Hydrogen Sulfide Flux Measurements And Dispersion Modeling From Constr, Sangho Eun Jan 2004

Hydrogen Sulfide Flux Measurements And Dispersion Modeling From Constr, Sangho Eun

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Odor problems are a common complaint from residents living near landfills. Many compounds can cause malodorous conditions. However, hydrogen sulfide (h2s) has been identified as a principal odorous component from construction and demolition (c&d)debris landfills. Although several studies have reported the ambient concentrations of h2s near c&d landfills, few studies have quantified emission rates of h2s. The most widely used and proven technique for measuring gas emission rates from landfills is the flux chamber method. Typically the flux chamber is a cylindrical enclosure device with a spherical top which limits the gas emission area. Pure zero grade air is introduced …

Lessons From The Protracted Mox Plant Dispute: A Proposed Protocal On Marine Environmental Impact Assessment To The United Nations Convention On The Law Of The Sea, Maki Tanaka Jan 2004

Lessons From The Protracted Mox Plant Dispute: A Proposed Protocal On Marine Environmental Impact Assessment To The United Nations Convention On The Law Of The Sea, Maki Tanaka

Michigan Journal of International Law

Although the ITLOS order attempted to facilitate dialogue between the parties, the Tribunal was incapable of addressing the root cause of the MOX plant controversy, namely the lack of an adequate mechanism for transboundary environmental impact assessment at the onset of the conflict under UNCLOS. Similarly, the OSPAR and Annex VII tribunals have failed to bring about the efficient resolution of this procedural environmental dispute. This Article addresses the prevention of similar incidents by proposing the creation of a marine environmental impact assessment protocol to UNCLOS to make assessment procedures operational from the initial stage of controversial projects.

Regulation Of Stem Cell Research: A Recommendation That The United States Adopt The Australian Approach, Bryn E. Floyd Jan 2004

Regulation Of Stem Cell Research: A Recommendation That The United States Adopt The Australian Approach, Bryn E. Floyd

Washington International Law Journal

Research using embryonic stem cells may lead to great medical advances because of their ability to differentiate into nearly any type of human tissue. Currently, the United States regulates embryonic stem cell research by limiting the stem cell lines that can be studied using federal money or by scientists working at federally-funded institutions. The states are left to regulate privately funded research, if they choose. This creates a situation in which federally-funded research is severely limited, while private funds may be used to conduct ethically problematic research. In contrast, the Australian Parliament has passed legislation regulating embryonic stem cell research …

The Security Council As "Global Legislator": Ultra Vires Or Ultra Innovative?, Eric Rosand Jan 2004

The Security Council As "Global Legislator": Ultra Vires Or Ultra Innovative?, Eric Rosand

Fordham International Law Journal

This Article begins by taking a closer look at the two Security Council resolutions at the center of this debate: Resolution 1373 and Resolution 1540. It argues that they make pragmatic sense as necessary responses by the Security Council to address urgent, global threats. Further, it explains how they serve to fill the existing gaps in international law, which, if not addressed, would hinder the international community's ability to tackle these twenty-first century threats. Part II, after providing a brief summary of the Council's powers under the U.N. Charter, focuses on whether this activity falls within the Security Council's mandate. …

Population Genetic Structure In Nolina Brittoniana (Agavaceae), A Plant Endemic To The Central Ridges Of Florida, Rebecca W. Dolan, Rebecca Yahr, Eric S. Menges Jan 2004

Population Genetic Structure In Nolina Brittoniana (Agavaceae), A Plant Endemic To The Central Ridges Of Florida, Rebecca W. Dolan, Rebecca Yahr, Eric S. Menges

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Nolina brittoniana is endemic to the central ridges of peninsular Florida. Its scrub and sandhill habitats have suffered extensive anthropogenic modification. Analysis of isozymes from populations throughout its range revealed less genetic variation than generally reported for endemic plants. Populations were well differentiated, with significant clines in allele frequency along the north-south axis of distribution. Pair-wise F-statistics calculated at four levels of population geographic substructure revealed that current and inferred historical habitat patches had similar genetic structure. We found no evidence of recent bottlenecks or changes in genetic structure due to habitat loss and fragmentation, consistent with populations having always …

Assessment And Conservation Of Aquatic Life In The Subsurface Of The Pilbara Region, Western Australia, Harley J. Barron, James Cocking, Stefan Eberhard

