The authors argue in this paper that the institution of the minimum wage is also an important factor in explaining changes in earnings inequality in Costa Rica, and that it can be an important factor in many developing countries. This study is a departure from the literature on institutions and development, which tends to analyze the impact of a more generally defined set of institutions using data on a number of countries. Victim Empathy As A Function Of Attachment Style, Sex, Self-Esteem And Type Of Victimization, Molly Ann Hedrick

The conceptualization of adult attachment styles corresponding internal working models is a useful frame when considering empathetic responses to victims. This study explored empathy for fictional victims of several types of traumas, including date and stranger rape, as a function of ideal and actual attachment style, self-esteem, and rape victim-perpetrator association. Forty male and 157 female undergraduates at a large state university completed a questionnaire packet consisting of demographic information, a self-esteem scale, an actual and an ideal relationship style measure, and a philosophies of human nature scale utilized to measure related attachment dimensions. Coastal sandplain heathlands and grasslands of the northeastern United States are globally rare habitat types that support a unique assemblage of plants and animals. This habitat is rapidly disappearing due to plant succession following cessation of land use, and coastal processes. I used interpretation of historical maps, aerial photography, GIS, and analysis of field data to examine vegetation dynamics and the impact of historic land use and coastal processes on the current extent and composition of coastal sandplain plant communities found within the Cape Cod National Seashore (CCNS). Historical Reflections On The Arkansas Cross Timbers, Don C. Bragg

Kiichler's original map of potential natural vegetation suggested that the eastern-most extension of the "Cross Timbers" oak-dominated woodland reached into extreme western Arkansas. Recent investigations have found possible old-growth Cross Timber communities in narrow strips along steep, rocky sandstone and shale ridges near Fort Chaffee and Hackett. However, many decades of Euroamerican intervention have altered vegetation composition and structure in west-central Arkansas, making field evaluation difficult. Fortunately, historical accounts of the area provide considerable supporting documentation. General Land Office surveyors, for instance, traversed this portion of western Arkansas before 1850. They reported many ridges and slopes dominated by grassy, stunted …

The dipteran fauna of Arkansas is generally poorly known. A previous study of the Aquatic macroinvertebrates of the White River National Wildlife Refuge, the largest refuge in Arkansas, reported only 12 diptera taxa out of 219 taxa collected (Chordas et al., 1996). Most of the dipterans from this study were identified only to the family level. The family Chironomidae is a large, diverse group and was predicted to be much more diverse in the refuge than indicated by previous studies. As thermal infrared imaging technology has improved, it has increasingly been used for estimating sizes of wildlife populations. The greatest bias of thermal infrared surveys is the lack of known detection rates to adjust for visibility bias. As with visual surveys, a measure of detection rate is needed to provide unbiased estimates. We assessed the detection rate of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) using a thermal infrared sensor (1.2 - 5.9 /an) from an aerial platform. Similar characteristics between thermal signatures of people and deer allowed us to use people in a reclined or horizontal position as surrogates for deer. We …

Weathering of black shales leads to elevated metal concentrations in both surface water and stream sediments. In spite of the recent focus on black shales, few data exist on the ecological impacts of this process particularly on aquatic organisms. The key objective of this study was to determine the impact of trace metal concentrations in sediments upon aquatic organisms. To achieve the above objective, stream sediment samples were collected from streams draining black shale and limestone (used as a reference stream) lithologies located in central Arkansas between June 2003 and January 2004. Recent fieldwork in west central Arkansas has revealed the Arkansas endemic crayfish, Fallicambarus harpi Hobbs and Robison, to be more abundant than formerly believed. New localities and county records are provided in addition to information on the habitat preferences, sex ratio, color variation, reproductive biology, and conservation status of this burrowing crayfish.

Not Separate But Still Unequal: Disparities, Invisibility And Bias In Access And Quality Of Health Care In Michigan, Kelly Kammeraad

Current research points to race and ethnicity as predictive of disparities in access and quality of health care. A 2002 Institute of Medicine Study found that African-American patients tend not to receive the same type of care as White patients, even when controlling for socioeconomic status. Self-reported perceptions of racial bias within the patient provider relationship, from the patient’s perspective, are analyzed to uncover the subtle ways perceptions of differential treatment based on racial bias work to create barriers or perpetuate disparities in health outcomes for African-American breast cancer survivors in Michigan.

Western-European stereotypes still permeate Plains Indian culture suggesting that women were passive and subjugated while men were dominant warriors. This research challenges those stereotypes through exploration of origin and spirituality accounts, kinship organization, historical impact, contemporary and traditional issues, and through first hand ethnographic research of the Sicangu Nation of Lakota people in regards to gender roles. Using feminist critique and reflexive theoretical approaches, information was collected through participant observation and interviews with Sicangu people in 2004. By focusing on how Lakota women have empowered themselves, this research illustrates how women were and continue to be respected, influential members of …

A series of substituted 2-phenacyl-3-phenyl-1H-pyrrole-4-carboxylates were prepared from substituted acetophenones in 6 steps. The final condensations between a chloroenal and an aminoketone were carried out under neutral conditions in parallel to yield the series listed below. Selected pyrrole derivatives proved to be potent hypolipidemic agents lowering serum triglyceride concentrations in CF-1 male mice after 14 days of I.P. administration. One agent orally lowered serum cholesterol in Sprague-Dawley male rats at 2mg/kg/day after 14 days. The agents demonstrated a lowering of mouse serum LDL- cholesterol levels and selected compounds showed an elevation of serum HDL-cholesterol levels. The cholesterol concentrations in the …
