United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District

A series of column studies, using site-specific soil and groundwater, were conducted to determine the feasibility of biologically active zone enhancement (BAZE) process for reductive biotransformation of hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) in groundwater. This treatability study examined the use of four amendments (acetate, ethanol, soluble starch, and acetate plus ammonium), which served as electron donors. Triplicate columns, with groundwater residence time of about 27.5 h, were used for each amendment treatment and the amendment control. In treatment columns amendment dosing was 500 mg/L C for carbon sources and 100 mg/L N for ammonium. Each of the amendment treatments reduced RDX inlet concentrations …

Neuroplasticity And Functional Recovery: Training Models And Compensatory Strategies In Music Therapy, Felicity Baker, Edward A. Roth Jan 2004

Neuroplasticity And Functional Recovery: Training Models And Compensatory Strategies In Music Therapy, Felicity Baker, Edward A. Roth

BRAIN Lab Research

New research developments in the recovery of function following neurological trauma as well as basic and applied research relevant to music perception and production, seem to point to the suggestion that specific music therapy interventions that directly address the restoration of function as opposed to developing compensatory mechanisms, in certain circumstances, may now be a more appropriate treatment approach. We will address the issue of appropriate timing for the introduction of each strategy and discuss potential outcomes of each approach. As one might imagine, much of this research is published in the neurological journals, which music therapists may not regularly …

Mechanical Design Of Mussell Byssus: Load Cycle And Strain Rate Dependence, Emily Carrington, John M. Gosline Jan 2004

Mechanical Design Of Mussell Byssus: Load Cycle And Strain Rate Dependence, Emily Carrington, John M. Gosline

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The ability to produce a strong byssal attachment is one key to the competitive dominance of mussels on many rocky shores. The byssus is composed of numerous extracellular collagenous threads, which in turn can be divided into proximal and distal regions that are distinct in ultrastructure and chemical composition. Our current understanding of the mechanical design of mussel byssus is largely based on quasi-static testing, where a fiber is slowly extended to failure. Mussels in nature, however, inhabit a dynamic environment where repetitive loads can be applied on short time scales. This study evaluates the mechanical properties of the threads …

Allometric Length-Weight Relationships For Benthic Prey Of Aquatic Wildlife In Coastal Marine Habitats, Richard A. Mckinney, Sarah M. Glatt, Scott R. Williams

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

We developed models to estimate the soft tissue content of benthic marine invertebrates that are prey for aquatic wildlife. Allometric regression models of tissue wet weight with shell length for 10 species of benthic invertebrates had r2 values ranging from 0.29 for hermit crabs Pagurus longicarpus to 0.98 for green crabs Carcinus maenas. As a class, bivalves had the highest r2 values (0.84) and crustaceans the lowest (0.48). Energy and nutrient content of soft tissue is also presented for the 10 benthic species. The energy content was lowest in crabs, and ranged within 2.20–4.71 kcal g-1 dry …

Investigating Fluctuating Asymmetry Of The Larval Damselfly, Calopteryx Maculata (Odonata: Calopterigidae), Edward Kelliher Jan 2004

Investigating Fluctuating Asymmetry Of The Larval Damselfly, Calopteryx Maculata (Odonata: Calopterigidae), Edward Kelliher

Undergraduate Review

Fluctuating asymmetry (FA), or subtle random deviations from perfect bilateral symmetry, has recently become a useful tool in allowing researchers to understand more about an organism's health, fitness, developmental stability and environmental stressors. Ultimately, FA studies can be used as an indirect measurement of the quality of an aquatic system over time. We measured and examined the femur segments of the larval damselfly, Calopteryx maculata from sites on the Town, Hockomock, and Salisbury Plain Rivers, of Plymouth County, Massachusetts to determine FA levels. After accounting for measurement error, preliminary results show that variations in symmetry are not correlated to individual …

A Genetic Algorithms Approach To Learning Communication And Coordination In Simulated Robots, Chris Sotzing Jan 2004

A Genetic Algorithms Approach To Learning Communication And Coordination In Simulated Robots, Chris Sotzing

Senior Scholar Papers

This project is motivated by an existing robot system for mapping unknown environments and attempts to improve its effectiveness through the use of genetic algorithms. Using a robot simulator, the mapping system is created using simulated robots and a simulated environment. The robots are controlled by a supervisor agent that makes the high-level decisions about tasks for individual robots to complete to accomplish the mapping effort. This research investigates the ability of adding a genetic algorithm learning component to the supervisor to improve its ability to coordinate the robotic agents.

Chronological Patterns Of Emergence Of Dragonflies In Carver Pond, Bridgewater, Ma, Chris Haslam Jan 2004

Chronological Patterns Of Emergence Of Dragonflies In Carver Pond, Bridgewater, Ma, Chris Haslam

Undergraduate Review

In this study larval skins of dragonflies were collected counted and studied in order to find peaks and patterns of emergence and correlate with environmental factors. One of the most important stages of the life of a dragonfly is the time when it changes from a larval aquatic insect into a flying adult. This stage takes place when the dragonfly emerges out of its skin called the exuvia. Exuvia were collected from two sites at Carver Pond, Bridgewater, Massachusetts to determine differences in species emergence patterns from May 26, 2003 to July 18, 2003 and correlated with environmental conditions. Peak …

Zebrafish Cone Contributions And Erg Waveforms As Impacted By Cnqx, Margaret G. Au Jan 2004

Zebrafish Cone Contributions And Erg Waveforms As Impacted By Cnqx, Margaret G. Au

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The effect of the glutamate antagonist CNQX (6-cyano-7-nitroquinoxaline-2,3dione) on Off-bipolar cells in the zebrafish (Dania reria) was examined. CNQX has suppressed the d-wave component of electroretinogram (ERG) in other species. Here, adult zebrafish received an injection ofCNQX or saline solution. They were then presented 200 ms stimuli at 17 wavelengths and several irradiances. Spectral sensitivity was calculated from the b-wave components ofthe ERG responses. Retinal injection of CNQX impacted the a-, b-, and d-waves ofthe ERG, especially at longer wavelengths. Significant differences in the spectral sensitivity functions of the CNQX and saline groups were found at 460 nm and 540 …

A Turn To Engineering: The Continuing Struggle Of Technology Education For Legitimization As A School Subject, Theodore Lewis Jan 2004

A Turn To Engineering: The Continuing Struggle Of Technology Education For Legitimization As A School Subject, Theodore Lewis

Publications

In the long march from manual training, the subject which today we call technology education has always had to contend with the question of its legitimacy as valid school knowledge. In this regard, it shares a similar history of struggle with other subjects whose initial entry into the curriculum was based on a utilitarian rather than an academic rationale. Goodson (1983) documents such cases (e.g. geography and biology) showing how in their struggle for acceptance, the primary strategy of advocates was to try to enhance the academic bona fides of their subject. He explained that utilitarian knowledge is associated with …
