Context Of Learning And Second Language Fluency In French: Comparing Regular Classroom, Study Abroad And Intensive Domestic Immersion Programs, Barbara F. Freed, Norman Segalowitz, Dan Dewey

We compared the acquisition of various dimensions of fluency by 28 students of French studying in three different learning contexts: formal language classrooms in an at home (AH) institution, an intensive summer immersion (IM) program, and a study abroad (SA) setting. For the purpose of oral data collection, students participated in oral interviews (similar to the Oral Proficiency Interview) at the beginning and the end of the semester and provided information regarding language use and interactions. A Civil Rights Task: Removing Barriers To Employment Of Ex-Convicts, Leroy D. Clark

OUR NATION FACES a growing problem that cries out for careful, rational reforms. As of June 2002, the prison and jail population exceeded two million inmates for the first time. State prisons operated between 1% and 16% above capacity and federal prisons operated 31% above capacity. The inmate population grew an average of 3.8% each year from 1995 to 2002.

This case comment questions the neutrality of government environmental assessment reviews in Canada, through an examination of the proposed Tulsequah Chief Mine in Northern BC. The author questions whether a government which openly promotes development can or will ever place sustainability of a region on an equal level with economic gains. In the case of the Tulsequah Chief mine, the Taku River Tlingit First Nation opposes the project on grounds of regional sustainability. The litigation between the Tlingits, the BC Government and the Redfern Mining Corporation has raised issues regarding the fiduciary duty of governments to considering the claims of …

Objective: To study the consequences of a medical emergency among Emergency Room patients, at a teaching hospital in Karachi, Pakistan.
Design: A questionnaire-based survey
Settings: Emergency Room of Aga Khan University Hospital in Karachi, Pakistan. Main outcome measures: Consequences of a medical emergency in terms of impact on employment, financial position, family life, social life, recreational life, self-confidence and psyche.
Results: A hundred patients were surveyed. Emergency Room patients feel that they will not have a major impact on their job or employment, as a result of the medical emergency but it will have adverse financial consequences. The …

Crystal Habit Modification Of Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid) Due To Solvent Effects, Ali̇ Arslantaş, Walter C. Ermler, Rahmi̇ Yazici, Di̇lhan M. Kalyon
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Crystal morphologies are predicted for vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) using attachment energy methods. The significant differences between predicted and observed morphologies when vitamin C is grown from water, isopropyl alcohol, acetone-water solution, and isopropyl alcohol-methanol solution are attributed to the effect of solvent on the growth rate of the various crystal habit faces. This effect, particularly the role of hydrogen bonding between solvent and crystal surface, is examined. Molecular modeling is combined with the results of simple experiments charting the habit shift of vitamin C as a function of the hydrogen bonding tendency of the solvent or solvent mixture. A set of 14 mono-organotin(IV) derivatives of general formulae n-BuSnClL_2 and n-BuSnL_3, where `L' are various non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), were synthesized and structurally characterized by vibrational, ^1H, ^{13}C and ^{119}Sn spectroscopies and mass spectrometry to propose their structure. Biological activity data (antibacterial, antifungal and cytotoxicity) of the synthesized complexes were compared with the precursors to establish the significance of the complexes.

For over two thousand years, since the times of Jesus Christ, society has valued collegiality as one of its pillars in advancing human relationship: "Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same and in the same judgment." The Panama Canal Watershed (PCW) represents a special opportunity for studies related to seed dormancy in the tropics with both applied and basic research objectives. There is a clear need for seed information for nursery planning in restoration projects that involves use of a large number of local species. Moreover, the strong rainfall gradient along the 60 km of continuous lowland forest in the PCW represents an excellent opportunity to understand dormancy and its role as an adaptive trait that evolved in response to environmental factors. This study presents useful seed information for 100 tree species native to the PCW. …
