Transport And Deposition Of Fluid Mud Event Layers Along The Western Louisiana Inner Shelf, Kristina Anne Rotondo Jan 2004

Transport And Deposition Of Fluid Mud Event Layers Along The Western Louisiana Inner Shelf, Kristina Anne Rotondo

LSU Master's Theses

The western Louisiana inner shelf along the Chenier Plain coast has experienced fluid mud deposition in response to increased fine sediment supplied by the Atchafalaya River since ~1950’s. The goal of this project is to assess the characteristics comprising the sedimentary strata and stratigraphic architecture that result from mud deposition on the inner shelf. Recent time-series cores collected from the inner shelf along the Chenier plain coast show the region is subject to transient fluid mud deposition, leading to high long-term accumulation rates. Sediment cores were collected in May 2001, March and May 2002 from the inner shelf landward of …

Individual And Landscape-Level Effects Of Selective Herbicides, Mowing, And Prescribed Fire On Habitat Quality For Northern Bobwhite (Colinus Virginianus), Charles Lynn Kitts Jan 2004

Individual And Landscape-Level Effects Of Selective Herbicides, Mowing, And Prescribed Fire On Habitat Quality For Northern Bobwhite (Colinus Virginianus), Charles Lynn Kitts

LSU Master's Theses

Northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) populations have been declining throughout their range during the past 30 years primarily because of a result of loss of early successional habitat. Specifically, intensive silviculture practices and reduction in the use of prescribed fire has led to this loss. I studied effects of management practices (selective herbicides, mowing, and prescribed fire) on male and covey distribution, and brood-rearing habitats on Jackson-Bienville Wildlife Management Area (JBWMA). Specifically, I used calling surveys to assess landscape characteristics associated bobwhite distribution. I also measured vegetation and arthropod response, using imprinted bobwhite chicks, pitfalls, and sweep nets, to different habitat …

The Effects Of Non-Focused Extracorporeal Shock Waves On Neuronal Morphology, Function And Analgesia In Horses, David Manuel Bolt Jan 2004

The Effects Of Non-Focused Extracorporeal Shock Waves On Neuronal Morphology, Function And Analgesia In Horses, David Manuel Bolt

LSU Master's Theses

These studies were conducted to elucidate the regional analgesic effect that is observed clinically after treatment of orthopedic disorders with application of extracorporeal shock waves in horses. Regional analgesia after treatment with extracorporeal shock waves presents a concern because it may eliminate protective limiting mechanisms and may place equine athletes with predisposing lesions at risk of sustaining career- or life-ending injuries. Direct percutaneous application of non-focused extracorporeal shock waves to palmar digital nerves in the pastern area of horses resulted in decreased sensory nerve conduction velocities compared with untreated control nerves at 3, 7, and 35 days after treatment. Transmission …

Testing A Cmos Operational Amplifier Circuit Using A Combination Of Oscillation And Iddq Test Methods, Pavan K. Alli Jan 2004

Testing A Cmos Operational Amplifier Circuit Using A Combination Of Oscillation And Iddq Test Methods, Pavan K. Alli

LSU Master's Theses

This work presents a case study, which attempts to improve the fault diagnosis and testability of the oscillation testing methodology applied to a typical two-stage CMOS operational amplifier. The proposed test method takes the advantage of good fault coverage through the use of a simple oscillation based test technique, which needs no test signal generation and combines it with quiescent supply current (IDDQ) testing to provide a fault confirmation. A built in current sensor (BICS), which introduces insignificant performance degradation of the circuit-under-test (CUT), has been utilized to monitor the power supply quiescent current changes in the CUT. The testability …

Insect Pest Management Approaches Among Currently Recommended Sugarcane Varieties In Louisiana, Frederick R. Posey Jan 2004

Insect Pest Management Approaches Among Currently Recommended Sugarcane Varieties In Louisiana, Frederick R. Posey

LSU Master's Theses

The sugarcane borer, Diatraea saccharalis (F.), (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), is responsible for more than 90% of the total insect damage to sugarcane in Louisiana. The decision to apply insecticides is complex and influenced by numerous variables. Included among these variables are insect infestation levels, varieties, weather conditions, production input levels, and environmental concerns. Predicting damage that may result from infestations occurring at a particular time of the crop production season is also important. The objective of this research was to evaluate the impact of these variables on sugarcane borer populations and subsequent yield loss. Results from a two-year survey indicated a …

Modeling Of Cane Sugar Colorant Removal In Packed-Bed Ion Exchange Columns And An Investigation Into Pretreatment Methods, Bruce Malcolm Ellis Jan 2004

Modeling Of Cane Sugar Colorant Removal In Packed-Bed Ion Exchange Columns And An Investigation Into Pretreatment Methods, Bruce Malcolm Ellis

