Genomically Intact Endogenous Feline Leukemia Viruses Of Recent Origin, Alfred L. Roca, Jill Pecon-Slattery, Stephen J. O'Brien

Biology Faculty Articles

We isolated and sequenced two complete endogenous feline leukemia viruses (enFeLVs), designated enFeLV-AGTT and enFeLV-GGAG. In enFeLV-AGTT, the open reading frames are reminiscent of a functioning FeLV genome, and the 5′ and 3′ long terminal repeat sequences are identical. Neither endogenous provirus is genetically fixed in cats but polymorphic, with 8.9 and 15.2% prevalence for enFeLV-AGTT and enFeLV-GGAG, respectively, among a survey of domestic cats. Neither provirus was found in the genomes of related species of the Felis genus, previously shown to harbor enFeLVs. The absence of mutational divergence, polymorphic incidence in cats, and absence in related species suggest that …

Only In Story A World : Atheistic Metanarrative In Leguin, Pullman And Wolfe, Samuel N. Keyes Apr 2004

Only In Story A World : Atheistic Metanarrative In Leguin, Pullman And Wolfe, Samuel N. Keyes

Honors Theses

Ursula K. Le Guin, Philip Pullman, and Gene Wolfe, despite their apparent ideological as well as stylistic differences, all profoundly question the way modernity has divided knowledge, posing serious challenges to contemporary distinctions between religion, science and magic. Moreover, they share a common concern for the power of narrative to accomplish this critique.

In each of their multivolume fantasies, the differences between the categories of science and religion become meaningless. After such a deconstruction, the possibility of nihilism looms unless a new system of meaning surfaces. The move away from discrete areas of science and religion, therefore, in these works …

Adult Male Emigration And A Female-Based Social Organization In Swift Foxes, Vulpes Velox, Jan F. Kamler, Warren B. Ballard, Eric M. Gese, Robert L. Harrison, Seija Karki, Kevin Mote Apr 2004

Adult Male Emigration And A Female-Based Social Organization In Swift Foxes, Vulpes Velox, Jan F. Kamler, Warren B. Ballard, Eric M. Gese, Robert L. Harrison, Seija Karki, Kevin Mote

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Members of the family Canidae are distinguished from other carnivore families by pair bonding and male care of the young. Because of the importance of food provisioning and territorial defiance by males, social structure among canids is shared or even dominated by males. However, small, insectivorous species of canids show little male parental care, although whether social structure differs from other canids is unknown. We combined data from three independent research projects on a small canid, the swift fox, to help elucidate the social organization of this species. Based on data on movements of 35 adult mated pairs and the …

When Male Becomes Female And Female Becomes Male In Mande., Kassim Kone Apr 2004

When Male Becomes Female And Female Becomes Male In Mande., Kassim Kone

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

This paper argues that an ideology of masculinity among the Bamana is based on the belief of supremacy of the male biological heritage over the female heritage in procreation. The statuses and roles of Bamana men and women remain culturally and contextually fluid however. Father to his own children, a man is also the male mother to his sister’s child. On the opposite, the paternal aunt is the female father to her brother’s child. A clear picture of the gender relations requires an understanding of women’s roles and their power and authority in their families of orientation. Similarly, male domination …

At The Crossroads: Counterproliferation And National Security Strategy, Center For Counterproliferation Research Apr 2004

At The Crossroads: Counterproliferation And National Security Strategy, Center For Counterproliferation Research

Books and Book Chapters

The continued proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) represents the most serious threat to U.S. national security and an enormous challenge for the entire international community. In the hands of rogue states, failing states, or substate terrorist groups, these weapons threaten not only U.S. forces, friends, and allies abroad, but also the U.S. homeland. Rogue states armed with WMD threaten the security of regions that are vital to the United States and raise the costs and risks of U.S. military operations intended to protect those interests. Forming international coalitions to defend shared interests is also more difficult in the …

National Pollution Discharge Elimination System Storm Water Permits Effects In Urban Planning And Building, Robin T. Lee Apr 2004

National Pollution Discharge Elimination System Storm Water Permits Effects In Urban Planning And Building, Robin T. Lee

Master's Projects

The purpose of this paper is to introduce the concept of reducing impervious surface coverage by using compact development. Compact development can be used to meet the pollution reduction requirements of the Clean Water Act as implemented through the National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) storm water discharge permitting process. Various court cases and laws have been cited to give background to development of the NPDES permit. Information has been garnered through the Internet and published resources.

Insights to the NPDES storm water permitting process were gathered by attending meetings of the State of California Regional Water Quality Control Board …

The Observed Covariance Between Ecosystem Carbon Exchange And Atmospheric Boundary Layer Dynamics At A Site In Northern Wisconsin, Chuixiang Yi, Kenneth J. Davis, Peter S. Bakwin, A. Scott Denning, Nina Zhang, Ankur Desai, John C. Lin, Christoph Gerbig Apr 2004

The Observed Covariance Between Ecosystem Carbon Exchange And Atmospheric Boundary Layer Dynamics At A Site In Northern Wisconsin, Chuixiang Yi, Kenneth J. Davis, Peter S. Bakwin, A. Scott Denning, Nina Zhang, Ankur Desai, John C. Lin, Christoph Gerbig

Publications and Research

Ecosystem CO2 exchange and atmosphere boundary layer (ABL) mixing are correlated diurnally and seasonally as they are both driven by solar insulation. Tracer transport models predict that these covariance signals produce a meridional gradient of annual mean CO2 concentration in the marine boundary layer that is half as strong as the signal produced by fossil fuel emissions. This rectifier effect is simulated by most global tracer transport models. However, observations to constrain the strength of these covariance signals in nature are lacking. We investigate the covariance between ecosystem carbon dioxide exchange and ABL dynamics by comparing one widely …