KIP Talks and Conferences

To provide a framework for assessment of mine development projects in the Pilbara, as well to plan conservation of groundwater biodiversity, the Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM) is undertaking a five-year survey (2002 to 2007) of Pilbara stygofauna. The project aims to map regional patterns in subterranean biodiversity by sampling the range of groundwater environments that can be accessed via bores, wells, caves, springs, spring-brooks and hyporheic habitats. The first year of sampling has revealed many new stygal species, and indicate that stygofauna is abundant and widely distributed across the region, and occurs in several different aquifer types. …

Distribution, Habitat Use, Growth, And Condition Of A Native And An Introduced Catfish Species In The Hudson River Estuary, Stephen M. Jordan, Robert M. Neumann, Eric T. Schultz

EEB Articles

White catfish (Ameiurus catus) is native to the Hudson River and is now coexisting with the recently established channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus). These species were sampled from four freshwater reaches and four habitat types of the Hudson River estuary to assess whether the two species overlapped in their habitat use, and whether any impact on the native species was evident. Catfishes were sampled in 1998 and 1999 using baited hoop nets (N = 708 net nights). Catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE, number of fish per net night; total catch = 368) of white catfish was significantly different among reaches …

Multiculturalism And The Future Of Tribal Sovereignty, Scott C. Idleman Jan 2004

Multiculturalism And The Future Of Tribal Sovereignty, Scott C. Idleman

Faculty Publications

American Indian tribes would appear to be natural constituents and beneficiaries of the multiculturalism movement. Their members are generally conceptualized as racial or ethnic minorities; they have endured social and legal oppression and continue to encounter structural and even intentional discrimination; and, not least importantly, they possess genuinely different cultures and consequently add diverse perspectives to society. Despite this apparent fit, this Article questions the extent to which tribes and tribal members actually should align themselves with multicultural proponents and initiatives. The basis for this inquiry is that, unlike other societal subgroups, each recognized tribe is a distinct geopolitical entity …

Meta-Analysis, Spatial, And Temporal Models To Analyze The Possible Association Between Childhood Leukemia In Proximity To Nuclear Facilities, Peter Baker Jan 2004

Meta-Analysis, Spatial, And Temporal Models To Analyze The Possible Association Between Childhood Leukemia In Proximity To Nuclear Facilities, Peter Baker

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation was to gain a better understanding of the possible association between childhood leukemia and nuclear facilities by conducting a meta-analysis and by the use of spatial and temporal models with respect to Pickering Nuclear Generator (PNG) in Ontario, Canada. The meta-analysis was conducted to combine and statistically analyze the many studies of childhood leukemia in the vicinity of nuclear facilities. Our focus was on studies that calculated SMRs or SIRs for individual nuclear sites. Due to variability between studies in defining age and geographic zones, eight separate analyses were performed based on age and zone …

Sibling Relationships In Remarried Families, Monique C. Diderich Balsam Jan 2004

Sibling Relationships In Remarried Families, Monique C. Diderich Balsam

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This research project examines how different types of sibling relationships, that is, full siblings, half siblings and stepsiblings, develop within remarried families. The study focuses on three types of sibling solidarity: functional (i.e., instrumental help and assistance); associational (i.e., frequency of contact); and affectual (i.e., emotional closeness). The study further analyzes the effects of sibship size, proximity, birth order, marital status and age and gender on the three forms of solidarity, and relies on five middle range theories (attachment theory, family systems theory, rational choice, social comparison, and evolutionary theory). The study is based on participant observation in a Blended …

The Microbiology Of The Las Vegas Wash, Angela L Rosenblatt Jan 2004

The Microbiology Of The Las Vegas Wash, Angela L Rosenblatt

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Las Vegas Wash, the only drainage channel for the Las Vegas hydrographic basin, drains to Lake Mead, the major source of drinking water for the Las Vegas valley. High levels of fecally-associated bacteria are observed in the Wash, particularly during the summer months; Several studies were undertaken to investigate the indicator organisms in the Las Vegas Wash. Attempts were made to determine the source(s) of fecal bacteria, with results pointing toward overall species being environmentally-associated as opposed to being a result of human contributions. Wash enterococci showed high resistance to low levels of vancomycin. Regrowth potential of Escherichia coli …