LSU Master's Theses

Cane sugar colorants have been extensively researched but still little is known about their exact compositions. Rather than distinct compounds, they are a mixture of many compounds. Some it is assumed can be classified into the pseudo components that have been defined using gel permeation chromatography, based on molecular weight. The defining of these components has allowed the colorants to be modeled independently, instead of as one lumped color parameter. The measured colored components were modeled using a linear driving force adsorption model, which could be applied in the design process for optimizing the decolorizing capacity of the resins. The …

Adaptations By The Locomotor Systems Of Terrestrial And Amphibious Crabs Walking Freely On Land And Underwater, Jennifer Nuss Schreiner Jan 2004

Adaptations By The Locomotor Systems Of Terrestrial And Amphibious Crabs Walking Freely On Land And Underwater, Jennifer Nuss Schreiner

LSU Master's Theses

What are the mechanisms underlying adaptation to load by locomotor systems? Amphibious shore crabs (Carcinus maenas) must routinely accommodate large load changes as they move in and out of water, where buoyancy supports a large percentage of their weight. Terrestrial fiddler crabs (Uca pugilator), aquatic red claw crabs (Sessarma mederi) and aquatic spider crabs (Libinia emarginata) are not routinely exposed to such large load changes. By comparing these species walking underwater and on land, it is possible to gain insight into general principles underlying load accommodation during locomotion. Crabs were videotaped walking freely in a behavioral arena, and a 3-D …

A Bio-Mems Device For Separation Of Breast Cancer Cells From Peripheral Whole Blood, Juan Feng Jan 2004

A Bio-Mems Device For Separation Of Breast Cancer Cells From Peripheral Whole Blood, Juan Feng

LSU Master's Theses

This work demonstrates the application of Bio-Micro Electro Mechanical System (Bio-MEMS) technology for early breast cancer detection and diagnosis. Early breast cancer detection and diagnosis typically uses conventional mammogram screening followed by biopsy, which can be problematic since mammography can only detect highly calcified tumors greater than 1 cm in size. A micro-device was developed to identify and specifically collect tumor cells of low abundance (1 tumor cell among 107 normal blood cells) from circulating whole blood. By immobilizing anti-EpCAM (Epithelial Cell Adhesion Molecule) antibodies on polymer micro-channel walls by the chemical surface modification of PMMA, breast cancer cells …

Mesoscopic Simulation Of Abnormal Grain Growth, Rakesh Kumar Behera Jan 2004

Mesoscopic Simulation Of Abnormal Grain Growth, Rakesh Kumar Behera

LSU Master's Theses

Grain growth is the process that takes place during annealing of polycrystalline materials; its major feature is a systematic increase in grain size. Two different types of grain growth can be distinguished: the normal and abnormal grain growth. During normal grain growth, the microstructure exhibits a uniform increase in grain size with time and the grain size distribution follows the log-normal distribution with the grain sizes ranging from 0 - 2.2 times the average grain size (R). On the contrary, when the abnormal grain growth is the dominant mechanism, there are certain grains (abnormal grains) in the microstructure that grow …

Post Monitoring Of A Cyclodextrin Remediated Chlorinated Solvent Contaminated Aquifer, Rebecca Mary Hinrichs Jan 2004

Post Monitoring Of A Cyclodextrin Remediated Chlorinated Solvent Contaminated Aquifer, Rebecca Mary Hinrichs

LSU Master's Theses

Hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPβCD) has been tested successfully in the laboratory and in the field for enhanced flushing of low-polarity contaminants from aquifers. The cyclodextrin molecule forms a toroidal structure, which has a hydrophobic cavity. Within this cavity, organic compounds of appropriate shape and size can form inclusion complexes, which is the basis for the use of cyclodextrin in groundwater remediation. The hydrophilic exterior of the molecule makes cyclodextrin highly water-soluble. The solubility of cyclodextrins can be further enhanced by adding functional groups, such as hydroxypropyl groups, to the cyclodextrin core. The aqueous solubility of HPβCD exceeds 950 g/L. These high solubilities …

Reliability And Concordance Of The Childhood Autism Rating Scale And Dsm-Iv In Adults With Severe And Profound Mental Retardation, Noha Farrah Minshawi Jan 2004

Reliability And Concordance Of The Childhood Autism Rating Scale And Dsm-Iv In Adults With Severe And Profound Mental Retardation, Noha Farrah Minshawi

LSU Master's Theses

Researchers and clinicians have long treated autism as though it were a disorder that only affected children. As a result, little literature is available on the diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of adults with autism. One of the first issues to address in this population is diagnosis. While several rating scales and diagnostic systems exist for surveying autistic behavior in children, researchers have not demonstrated the reliability of these scales for adults. The present study focused on two commonly used instruments, the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV). In the …

Determining Epigenetic Instability In Normal And Diseased Human Vulva, Kirk Hutchinson Jan 2004

