Generalized mixed model methodology and MCMC simulations were used to estimate genetic parameters for calving rate and calf survival with the normal, probit, and logistic models. Calving rate and calf survival were defined as 0 each time a cow failed to calf or a calf failed to survive to weaning age, otherwise they were set to 1. Data were available on 1,458 cows and on 5,015 calves. Cows produced a total of 4,808 records over 4 discrete generations of rotational crosses between Angus, Brahman, Charolais, and Hereford from 1977 to 1995. Sports success is dependent primarily on genetic endowment in athletes with morphologic, psychologic, physiologic and metabolic traits specific to performance characteristics vital to their sport. Such genetically-endowed athletes must also receive optimal training to increase physical power, enhance mental strength, and provide a mechanical advantage. However, athletes often attempt to go beyond training and use substances and techniques, often referred to as ergogenics, in attempts to gain a competitive advantage. The purpose of this study is to write the life history of a black woman educator is order to enhance our understandings of educational activism and social change in the Deep South. African American educators have been marginalized and under represented in their communities despite the roles they have played in ameliorating educational inequalities. Economic considerations can play a critical role in decisions regarding habitat alteration and protection. Yet the Essential Fish Habitat provisions of the Magnuson-Stevens Act are silent on the role of economic analysis in efforts to identify and protect marine fish habitat. On the federal level, actions taken to amend Fishery Management Plans (FMPs) or implement other regulations governing these fisheries must meet the requirements of Federal Laws and regulations, many of which address economic concerns. Genes normally resident in euchromatic domains are silenced when packaged into heterochromatin, as exemplified in Drosophila melanogaster by position effect variegation (PEV). Loss-of-function mutations resulting in suppression of PEV have identified critical components of heterochromatin, including proteins HP1, HP2, and histone H3 lysine 9 methyltransferase. Here, we demonstrate that this silencing is dependent on the RNA interference machinery, using tandem mini-white arrays and white transgenes in heterochromatin to show loss of silencing as a result of mutations in piwi, aubergine, or spindle-E (homeless), which encode RNAi components. Ordered cortical microtubule arrays are essential for normal plant morphogenesis, but how these arrays form is unclear. The dynamics of individual cortical microtubules are stochastic and cannot fully account for the observed order; however, using tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) cells expressing either the MBD-DsRed (microtubule binding domain of the mammalian MAP4 fused to the Discosoma sp red fluorescent protein) or YFP-TUA6 (yellow fluorescent protein fused to the Arabidopsis alpha-tubulin 6 isoform) microtubule markers, we identified intermicrotubule interactions that modify their stochastic behaviors. The intermicrotubule interactions occur when the growing plus-ends of cortical microtubules encounter previously existing cortical microtubules. Importantly, the outcome …

Cortical microtubules (CMTs) are essential for normal plant morphogenesis because they affect the axes of cell elongation and predict the placement of cell division planes. The function of the CMTs is intimately linked to their organizational state, which is subject to spatial and temporal modifications by developmental and environmental cues. CMT assembly dynamics govern when, where, and how microtubules appear in a cell's cortex, and the regulation of these properties affects their organization. In Indonesia, the practice of female circumcision (FC) has long existed, but information concerning where and how it is carried out has been limited. The specific aims of the study conducted by the Population Council Jakarta were to provide research-based information on FC customary practices and their socio-cultural determinants, and if possible, to assess any long-term physical and psychological consequences. Study findings indicate that in general Muslim communities support the continuation of FC practice, because they perceive it as both a societal custom and a religious duty. The disease commences in most patients with a relapsing-remitting course, and it is likely that treatment is most effective during this phase before permanent axon damage has occurred. Despite the absence of a cure for MS, the 4 available drug therapies (Interferon (IFN) beta-1a, IFN beta-1b, glatiramer acetate, and mitoxantrone) play a role in the management of MS based on their demonstrated efficacy. Acrocallosal syndrome (ACS), is an extremely rare disorder characterized by the absence of corpus callosum (CC), macrocephaly, hypertelorism, pre- and postaxial polydactyly and severe motor and mental retardation. There are only 3 reports of ACS associated with ocular findings, including optic atrophy, esotropia and anophthalmus. We report on the first known Turkish case of ACS associated with unilateral nystagmus in addition to several neurologic abnormalities such as absence of the adhesio interthalamica and many others. The goal of this research is examining the frequencies of nicotine and opium dependence among psychiatric inpatients in Kerman, Iran. METHODS: Three groups of psychiatric inpatients, chronic medical patients and a sample from the local population, each including 400 subjects were selected. Such diseases gain importance because of its effect on both humans and animals and because of the unique biological features of the infectious agent. Since its discovery the agent responsible has remained mysterious in its mechanism of action, pathogenesis and the ability to produce disease. In this review, the considerable evidence regarding the molecular biology, pathogenesis, epidemiology, diagnosis and therapeutic approaches are being discussed. The advances in understandings of fundamental biology of prion diseases may open the possibilities for the prevention and treatment of these unusual diseases.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the value of trigeminal somatosensory evoked potentials (TSEP) in evaluating toxicity of trichloroethylene to the trigeminal nerve. METHODS: Trichloroethylene (TCE), an excellent fat solvent largely used in industry, has a neurotoxic effect particularly on the trigeminal nerve. In March 2002, several TCE-exposed workers presented to Habib Bourguiba University Hospital, Sfax, Tunisia, for burned or numbness of the face. Twenty-three workers manipulating TCE underwent clinical, biological and toxicological assessment. Neurophysiologic study consisted of the measurement of the latencies and the amplitudes of TSEP in 23 exposed workers and 23 controls. RESULTS: Abnormal TSEP were observed in 6 workers …

Why are people more willing to accept some governmental decisions than others? In this article, we present results from a series of original experiments showing that people’s reactions to a given outcome are heavily influenced by the procedure employed to produce the outcome.We find that subjects reactmuch less favorably when a decision maker intentionally keeps a large payoff, thereby leaving the subject with a small payoff, than when that same payoff results from a procedure based on chance or on desert.