Embryonic Responses To Variation In Oviductal Oxygen In The Lizard Sceloporus Undulatus From New Jersey And South Carolina, Usa, Scott L. Parker, Robin M. Andrews, Tom Mathies Apr 2004

Embryonic Responses To Variation In Oviductal Oxygen In The Lizard Sceloporus Undulatus From New Jersey And South Carolina, Usa, Scott L. Parker, Robin M. Andrews, Tom Mathies

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Viviparity in reptiles is hypothesized to evolve in cold climates at high latitudes and high elevations through selection for progressively longer periods of egg retention. Oxygen consumption of embryos increases during development and therefore longer periods of egg retention should be associated with maternal or embryonic features that enhance embryonic oxygen availability. We tested the hypotheses that embryos of the oviparous lizard Sceloporus undulatus from a high-latitude population in New Jersey are oviposited at more advanced developmental stages and have a higher growth rate at low oxygen partial pressures (pO2) than embryos from a low-latitude population …

"Power Over This Unfortunate Race": Race, Politics And Indian Law In United States V. Rogers, Bethany R. Berger

William & Mary Law Review

"[F]rom the very moment the general government came into existence to this time, it has exercised its power over this unfortunate race in the spirit of humanity and justice, and has endeavoured by every means in its power to enlighten their minds and increase their comforts, and to save them if possible from the consequences of their own vices."

In 1846, in United States v. Rogers, the Supreme Court blithely announced the above vision of the history of Indian-United States relations. The first part of the quote describes Indian people as a race and an inferior one; the second part …

Gaps, Inexperience, Inconsistencies, And Overlaps: Crisis In The Regulation Of Genetically Modified Plants And Animals, Gregory N. Mandel Apr 2004

Gaps, Inexperience, Inconsistencies, And Overlaps: Crisis In The Regulation Of Genetically Modified Plants And Animals, Gregory N. Mandel

William & Mary Law Review

The regulation of genetically modified products pursuant to statutes enacted decades prior to the advent of biotechnology has created a regulatory system that is passive rather than proactive about risks, has difficulty adapting to biotechnology advances, and is highly fractured and inefficient-transgenic plants and animals are governed by at least twelve different statutes and five different agencies or services. The deficiencies resulting from this piecemeal approach to regulation unnecessarily expose society and the environment to adverse risks of biotechnology and introduce numerous inefficiencies into the regulatory system. These risks and inefficiencies include gaps in regulation, duplicative and inconsistent regulation, unnecessary …

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

This paper details one faculty members approach to developing a prototype module for a computer based instruction (CBI) course in foundational neuroscience for physical therapy students. The process was based on the generic instructional systems design model, ADDIE. ADDIE is an acronym for Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. Each step has an outcome that feeds the subsequent step or results in modification of the prior step in order to reach the desired outcome. The analysis section summarizes the state of the global academic environment in health professions education and the environment at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) …

Controlled Release Systems For Non-Viral Vectors, Angela K. Pannier, Lonnie D. Shea Apr 2004

Controlled Release Systems For Non-Viral Vectors, Angela K. Pannier, Lonnie D. Shea

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Adapting controlled release technologies to the delivery of non-viral vectors has the potential to overcome barriers that limit gene therapy. Controlled release systems can enhance gene delivery and increase the extent and duration of transgene expression relative to more traditional delivery methods. Delivery vehicles for controlled release are fabricated from natural and synthetic polymers, which function either by releasing the vector into the local tissue environment or by maintaining the vector at the polymer surface. Vector release or binding is regulated by the effective affinity of the vector for the polymer, which depends upon the strength of molecular interactions. These …

Life Cycle And Paratenesis Of American Gordiids (Nematomorpha: Gordiida), Ben Hanelt, John J. Janovy Jr. Apr 2004

Life Cycle And Paratenesis Of American Gordiids (Nematomorpha: Gordiida), Ben Hanelt, John J. Janovy Jr.

John J. Janovy, Jr. Publications

To complete their life cycle, gordiids must make a transition from aquatic to terrestrial environments. However, epibenthic aquatic larvae and their terrestrial definitive hosts do not overlap in habitat. This has led many investigators to suggest that infections are acquired through the ingestion of insects, which become infected as aquatic larvae with gordiid cysts and subsequently carry gordiids to land. This proposed life cycle was experimentally tested using three common American species of gordiids: Gordius robustus, Paragordius varius, and Chordodes morgani. Cysts of all three species survived the metamorphosis of Tanytarsus sp., a midge. Subsequent infection trials of …

In Explorers' Footsteps: You Can Find Nearly All The Birds Documented By Lewis And Clark In Great Refuges On The Great Plains, Paul A. Johnsgard

Papers in Ornithology

Two hundred years ago this May, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, together with the three dozen army volunteers and hired hunter-interpreters who made up the Corps of Discovery, departed their winter camp at the mouth of the Missouri River, north of St. Louis, Missouri, and set out to make history. President Thomas Jefferson had charged them with the monumental task of exploring the unknown lands of the Louisiana Territory, purchased from France the year before, and trying to find a navigable route to the Pacific Ocean via the Missouri River. The explorers were also asked to make extensive geological, geographic, …

Papers in Ecology

There are few well-documented, general ecological principles that can be applied to pressing environmental issues. When they discuss them at all, ecologists often disagree about the relative importance of different aspects of the science’s original and still important issues. It may be that the sum of ecological science is not open to universal statements because of the wide range of organizational, spatial, and temporal phenomena, as well as the sheer number of possible interactions. We believe, however, that the search for general principles has been inadequate to establish the extent to which generalities are possible. We suggest that ecologists may need to …
