A macroporous poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene) resin having redox N,N-dichlorosulfonamide group, was modified for use in small-scale chlorination of potable water. The resin was synthesized via sulfonyl chloride by modification of the strong acid cation exchange resin, Amberlyst-15. The products obtained after treatment contained -SO2NH2 and -SO 3H groups. The sulfonic acid groups were determined by a total ion exchange capacity measurement. The sulfonamide groups were chlorinated mainly to the dichlorosulfonamide groups by laundry bleach acidified with acetic acid. The concentration of sulfonamide groups was determined by its chlorine holding capacity. The resin was further characterized by photoacoustic infrared spectroscopy. Tap water, sparged …

Anodized alumina templates have emerged as an important material system for the low cost fabrication of semiconductor and metal nanostructure arrays. This material system utilizes natural self-organization for the creation of periodic arrays of nanoscale structures. The underlying principle is that when aluminum is anodized in a suitable acidic electrolyte under controlled conditions, it oxidizes to form a hydrated aluminum oxide (alumina) containing a two dimensional hexagonal array of cylindrical pores. Children and youth with disabilities are over represented in the juvenile justice system. Studies show that a lack of compliance, monitoring and enforcement of the mandates of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) exists. There is an urgent need for a coordinated and systematic approach to the in situ conservation of the genetic resources of commercially important forest tree species in the Central Hardwoods. Effective in situ management of genetic resources would benefit from clear guidelines for how many adult trees can be harvested with minimal impact on allelic diversity. We are constructing a computer model for this purpose, and present preliminary results based upon replicate harvests of a virtual forest stand consisting of 200 adult trees. Enhanced Mass Sensing Using Torsional And Lateral Resonances In Microcantilevers, L. B. Sharos, A. Raman, S. Crittenden, R. Reifenberger

We present a method to detect, with enhanced sensitivity, a target mass particle attached eccentrically to a microcantilever by measuring multiple three-dimensional modes in the microcantilever vibration spectrum. Peaks in the spectrum reveal a complex coupling between the bending, torsional, and lateral motions and detailed finite element models assist in their interpretation. The mass sensitivities of the torsional and lateral mode frequencies are an order of magnitude greater, and their Q factors significantly higher, than that of the conventionally used fundamental bending mode. These modes offer significantly enhanced mass sensing capabilities within the realm of existing microcantilever technology. (C) 2004 …

The fundamental intramolecular frequency of a globular protein can be obtained from the measurements of acoustic velocities of bulk protein matter. This lowest frequency for common size molecules is shown to be above several hundred GHz. All modes below this frequency would then be intermolecular modes or bulk modes of the molecule and surrounding matter or tissue. The lowest frequency modes of an extended DNA double helix are also shown to be bulk modes because of interaction with water. Only DNA modes, whose frequency is well above 4 GHz, can be intrahelical modes, that is, confined to the helix rather …

Nanosecond absorption dynamics at similar to685 nm after excitation of photosystem I ( PS I) from Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 is consistent with electrochromic shift of absorption bands of the Chl a pigments in the vicinity of the secondary electron acceptor A(1). Based on experimental optical data and structure-based simulations, the effective local dielectric constant has been estimated to be between 3 and 20, which suggests that electron transfer in PS I is accompanied by considerable protein relaxation. Similar effective dielectric constant values have been previously observed for the bacterial photosynthetic reaction center and indicate that protein reorganization leading to …

Broadened Far-Infrared Absorption Spectra For Hydrated And Dehydrated Myoglobin, C. F. Zhang, E. Tarhan, A. K. Ramdas, A. M. Weiner, S. M. Durbin

The far-infrared absorption spectra of myoglobin powder at hydration levels between 3.6 and 42 wt% were measured with terahertz time-domain spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Absorption is dominated by the water content, but even the driest specimens have a nearly continuous spectrum without identifiable sharp features. Inhomogeneous broadening plus the intrinsically high spectral density of vibrational modes in the region below 2.0 THz apparently combine to obscure the lowest frequency vibrational modes expected for protein molecules of this size. A continuous absorption spectrum for hydrated protein powders suggests that the absorption mechanisms are similar to those in liquid water, …

To expedite the timely creation of medical practice guidelines, a meta-analytic method was developed to combine of both dichotomous survival data and continuous physiologic data from multiple studies comparing the same innovative clinical intervention to standard care. The method is adapted for synthesis of small, early studies of novel treatments. An aggregate ratio, R*, of the observed treatment effect to a clinically optimal treatment effect for studies in a series is computed, and compared to the 95% confidence limit for R* under the null hypothesis. Weights assigned to each study may reflect its precision, quality, or clinical relevance. Input data …

Objective: To estimate the optimum ratio of chest compressions to ventilations for onerescuer CPR that maximizes systemic oxygen delivery in children. Method: Equations describing oxygen delivery and blood flow during CPR as functions of the number of compressions and the number of ventilations delivered over time were adapted from the former work of Babbs and Kern. These equations were solved explicitly as a function of body weight, using scaling algorithms based upon principles of developmental anatomy and physiology. Results: The optimal compression to ventilation (C/V) ratios for infants and younger children increase sharply as a function of body weight. Optimal …

Butternut canker is killing trees throughout the range of butternut in North America and is threatening the viability of many populations in several areas. Although butternut is the primary host, other Juglans species and some hardwood species also are potential hosts. Evidence is building that genetic resistance within butternut populations may be exploited for conservation and restoration of the species.

Quorum sensing triggers virulence factor expression in medically important bacterial pathogens in response to a density-dependent increase in one or more autoinducing pheromones. Here, we show that phagocyte-derived oxidants target these autoinducers for inactivation as an innate defense mechanism of the host. In a skin infection model, expression of phagocyte NADPH oxidase, myeloperoxidase, or inducible nitric oxide synthase was critical for defense against a quorum-sensing pathogen, Staphylococcus aureus, but not for defense against a quorum sensing-deficient mutant. A virulence-inducing peptide of S. aureus was inactivated in vitro and in vivo by reactive oxygen and nitrogen intermediates, including HOCl and ONOO(-). …

Many variables have been analyzed in order to understand parent-adolescent interactions and outcomes for adolescents. These variables must be integrated into a model that demonstrates the holistic interplay of parent-adolescent interaction variables so that a more comprehensive understanding of parent-adolescent interactions is achieved. Variables included in the model proposed here were parenting, family environment, expectations, conflict, and outcomes. Parenting, family environment, and conflict were associated with outcomes for adolescents. When the variables were analyzed simultaneously with structural equation modeling, however, the relationship of parenting and adolescent outcomes was mediated wholly for male-father, male-mother, and female-father relationships but remained significant for …

Crohn's disease (CD) is an idiopathic, chronic, relapsing inflammatory disorder, which is most commonly involved terminal ileum and colon. The incidence and prevalence of CD has dramatically increased during the last 50 years; however, the etiology and mechanism of this disorder remain unveiled. Besides genetic susceptibility, recent integrated researches investigated the role of environmental triggers such as microflora, measles viruses and mycobacteria in the pathogenesis of CD. Land use affects the water quality of lakes. Different land use types yield different effects due to varying amounts and constituents of runoff. In this study, the effects of surrounding land use on the water quality of 50 lakes in Seminole County, Florida was assessed. Using GIS, I placed buffers of 100 and 500 m around each lake. The percentages of land use type were calculated within these buffers for 1990 and 1995.
