A 1200 Year Record Of Hydrologic Variability In The Sierra Nevada From Sediments In Walker Lake, Nevada, Fasong Yuan, Braddock K. Linsley, Steve P. Lund, John P. Mcgeehin Mar 2004

A 1200 Year Record Of Hydrologic Variability In The Sierra Nevada From Sediments In Walker Lake, Nevada, Fasong Yuan, Braddock K. Linsley, Steve P. Lund, John P. Mcgeehin

Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications

Measurements of the oxygen isotopic composition (δ18O) of the total inorganic carbon (TIC) fraction from cored sediments of Walker Lake, Nevada, were conducted at an average resolution of ∼3 years per sample over the last 1200 years. On the basis of radiocarbon analysis on the total organic carbon (TOC) fraction, a δ18O time series was created to reconstruct changes in hydrologic conditions back to AD 800. The timings of variations in the TIC δ18O record are generally consistent with the tree ring-based Sacramento River flow record spanning AD 869 to 1977, indicating that Walker …

Suspended Animation: The Implementation Of The Hague Convention On Intercountry Adoption In The United States And Romania, Sarah Sargent Mar 2004

Suspended Animation: The Implementation Of The Hague Convention On Intercountry Adoption In The United States And Romania, Sarah Sargent

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

Recent high profile cases in the popular media highlight on going problems with intercountry adoption. These cases involved the sending of infants from the United States to families in the United Kingdom who had not been approved for adoption under United Kingdom standards. This is despite the efforts in each country to enact the protections afforded to children under the Hague Convention on Protection of Children and Co-operation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption although at the time of the adoptions, these protections were not yet in force in either country. Are these headline cases of intercountry adoption gone catastrophically wrong …

Independent Evaluation Of The Corrective Measures Study, Mixed Waste Landfill, Sandia National Laboratories, Citizen Action (Through New Mexico Community Foundation), Amanda Schneider, Marvin Resnikoff, Ph.D.

Citizen Action (through New Mexico Community Foundation)

The Mixed Waste Landfill (MWL) covers 2.6 acres of technical area 3 at Sandia National Laboratories (SNL). It is approximately 5 miles southeast of Albuquerque International Sunport, at the edge of the rapidly developing city of Albuquerque. The region is arid. An aquifer approximately 460 feet below the MWL is the source for Albuquerque’s public drinking water. The landfill was operational from March 1959 to December 1988, accepting wastes from both SNL and other sites. The inventory of wastes deposited in the landfill from 1959 to 1964 is still classified by the Department of Energy and is unavailable. The wastes …

International Adoption & International Comity: When Is Adoption “Repugnant”?, Malinda L. Seymore Mar 2004

International Adoption & International Comity: When Is Adoption “Repugnant”?, Malinda L. Seymore

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

Part II of this Article will examine the doctrine of international comity, traditionally thought to give courts the power to recognize foreign decrees, as it applies to international adoption. First, the ability of courts to recognize foreign decrees of "status" generally will be discussed. Next, the focus will be on courts' authority to recognize the parent-child status created by foreign adoptions. This subpart will also review treaties and statutes that touch on the recognition of foreign adoption decrees. Part III will consider a traditional limitation on comity-that courts need not accept judgments that are "repugnant" or against the public policy …

The Hand That Rocks The Cradle: How Children’S Literature Reflects Motherhood, Identity, And International Adoption, Susan Ayres Mar 2004

The Hand That Rocks The Cradle: How Children’S Literature Reflects Motherhood, Identity, And International Adoption, Susan Ayres

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

Children's books are "a source of law" for children because "[children] are constantly trying to make sense of what is going on around them, and although literature itself is only a constituent of life experience, as a constituent it is potentially of the greatest importance. As adults and lawyers, we can also read children's books as a source of law because they reflect patriarchal ideologies about the family and stigma surrounding adoption. Like other myths, children's books tell stories about origins and constitute not only subjects but are also the foundation of law by reflecting legal norms and projecting legal …

Personal Mosquito Repellents Available In South Dakota — 2004, Michael A. Catangui, James A. Wilson

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

The most commonly available insect repellents contain either DEET or permethrin. This publication provides information on specific repellents that are registered for sale in South Dakota in Spring 2004. Personal mosquito repellents are products that can be applied directly onto the human skin or clothing for the purpose of repelling or killing adult mosquitoes. While repellents containing the chemical DEET can be applied directly on human skin and clothing, products containing the insecticide permethrin cannot. Permethrin must be applied only on clothing or related apparels such as hats, shoes, and overalls several hours before being worn. Organic alternatives to DEET or …

