A Survey Of Evidence For Feasting In Mycenaean Society, James C. Wright Apr 2004

A Survey Of Evidence For Feasting In Mycenaean Society, James C. Wright

Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology Faculty Research and Scholarship

The study of feasting on the Greek mainland during the Middle and Late Bronze Age provides insights into the nature of Mycenaean society. Grave goods demonstrate changes in feasting and drinking practices and their importance in the formation of an elite identity. Cooking, serving, and drinking vessels are also recorded in Linear B documents. Feasting scenes appear in the frescoes of Crete and the islands, and the Mycenaeans adapt this tradition for representation in their palaces. Feasting iconography is also found in vase painting, particularly in examples of the Pictorial Style. Mycenaean feasting is an expression of the hierarchical sociopolitical …

Implications Of Biblical Principles Of Rhythm And Rest For Individual And Organizational Practices, Margaret Diddams, Lisa Surdyk, Denise Daniels, Jeff B. Van Duzer

SPU Works

The information technology economy with its endless 24/7 workdays has eroded the normative cycle of work and rest, and as a result, many Americans are experiencing a profound and increasing sense of time pressure. By integrating biblical passages relating to Sabbath observance with psychological and organizational empirical literature, Diddams et al seek describe the principles of rest, reflection, and relationships underlying biblical notions of rhythm; identify their associated influence on psychological wellness; and discuss how organizations can embrace a rhythmic, Sabbath culture.

PREP Reports & Publications

The Department of Environmental Services (DES) received funding from the New Hampshire Estuaries Project (NHEP) to conduct monitoring activities in 2004. The activities described in this report were led by the DES Watershed Assistance Section and involved water monitoring in tidal tributaries. These monitoring activities were completed with the overall purpose of improving the understanding of water quality trends. The Department of Environmental Services completed all tasks as planned. This report includes the sample collection information, field data, and laboratory data. Data summaries and interpretations will come at a later time in other DES and NHEP publications.

Women's and Gender Studies Program: Information and Materials

Feminism provides a critical analysis of gender relations, the conditions that construct them, how we think about them, and how they are experienced by real people in their material lives. It should also help us develop strategies to intervene and take action to change those conditions across different perspectives. No Limits 2004, "Imagining Change: Women as Agents of Social Justice," enacted that definition of feminism. The conference showcased the excellent creativity and research of Women's Studies students and the collaborative energy and dedication of the students to move from academic work to action in the university and in the community.

MUSC Faculty Journal Articles

Heterozygous mutations of the cardiac transcription factor Nkx2-5 cause atrioventricular conduction defects in humans by unknown mechanisms. We show in KO mice that the number of cells in the cardiac conduction system is directly related to Nkx2-5 gene dosage. Null mutant embryos appear to lack the primordium of the atrioventricular node. In Nkx2-5 haploinsufficiency, the conduction system has half the normal number of cells. In addition, an entire population of connexin40-/connexin45+ cells is missing in the atrioventricular node of Nkx2-5 heterozygous KO mice. Specific functional defects associated with Nkx2-5 loss of function can be attributed to hypoplastic development of the …

A North Dakota Geology Field Trip Primer, Joseph H. Hartman Apr 2004

A North Dakota Geology Field Trip Primer, Joseph H. Hartman

Geology and Geological Engineering Faculty Publications

The rocks containing vertebrate fossils in North Dakota represent an important archive of biological and geological events that took place from around 80 million years ago to the present (Figure 1). Although the record is not complete through this interval of time, significant exposures provide important sections of Earth’s geologic history (Figure 2). We continue to understand better how seas moved back and forth across North Dakota and the life that persisted in these seas and adjacent estuaries. The terrestrial habitats and river drainages that are recorded in nonmarine strata contain important insights into the patterns of dinosaur diversity up …

Personality Theory And Pre-Mortal Life, Neil O. Annandale

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Interest in the study of psychology and religion has increased in recent years. Leading researchers in this field have specified areas in need of further investigation, one of which is the development of personality theory from a theistic perspective. This article highlights the significance of a doctrine unique to LDS theology"pre-mortal life"and its potential contribution to personality theory. Implications of such a far-reaching view of personality for research and practice in counseling and psychotherapy are also presented.
