Reconstructing The Fables: Women On The Educational Cyberfrontier, Jim Dwight
Reconstructing The Fables: Women On The Educational Cyberfrontier, Jim Dwight
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
Computer technology and the Internet inspire narratives based upon modernist tropes. The frontier narrative stands out as one of the most intriguing tropes. Often the language for the Internet regulation and administration of computers, particularly in education, plays on tropes of the Wild, Wild West. Sojourners brave the untamed expanses of cyberspace laying claim to virgin territories. Often, writers represent the frontier as a pure form of woman, the object of masculine desires for conquest such as Natty Bumppo's symbolic marriage to the disappearing frontier in James Cooper's The Last of the Mohicans (1981 [1826]), Odysseus' conquest of …

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
The scene is now familiar. The cities of the world are in ruins. The Empire State Building obliterated. The White House reduced to rubble. The remnants of humankind gather in the desert, scrounging together what remains of their air defence systems for one last effort to repulse the alien invaders. Haggard but determined, the last American President prepares to lead his motley crew of resistance fighters into the fray. He takes the hand mic, tests it once or twice, and his voice crackles over the speakers. In less than one hour, he announces, aircraft from here will join …

The Mechanism Of Inhibition Of Human Erythrocyte Catalase By Azide, Yasemi̇n Aksoy, Mevhi̇be Balk, Hamdi̇ Öğüş, Nazmi̇ Özer
Turkish Journal of Biology
In order to elucidate the kinetic mechanism of human erythrocyte catalase a well-known substrate, H_2O_2 and inhibitor azide were used. The catalase-mediated conversion of H_2O_2 to H_2O and O_2, in the presence and absence of azide, was studied in 50 mM phosphate buffer pH 7.0 at 37 ºC under conditions where the peroxidation side reaction (RH_2 + H_2O_2 R + 2H_2O) is negligible ([H_2O_2] =< 25 mM; assay time, 10 s). The kinetics conformed to the Michaelis-Menten model. Lineweaver-Burk plots for H_2O_2 at different fixed concentrations of azide were linear and intersected on the abscissa indicating a noncompetitive or irreversible type of inhibition. To identify the inhibition type Vm vs. [E] plots were constructed at different [N_3-]. The plots were linear and converged at the origin, indicating that N_3- is a noncompetitive inhibitor. Using a non-linear curve-fitting program, the kinetic parameters were calculated. The K_m value for H_2O_2, and the K_i value for azide were found to be 10.97 ± 1.46 mM and 1.107 ± 0.093 µM, respectively.

Influence Of Arbuscular Mycorrhiza On Some Physiological Growth Parameters Of Pepper, Semra Demi̇r
Turkish Journal of Biology
Arbuscular Mycorrhiza (AM) is a symbiotic association between plant roots and certain soil fungi. Mycorrhiza establishment is known to modify several aspects of plant physiology such as mineral nutrient composition, hormonal balance, and C allocation patterns. In this study, the effect of the Arbuscular Mycorrhizal fungus Glomus intraradices Schenck & Smith on the physiological growth parameters of pepper (Capsicum annuum L. cv Cetinel-150) plants was investigated. To explain the physiological growth of these plants, some physiological growth parameters were determined in the shoots and leaves of mycorrhizal (M) and nonmycorrhizal (NM) plants such as the P and dry matter (d.m.) …

The Use Of Ram Horn Hydrolysate As A Supplement For Glycerol Production By Yeast, Esabi̇ Başaran Kurbanoğlu, Namudar İzzet Kurbanoğlu
Turkish Journal of Biology
This study describes the interesting potential of ram horns to be used as a supplement for glycerol production in batch fermentation. The use of ram horn hydrolysate (RHH) as a supplement for glycerol production was investigated using baker’s yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae. For this purpose, RHH was first produced. The production and chemical composition of the RHH was as described in our previous study. The effects of different concentrations (1 to 10% v/v) of RHH on the production of glycerol were investigated, and 8% RHH was found to be optimal. The content of glycerol in the culture broth containing RHH (6.3 …

Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) is an optically active, biocompatible and biodegradable polymer that has been widely investigated as an artificial cell scaffold material. In its most crystalline form, PLLA is highly anisotropic and is one of the most piezoelectric polymers known. Conversely, amorphous PLLA exhibits little, if any, piezoelectric behavior. Compression molded PLLA films can be endowed with varying amounts of crystalline character and piezoelectricity by uniaxially stretching the polymer in a hot air bath. Understanding the precise crystalline architecture of PLLA that results from tensile drawing is important for constructing cell scaffolds that have highly tailored biodegradation and cell guiding …

Characterization Of The Regulatory Gene, Mpkb, By Overexpression Studies In The Model Fungus, Aspergillus Nidulans, Maie M. Seif
Honors Capstones
The main goal of this research was to understand the function of the mpkB gene (a mitogen activated protein kinases gene, MAPK) in the model fungus Aspergillus nidulans. Due to the similarity in DNA sequence with other homologous genes found in other fungi, such as Fus3 and Kss 1 genes in yeast, it is predicted that mpkB will also have a similar function. This research was conducted by transforming A. nidulans with a plasmid containing the mpkB gene attached to a strong inducible promoter, ale A. The plasmids also contain an auxotrophic marker for selection purposes, trpC. Results of this …

Interactive Computer Music For Double Bass, Jeremy C. Baguyos
Music Faculty Publications
The rise of the academy as patron of art music, the philosophical underpinnings of "futurists" like Russolo and Busoni, the increasing power and cost-effectiveness of computer-based systems and the new compositional directions of the Post World War II avant-garde have all contributed to establishing the genre of electroacoustic music in the United States. Composers have increasingly turned to electronics for new source material and as a result, there is an entirely new repertoire that was generated to take advantage of the emerging technologies and aesthetics. For the double bass, this new repertoire included compositions like Jacob Druckman's Synapse/Valentine (1969), Charles …

Over the last decade, research has examined the endocrine-disrupting action of various environmental pollutants, including hormones, pharmaceuticals, and surfactants, in sewage treatment plant effluent. Responding to the growth of concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) and the pollutants present in their wastewater (e.g., nutrients, pharmaceuticals, and hormones), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency developed a new rule that tightens the regulation of CAFOs. In this study, we collected wild fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) exposed to feedlot effluent (FLE) and observed significant alterations in their reproductive biology. Male fish were demasculinized (having lower testicular testosterone synthesis, altered head morphometrics, and smaller …

Silver-haired bats (Lasionycteris noctivagans) were thought only to migrate through Nebraska; however, recent surveys in eastern Nebraska report summer records of females and their young. Our study in western Nebraska also shows that silver-haired bats are summer residents. We discovered the 1st reproductively active L. noctivagans in this part of the state. We caught lactating females and volant young in riparian forests along the North Platte River and in forested areas of the Pine Ridge. Previously, adult males were not known from Nebraska in summer, and only 4 records of L. noctivagans were known from western Nebraska during …

When Are Behaviour Networks Well-Behaved?, Bernhard Nebel, Yuliya Lierler
Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Agents operating in the real world have to deal with a constantly changing and only partially predictable environment and are nevertheless expected to choose reasonable actions quickly. This problem is addressed by a number of action-selection mechanisms. Behaviour networks as proposed by Maes are one such mechanism, which is quite popular. In general, it seems not possible to predict when behaviour networks are well-behaved. However, they perform quite well in the robotic soccer context. In this paper, we analyse the reason for this success by identifying conditions that make behaviour networks goal converging, i.e., force them to reach the goals …
Redefining Intimacy: Carver And Conversation, Frank Bramlett, David Raabe
Redefining Intimacy: Carver And Conversation, Frank Bramlett, David Raabe
English Faculty Publications
Raymond Carver's short story "Intimacy," a poignant exploration of the relationship between an ex-husband and ex-wife, paints for the reader a picture of this ex-couple's rocky history and their current estrangement. The ex-husband narrator, a relatively well-known writer of fiction, arrives unannounced at his ex-wife's home, and she lets him in. While this scene is ordinary enough, Carver's telling of the story is unique. The story itself consists largely of dialogue; there is precious little in the way of action, setting, or exposition. In comparison to most fiction, the proportions of this dialogue are highly skewed: the ex-wife unequivocally dominates …