Development Of A Multidimensional Scale To Measure Attitudes Toward Workers With A Disability, John Kegley Mar 2004

Development Of A Multidimensional Scale To Measure Attitudes Toward Workers With A Disability, John Kegley

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Existing measures of attitudes toward individuals with a disability have been shown to suffer from several shortcomings in their application in organizational settings. Indirect measurement has been beyond the scope of most organizations due to the complex and expensive implementation of these methods. Direct measures have been shown to be susceptible to threats to internal validity, such as reactivity and socially desirable responding. Further, existing direct measures have focused on unidimensional aspects of attitudes toward individuals with disabilities. Research, however, has demonstrated that attitudes are multidimensional in nature. There is a need for a multidimensional scale to tap those underlying …

Essay Review: A Marxist Critique Of Michael Apple’S Neo-Marxist Approach To Educational Reform, Ramin Farahmandpur Mar 2004

Essay Review: A Marxist Critique Of Michael Apple’S Neo-Marxist Approach To Educational Reform, Ramin Farahmandpur

Educational Leadership and Policy Faculty Publications and Presentations

This essay review examines Apple's most recent work. It begins by providing a brief historical account of Marxist educational theory since the late 1970s. Next, it offers an analysis and a critique of a number of the theoretical underpinnings of Apple's neo-Marxist approach to educational reform. These include, among others, his interpretation of Gramsci's concept of the 'commonsense' his employment of the 'decentered unity' which he identifies as an counter-hegemonic alliance among progressive forces on the left; and finally, his notion of a 'dual strategy' for building alliances between progressive forces on the left and those on the Right. Finally, …

The Death Of A Nuclear Warhead: The Environmental And Health Impacts Of Nuclear Weapons Complex Activities, Global Green Usa, Jasmine Aimaq Dr. Mar 2004

The Death Of A Nuclear Warhead: The Environmental And Health Impacts Of Nuclear Weapons Complex Activities, Global Green Usa, Jasmine Aimaq Dr.

Global Green USA

Global Green USA is committed to the elimination of all weapons of mass destruction, and urges the government to continue disarmament efforts. The disassembly of nuclear weapons must, however, be conducted in a manner that minimizes danger to human health and the environment. There are a number of risks involved in disassembly, some unique, others similar to the dangers of the production of these weapons. Even low doses of fissile and other materials used in nuclear weapons, for instance, have been shown to pose serious risks to human health and the environment. This report examines these and other dangers, taking …

Differences In Response To Hypoxia In The Three-Spined Stickleback From Lotic And Lentic Localities: Dominance And An Anaerobic Metabolite, L. U. Sneddon, J. Yerbury Mar 2004

Differences In Response To Hypoxia In The Three-Spined Stickleback From Lotic And Lentic Localities: Dominance And An Anaerobic Metabolite, L. U. Sneddon, J. Yerbury

Aquaculture Collection

Dominance hierarchies of the three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus from river and pond populations were subjected to hypoxia (20%, range±1%). Under hypoxia, the hierarchies were less stable in terms of rank position and tissue L-lactate was higher in river fish than pond fish under normoxia and hypoxia. Dominant fish gained mass under normoxia but lost mass under hypoxic conditions possibly due to them maintaining high levels of aggression.

A Critical Assessment Of Protection For Key Wildlife And Salmon Habitats Under The Proposed British Columbia Central Coast Land And Resource Management Plan, Paul C. Paquet, Chris T. Darimont, R. John Nelson, Katrina Bennett Mar 2004

A Critical Assessment Of Protection For Key Wildlife And Salmon Habitats Under The Proposed British Columbia Central Coast Land And Resource Management Plan, Paul C. Paquet, Chris T. Darimont, R. John Nelson, Katrina Bennett

Habitat Assessment and Management Collection

The Central Coast Land and Resource Management Plan (CCLRMP) table recently declared a consensus1 on proposed protected areas for British Columbia’s Central Coast. This region is recognized for its globally rare and largely intact mainland and island ecosystems and land use decisions should reflect this importance. We evaluated the efficacy of this proposal using a spatial assessment of habitat. We focus on protected areas in the context of the overall CCLRMP. We examined the level of protection provided by the CCLRMP in three key coastal habitats: deer winter range, wolf reproductive habitat, and salmon reproductive and rearing habitat. Assessment of …
