Garlic mustard [Alliaria petiolata [(M. Bieb) Cavara & Grande; Brassicaceae] is a European native biennial herb, first recorded on Long Island, NY in the 1860s, and is expanding rapidly in northeastern and midwestern forests in the U.S. and in southern Canada. Garlic mustard flourishes in moist woodlands with moderate exposure to light, but it can grow in a diversity of other habitats. It is found in natural areas, woodlots, and along edges of agricultural fields and lawns throughout North America. Several life history traits likely contribute to the invasiveness of this species. We studied the effect of segmented solvent molecules on the free energy of transfer of small molecules from water into alkanes (hexane, heptane, octane, decane, dodecane, tetradecane, and hexadecane). For these alkanes we measured partition coefficients of benzene, 3-methylindole (3MI), 2,3,4,6-tetrachlorophenol (TeCP), and 2,4,6-tribromophenol (TriBP) at 3, 11, 20, 3, and 47 °C. For 3MI, TeCP, and TriBP the dependence of free energy of transfer on length of alkane chains was found to be very different from that for benzene. Startling numbers of people die every day because they do not have access to essential medicines and treatment for diseases such as HIV/AIDS, particularly in Africa and Asia. The Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) was established by the World Trade Organization (WTO) to set a minimum level of protection of intellectual property rights across international borders, as well as promote and protect the welfare of humanity. This Comment reviews the history of the TRIPS Agreement, including the most recent adoption of the WTO relating to the issuance of compulsory licenses. Specifically, this Comment suggests that the …

Toxic red tides, such as the one that poisoned PEI in 1987, are a coastal aquatic phenomenon that cause harm to wildlife and humans alike, seemingly with increasing frequency. They appear tied to nutrient pollution of aquatic habitats, especially by the food-producing industries, such as aquaculture and industrial farming. Canada has made (non-binding) global commitments to protect marine waters from such land-based pollution, resulting in its ‘National Program of Action’. To date, however, Canada’s attempts to meet this goal have been hampered by the federal division of powers, and by an overall fragmented legal protection for the aquatic environment. Respecting …

This paper was developed as a result of the author’s involvement with the Nova Scotia Rainbow Action Project in Halifax, Nova Scotia, who are planning an action whereby a member of the group will submit a complaint of discrimination to the provincial Human Rights Commission, contrary to the Nova Scotia Human Rights Act, on the ground of sex. The complaint will be based on a memberʼs denial of Nova Scotia Medical Services Insurance coverage for sex reassignment surgery, which is prohibited in Nova Scotia. Privacy as a protected right for employees in the United States is grounded in several constitutional provisions. Most generally, the notion of privacy is associated with confidentiality of information , which is protected under both the Liberty Clause of the Constitution's Fourteenth Amendment and the Fourth Amendment's protection from unreasonable searches and seizures. However, an expanded understanding of privacy can find protection under the concepts of the right of association protected under the Liberty Clause and the First Amendment, expression of ideas under the Free Speech Clause of the First Amendment, and practice of one's religious beliefs under the Free …

West Nile Virus is currently affecting human and animal life in North America. This Virus has been a popular topic among researchers, health professionals, and state health departments because of its rapid emergence as a threat to human and animal populations. In this article, I will be discussing the symptomology associated with West Nile Virus and the disease's pattern of transmission. Furthermore, I will describe procedures for diagnosing and treating West Nile Virus and minimizing its future spread into human populations. I will conclude this article by predicting how the West Nile Virus will impact South Dakotans in 2004.

Nuclear pore complexes (NPCs) play an essential role in RNA export. Nucleoporins required for mRNA export in Saccharomyces cerevisiae are found in the Nup84p and Nup82p subcomplexes of the NPC. The Nup82p subcomplex contains Nup82p, Rat7p/Nup159p, Nsp1p, Gle1p/Rss1p, and Rip1p/Nup42p and is found only on the cytoplasmic face of NPCs. Both Rat7p and Gle1p contain binding sites for Rat8p/Dbp5p, an essential DEAD box protein and putative RNA helicase. Rip1p interacts directly with Gle1p and is the only protein known to be essential for mRNA export after heat shock but not under normal growth conditions. We report that in cells lacking …

For the last seven years, a summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates site in structural engineering, funded by the National Science Foundation, has operated at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. During this time, 33 students from 22 colleges and universities have participated in the site. Participants are recruited nationally and have come from as far away as California and Puerto Rico.