Determining Epigenetic Instability In Normal And Diseased Human Vulva, Kirk Hutchinson

LSU Master's Theses

Epigenetics is defined as the study of heritable changes of DNA. One such component of epigenetic regulation is DNA methylation in humans. In neoplastic cells epigenetic controls are often dysregulated, especially in the promoter region of CpG islands. Global hypomethylation along with region specific hypermethylation of CpG islands in the promoter region of tumor suppressor is often indicative of neoplastic cells. In cancer, CpG island cytosine hypermethylation has been observed in more than fifty genes, including known tumor suppressor and DNA repair genes. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), lichen sclerosis (LS), and adjacent normal tissues were obtained by radical vulvectomies of …

An Analysis Of Cardiovascular And Respiratory Mortality As A Function Of Ambient Ozone And Fine Particulate Matter In The Baton Rouge Air Quality Control Region, Thomas James Wiley Iv Jan 2004

An Analysis Of Cardiovascular And Respiratory Mortality As A Function Of Ambient Ozone And Fine Particulate Matter In The Baton Rouge Air Quality Control Region, Thomas James Wiley Iv

LSU Master's Theses

The Baton Rouge Air Quality Control Region has come under fire due to difficulties in reaching attainment of one-hour daily ozone limitations and its general perception as being a polluted place to live. Ozone is a reactive oxygen species which has been shown to result in damage to biological molecules and is detrimental to human physiology, especially in regards to cardio-respiratory structure and function. In the last decade, fine particulate matter less than 2.5 microns in mean aerodynamic diameter have been identified as a possible pollutant that is affecting public health at levels lower than the EPA’s established limits. PM2.5 …

First Order Sigma-Delta Modulator Of An Oversampling Adc Design In Cmos Using Floating Gate Mosfets, Syam Prasad Sbs Kommana

LSU Master's Theses

We report a new architecture for a sigma-delta oversampling analog-to-digital converter (ADC) in which the first order modulator is realized using the floating gate MOSFETs at the input stage of an integrator and the comparator. The first order modulator is designed using an 8 MHz sampling clock frequency and implemented in a standard 1.5µm n-well CMOS process. The decimator is an off-chip sinc-filter and is programmed using the VERILOG and tested with Altera Flex EPF10K70RC240 FPGA board. The ADC gives an 8-bit resolution with a 65 kHz bandwidth.

Influence of media age, initial dark period, inoculation with Agrobacterium, and leaf maturity on the regeneration and genetic transformation of two strawberry cultivars was investigated. Four cultivars of blackberry and one raspberry were included to test their response to media age and dark period. Leaf strips of ‘Chandler’ and ‘Cardinal’ strawberry, blackberry, and raspberry were exposed to a four-week dark treatment on modified MS media and subcultured to fresh media. One group of leaf strips was left on the original media for the entire eight weeks. Another group of explants, along with the media treatments was given an additional four-week …

Impact Of Static Flexion Duration On The Development Of A Neuromuscular Disorder Of The Lumbar Spine, Rebecca Victoria Labry Jan 2004

Impact Of Static Flexion Duration On The Development Of A Neuromuscular Disorder Of The Lumbar Spine, Rebecca Victoria Labry

LSU Master's Theses

Many occupational groups work under adverse conditions in which their spinal columns are fully flexed under load for substantial periods of time. This study was designed to determine the response of the lumbar spine to a static load of a substantial duration under a range of load magnitudes. The impact of static loads of 20, 40 and 60N were applied over 30 min flexion, 10 min rest, and 30 min flexion (for a total of one hour exposure) followed by a 7 h rest. Lumbar viscoelastic creep (laxity) and reflex electromyographic (EMG) activity were monitored over both flexion periods and …

In Vitro Evaluation Of The Securos Cranial Cruciate Ligament Repair System And Fluorocarbon Leader Line For Use As Lateral Fabella-Tibial Sutures, Max Nielsen Banwell Jan 2004

In Vitro Evaluation Of The Securos Cranial Cruciate Ligament Repair System And Fluorocarbon Leader Line For Use As Lateral Fabella-Tibial Sutures, Max Nielsen Banwell

LSU Master's Theses

Cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture is a common injury in the dog and major cause of degenerative joint disease. The pathophysiology of CCL rupture in the dog is well described. Osteoarthritis secondary to CCL rupture causes severe pain and lameness. There are many surgical techniques accepted for dogs with CCL rupture. A commonly performed technique is an extracapsular repair with a lateral fabella-tibial suture (LFS) using large diameter nylon leader line (NLL). Mechanical demands placed upon the LFS are high requiring the material used be able to withstand a high amount of force, undergo minimal elongation, and have a high …

Regional-Scale Eutrophication Models: A Bayesian Treed Model Approach, Angelina Freeman Jan 2004

