mutualisms between plants and pollinators facilitate increases in genetic variability for plants while providing rewards for pollinators. Specialization of pollinators on specific plants has occurred to maximize benefits of these pollination mutualisms. With this specialization, pollination syndromes have evolved that increase a flower’s chance of eliciting visitation of a specific pollinator. For example, “butterfly flowers” have evolved bright colors, short to medium corollas, and strong scents that tend to attract butterflies. Glycine N-methyltransferases (GNMTs) from three mammalian sources were compared with respect to their crystal structures and kinetic parameters. The crystal structure for the rat enzyme was published previously. Human and mouse GNMT were expressed in Escherichia coli in order to determine their crystal structures. Mouse GNMT was crystallized in two crystal forms, a monoclinic form and a tetragonal form. Comparison of the three structures reveals subtle differences, which may relate to the different kinetic properties of the enzymes. The flexible character of several loops surrounding the active site, along with an analysis of the active site boundaries, indicates that the …

It is well established that cyst-forming phytoplankton species are transported in ships' ballast tanks. However, there is increasing evidence that other phytoplankton species which do not encyst are also capable of surviving ballast transit. These species have alternative modes of nutrition (hetero- or mixotrophy) and/or are able to survive long-term darkness. In our studies of no-ballast-on-board vessels arriving in the Great Lakes, we tested for the presence of the harmful algal bloom species Aureococcus anophagefferens (brown tide) in residual (i.e., unpumpable) ballast water using methods based on the PCR. Estimated Age Effects In Athletic Events And Chess, Ray C. Fair

Rates of decline are estimated using record bests by age for chess and for various track and field, road running, and swimming events. Using a fairly flexible functional form, the estimates show linear percent decline between age 35 and about age 70 and then quadratic decline after that. Chess shows much less decline than the physical activities. Rates of decline are generally larger for the longer distances, and for swimming they are larger for women than for men. An advantage of using best-performance records to estimate rates of decline is that the records are generally based on very large samples. …

Diffuse optical tomography allows quantification of hemoglobin, oxygen saturation, and water in tissue, and the fidelity in this quantification is dependent on the accuracy of optical properties determined during image reconstruction. In this study, a three-step algorithm is proposed and validated that uses the standard Newton minimization with Levenberg-Marquardt regularization as the first step. The second step is a modification to the existing algorithm using a two-parameter regularization to allow lower damping in a region of interest as compared to background. This second stage allows the recovery of the actual size of an inclusion. A region-based reconstruction is the final …

This study is based on a survey of male and female workers in organizations in and around Nagoya, Japan. It provides insights into gender issues within Japanese business organizations. The study finds that the female managers in Japan assess the managerial skills of women more positively than do their male counterparts. Business organizations in Japan are male-dominated and little is done to help women fit into the business culture. This is especially true when one considers the number of females in management ranks. Female workers in Japanese businesses perceive that they make many positive contributions to the workplace, such as …
