Mistaking Marriage For Social Policy, Vivian E. Hamilton Apr 2004

Mistaking Marriage For Social Policy, Vivian E. Hamilton

Faculty Publications

This Article examines the role of marriage in society, focusing on the state's use of marriage as a proxy for desirable outcomes in social policy. Its analytical point of departure is the normative vision of modern marriage embraced by many of its proponents. From there, the idealized marriage is analyzed, not as a monolithic, opaque institution, but as one whose functional components may be identified and examined. The Article identifies the following as the primary functions of the normative marital family: expression; companionship; sex/procreation; caretaking; and economic support or redistribution. Analyzing the roles in society of each of these functions, …

A Comparison Of Anuran Species Richness Between Primary And Secondary Forest In São Francisco Do Pará, Michael Reichert Apr 2004

A Comparison Of Anuran Species Richness Between Primary And Secondary Forest In São Francisco Do Pará, Michael Reichert

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Deforestation in the Amazon has become a serious conservation issue. The process of destruction of primary forest results in the creation of secondary forest that differs from primary forest in a number of important ways. Anurans (frogs and toads) are one group that may be affected by the loss of primary forest and creation of secondary forest areas, and are an important focus for conservation efforts. Previous studies on anuran reactions to loss of primary forest have been few and inconclusive. This study examined anuran species richness in an area of primary and secondary forest in order to determine whether …

A Comparison Of Tone Burst Auditory Brainstem Response (Abr) Latencies Elicited With And Without Notched Noise Masking, Rachele M. Orsini Apr 2004

A Comparison Of Tone Burst Auditory Brainstem Response (Abr) Latencies Elicited With And Without Notched Noise Masking, Rachele M. Orsini

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Objective: The air conduction click is currently the most widespread stimulus used to estimate the pure tone audiogram as part of auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing. The click is characterized by its broad spectral content and rapid onset, which may not make it the best choice for frequency specificity. An alternative stimulus is a short duration tone burst stimuli with notched noise masking. When obtaining an ABR using standard unmasked tone bursts, the brief stimulus onset may cause spectral splatter producing response contributions from unwanted regions of the cochlea; thus reducing the frequency specificity of the ABR. Notched noise masking …

Comparative Analysis Of Serologic Assays For The Detection Of Antibodies To Eastern Equine Encephalomyelitis Virus In Sentinel Chickens, Christy L. Voakes Apr 2004

Comparative Analysis Of Serologic Assays For The Detection Of Antibodies To Eastern Equine Encephalomyelitis Virus In Sentinel Chickens, Christy L. Voakes

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Florida's mild climate supports year round enzootic transmission of arthropod-borne (arbo) viruses, such as St. Louis Encephalitis virus (SLEV), West Nile virus (WNV), and Eastern Equine Encephalomyelitis virus (EEEV). First isolated in 1960 from two Florida blue jays, Highlands J virus (HJV) is endemic to the state and vectored by the same mosquitoes as EEEV (Henderson et al, 1962). EEEV and HJV are both alphaviruses, but HJV is not pathogenic to humans, occasionally causes encephalitis in horses, and is a recognized pathogen in some bird species (turkeys, emus, etc) (Cilnis et al, 1996).

The Florida Sentinel Chicken Arboviral Surveillance …

Nutrient Concentrations In Manure Storage Facilities, John Harrison, Dallen Smith

All Current Publications

The objective of this fact sheet is to help producers understand the nutrient loss and retention characteristics of different types of manure storage. The concentration of nutrients in manure storage facilities is important for planning land application activities. Nutrient concentration is usually the critical factor in determining the amount of manure to be spread per acre of land. Manure systems similar in type and management may have characteristically similar concentrations of manure nutrients.

Commons Ignorance: The Failure Of Environmental Law To Produce Needed Information On Health And The Environment, Wendy E. Wagner Apr 2004

Commons Ignorance: The Failure Of Environmental Law To Produce Needed Information On Health And The Environment, Wendy E. Wagner

Duke Law Journal

One of the most significant problems facing environmental law is the dearth of scientific information available to assess the impact of industrial activities on public health and the environment. After documenting the significant gaps in existing information, this Article argues that existing laws both exacerbate and perpetuate this problem. By failing to require actors to assess the potential harm from their activities, and by penalizing them with additional regulation when they do, existing laws fail to counteract actors' natural inclination to remain silent about the harms that they might be causing. Both theory and practice confirm that when the stakes …

The Prophylactic Remedy: Normative Principles And Definitional Parameters Of Broad Injunctive Relief, Tracy A. Thomas Apr 2004

The Prophylactic Remedy: Normative Principles And Definitional Parameters Of Broad Injunctive Relief, Tracy A. Thomas

Akron Law Faculty Publications

This article is the first complete normative and descriptive treatment of the modern civil rights remedy -- the prophylactic injunction. The prophylactic remedy is a public law injunction that uniquely restricts legal conduct that is affiliated with, but distinct from, the illegal wrong. The United States Supreme Court has utilized prophylactic remedies for over forty years, and has used the prophylactic paradigm to shape its jurisprudence on Section 5 of the Fourteenth Amendment. Prophylaxis, however, remains an ambiguous concept in the eyes of most scholars and lawyers. This article attempts to fill the academic void by exploring the doctrinal and …

Models, Composability, And Validity, Eric Werner Weisel Apr 2004

Models, Composability, And Validity, Eric Werner Weisel

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Composability is the capability to select and assemble simulation components in various combinations into simulation systems to satisfy specific user requirements. The defining characteristic of composability is the ability to combine and recombine components into different simulation systems for different purposes. The ability to compose simulation systems from repositories of reusable components has been a highly sought after goal among modeling and simulation developers. The expected benefits of robust, general composability include reduced simulation development cost and time, increased validity and reliability of simulation results, and increased involvement of simulation users in the process. Consequently, composability is an active research …

Prediction Of Rigid Body Aircraft Acceleration Response Due To Atmospheric Disturbances, Billy Keith Buck Apr 2004

Prediction Of Rigid Body Aircraft Acceleration Response Due To Atmospheric Disturbances, Billy Keith Buck

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Methodology to predict aircraft transient motion resulting from flight within an unsteady atmospheric environment, coupled with validation using flight test data is proposed. A family of five linear dynamic models is developed for describing the normal acceleration throughout an aircraft cabin due to vertical gust excitation. The five models successively build upon each other by incorporating higher fidelity gust penetration effects while simultaneously maintaining a unified modeling framework. Six wind fields reconstructed from flight test data are used to excite the vehicle models. Simulation responses are compared with forward, center, and aft accelerometer response data recorded during the test. Each …

The Effects Of Ankle Taping And Spatting On The Reaction Times Of The Supporting Musculature Of The Ankle Before And After Exercise In Healthy And Functionally Unstable Ankles, Jennifer I. Mckenzie Apr 2004

The Effects Of Ankle Taping And Spatting On The Reaction Times Of The Supporting Musculature Of The Ankle Before And After Exercise In Healthy And Functionally Unstable Ankles, Jennifer I. Mckenzie

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations

Ankle taping is a common practice in the athletic training room, but there is minimal evidence to support its effectiveness in enhancing muscle activation. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of ankle taping on muscle activation following sudden inversion in functionally unstable and healthy ankles before and after exercise. Fourteen recreational athletes with a unilateral functionally unstable ankle volunteered to participate. Surface EMG electrodes were placed on the peroneals and anterior tibialis muscles of both extremities. Each subject received four treatment conditions; ankle taping, ankle taping with spatting, spatting, and no tape in a randomly assigned, …