Regional-Scale Eutrophication Models: A Bayesian Treed Model Approach, Angelina Freeman

LSU Master's Theses

Utilizing Bayesian hierarchical techniques, regional-scale eutrophication models were developed for use in the Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) process. The Bayesian tree-based (BTREED) approach allows association of multiple environmental stressors with biological responses, and quantification of uncertainty sources in the water quality model. Simple parametric models are often inadequate for describing complex datasets; the BTREED approach partitions the dataset, and describes the localized subsets of data with linear models, thereby providing a comprehensive representation of stressor and response interactions. Nutrient criteria data for lakes, ponds and reservoirs across the United States were obtained from the Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) …

Carrot cubes were ohmically heated with 2 different frequencies 1 Hz and 60 Hz to evaluate change in color, texture and rehydration properties. Carrot samples were stored under 4 different relative humidity (RH) conditions 11.1 %, 32.7%, 55.7 % and 75.3 %. Experiments were conducted to monitor the textural parameters of hardness, fracturability, adhesiveness, cohesiveness and chewiness and color changes in terms of CIE color values. Results showed that the hardness, fracturability and adhesiveness of 1- Hz samples stored at 75.3 % RH were different from those at 55.7 % RH. The adhesiveness, cohesiveness and chewiness of 1-Hz samples were …

The Fidelity Of Red Snapper (Lutjanus Campechanus) To Petroleum Platforms And Artificial Reefs In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Megan Blythe Peabody Jan 2004

The Fidelity Of Red Snapper (Lutjanus Campechanus) To Petroleum Platforms And Artificial Reefs In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Megan Blythe Peabody

LSU Master's Theses

The habitat value of petroleum platforms for red snapper, Lutjanus campechanus, is poorly understood. However, it is widely recognized by both scientists and fishermen that the presence of platforms in the northern Gulf of Mexico (GOM) has affected the distribution of red snapper by the addition of hard substrate habitat. I evaluated the habitat value of standing and toppled platforms by monitoring the fidelity of red snapper to these structures with acoustic telemetry. In May 2003, 125 red snapper were captured with hook and line at several platforms in a 35-km2 portion of the South Timbalier oil and gas lease …

Heidegger's Relationship To Kantian And Post-Kantian Thought, Ryan S. Hellmers Jan 2004

Heidegger's Relationship To Kantian And Post-Kantian Thought, Ryan S. Hellmers

LSU Master's Theses

I provide a close analysis of truth and freedom in Heidegger’s work during the passage from Being and Time (Sein und Zeit) in 1927 to the Contributions to Philosophy (Beiträge zur Philosophie) in 1938. This analysis demonstrates the passage from a Kantian style transcendental analysis of the self to an Idealist inspired study of being-historical thinking. Throughout this shift in thinking, the work of Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph von Schelling is shown to play an increasingly decisive role in Heidegger’s thought, finally leading him to an understanding of the self in terms of freedom, community, culture, and history that carries important …

Evaluation Of Rough Brucella Strains As Vaccines For Brucellosis And Pseudorabies In Swine, Lorraine Harrow Molin Jan 2004

Evaluation Of Rough Brucella Strains As Vaccines For Brucellosis And Pseudorabies In Swine, Lorraine Harrow Molin

LSU Master's Theses

Brucellosis and pseudorabies lead to abortion in pregnant sows and are perpetuated by feral swine reservoirs. A multivalent oral vaccine for these diseases would improve vaccination and eradication programs worldwide. Previous studies have shown that the rough attenuated Brucella strains RB51 and VTRS1, when administered subcutaneously to swine, stimulate host immune responses, transiently colonize tissues, and provide partial protection against virulent B. suis infection in pregnant sows. A plasmid encoding for the pseudorabies virus glycoprotein D (PRV gD) has also been added to these strains as part of this project. This study evaluates the use of these strains as oral …

The Effects Of Nutrient Enrichment On The Decomposition Of Belowground Organic Matter In A Sagittaria Lancifolia - Dominated Oligohaline Marsh, Kristen Raye Laursen Jan 2004

The Effects Of Nutrient Enrichment On The Decomposition Of Belowground Organic Matter In A Sagittaria Lancifolia - Dominated Oligohaline Marsh, Kristen Raye Laursen

LSU Master's Theses

Wetlands improve water quality through sedimentation and the uptake of excess nutrients. As human population increases in the coastal zone, wetlands receive greater nutrient inputs. These additional nutrients may accelerate microbial activity, leading to faster decomposition rates. This decomposition could exceed belowground organic matter production, resulting in a net reduction in soil organic matter accumulation and vertical marsh accretion. The effects of nutrient enrichment on belowground organic matter decomposition in subtropical marshes have received little attention. As such, this research examined the effects of four levels of nitrogen combined with two levels of phosphorus enrichment on belowground decomposition through the …
