Investigation And Calculation Of Dose Coefficients For Radionuclides Produced In A Spallation Neutron Source Using The Ensdf And Nubase Nuclear Databases, Yayun Song
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Dose coefficients are useful for risk assessment during the design and siting of accelerator-driven nuclear facilities including the Spallation Neutron Source. There are seventy-two radionuclides with half-lives equal to or greater than one minute that will be produced by the spallation of a mercury target for which no published dose coefficients exist. Out of these seventy-two, twenty-four currently have conflicting published nuclear data in the Evaluated Nuclear Structure Data Files (ENSDF) and the NUBASE data files. In this research these twenty-four radionuclides have been studied. Because of missing ENSDF records, internal and external dose coefficients were determined for only six …
Development And Characterization Of Eukaryotic Biomimetic Liposomes, Bradley Jay Taylor
Development And Characterization Of Eukaryotic Biomimetic Liposomes, Bradley Jay Taylor
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study developed and characterized phospholipid vesicles, or liposomes, that mimic cell surfaces. Microemulsified liposomes contained biotinylated phosphatidylethanolamine, allowing them to be immobilized to avidin-coated glass. Laminin (LN), glycosphingolipids (GMl and GM3), and Escherichia coli's mechanosensitive channel of large conductance (EcoMscL) were embedded into liposome membranes. It was determined whether these embedded molecules exhibited their physiological roles of adhesion, cell recognition, and mechanosensation, respectively. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) was employed to examine the interaction of fluorescently probed proteins, toxins, and bacteria with the immobilized microemulsified liposomes. Capture of individual and simultaneous multiple species of bacteria by GMl, GM3, …

Decentralized Control For Uav Path Planning And Task Allocation, Matthew C. Lechliter
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The effort of this research is to move toward enabling Unmanned Air Vehicles to fly in autonomous formations with intelligent mission planning capabilities. In particular, UAVs will be able to autonomously perform path planning and task allocation. During missions, the UAVs must be able to avoid threats and no-fly zones while still reaching their target optimally in time.;A path planning and task allocation approach was first developed that treats the problem as a Multi-dimensional, Multiple-Choice Knapsack Problem. Paths are selected and task assigned while minimizing the UAV team's overall mission cost. Next, a SIMULINK-based centralized simulation environment was created. This …
Development Of Immobilized Metal Affinity Chromatography For The Isolation And Selective Enrichment Of Phosphopeptides, Erica Sims Jackson
Development Of Immobilized Metal Affinity Chromatography For The Isolation And Selective Enrichment Of Phosphopeptides, Erica Sims Jackson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Protein structure and function are often regulated by covalent modifications to the protein. One of the most important of these modifications is phosphorylation, which can control many cellular processes. The sites of phosphorylation must be determined to fully understand the protein's function and regulatory events, which can be challenging because of the low stoichiometry of the phosphorylated regulatory proteins.;Several strategies for enrichment of phosphopeptides prior to analysis have been developed, however, Immobilized Metal Affinity Chromatography (IMAC) is the most widely used method. Online IMAC-ESI-MS has been developed with ammonium hydroxide as the elutor. Gradient elution from the IMAC column demonstrates …
Grandparental Visitation: Its Evolution In New York State, Elliott Scheinberg
Grandparental Visitation: Its Evolution In New York State, Elliott Scheinberg
Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal
The article examines the legal framework governing grandparental visitation rights, emphasizing the tension between statutory provisions granting grandparents standing to seek visitation and the courts' reliance on the "best interests of the child" standard. It highlights how judicial decisions have evolved to balance grandparental rights with parental autonomy, particularly in cases involving deceased parents or strained family relationships. The analysis underscores the importance of case-by-case evaluations and the limited scope of grandparental rights, especially when adoption or significant changes in family circumstances are involved.
Nobody's Ever Asked Me That Before: Middle School Students Talk About Motivation To Achieve In School Contexts, Erika Daniels Edd
Nobody's Ever Asked Me That Before: Middle School Students Talk About Motivation To Achieve In School Contexts, Erika Daniels Edd
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore whether or not a connection exists between students' school contexts and their academic and social choices by listening to the voices of first year middle school students. The intent of this study was to provide teachers with a way to reconceptualize adolescents as learners. Research suggests that there are two distinct approaches to the study of motivation. Some researchers believe that motivation can be externally enacted through exams, assessments, and other accountability measures. Other researchers believe that motivation is internally generated through the relationships students build, through their beliefs about learning, and …

A Church Crisis: A Rhetorical Criticism Of Communication Arguments From Proponents Of Both Sides Of The Homosexual Movement In The Christian Church, Garland Brent Wallace
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The increased levels of homosexual discussion in mainstream media culture have aroused opinion diversity in both secular and religious circles. The case of Bishop Gene Robinson has brought the issue of homosexuality in the priesthood to the forefront. However, the main issue does not rest on the issue of homosexuality but rather on the inspiration, validity, and authority of the Bible as scripture. After the evaluation of two pieces of rhetoric, including an interview given by Bishop Gene Robinson on a local radio broadcast and a speech given by B. L. Mauser concerning homosexuality as sin, Kenneth Burke's pentad will …

Computational Scattering Models For Elastic And Electromagnetic Waves In Particulate Media, Timothy Edwin Doyle
Computational Scattering Models For Elastic And Electromagnetic Waves In Particulate Media, Timothy Edwin Doyle
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Numerical models were developed to simulate the propagation of elastic and electromagnetic waves in an arbitrary, dense dispersion of spherical particles. The scattering interactions were modeled with vector multipole fields using pure-orbital vector spherical harmonics, and solved using the full vector form of the boundary conditions. Multiple scattering was simulated by translating the scattered wave fields from one particle to another with the use of translational addition theorems, summing the multiple-scattering contributions, and recalculating the scattering in an iterative fashion to a convergent solution. The addition theorems were rederived in this work using an integral method, and were shown to …

Space Congress® Proceedings
Human exploration beyond low Earth orbit will require terrestrial life to survive and ultimately flourish in environments fundamentally different to those in which it has evolved. The effects of deep space and conditions on the surface of other planets must be studied to understand and reduce the risks to explorers, provide bioregenerative life support, and make full use of the broad research opportunities and scientific benefits offered by such unique environments. Though much is already known about biological adaptations to the space environment, key changes in terrestrial life may only be revealed over complete life cycles and across multiple generations …

Paper Session Ii-B - Progress Toward Electrostatic Radiation Shielding Of Interplanetary Spacecraft, Philip T. Metzger, Robert C. Youngquist, John E. Lane
Space Congress® Proceedings
Particle radiation remains a significant obstacle to human exploration of space. Passive (materials-based) shielding technology has made significant progress but continues to be a costly in-flight option due to the required mass. Magnetic shielding has not come of age because it requires superconducting coils that are not only heavier than passive shields but contain single-point failure mechanisms and remain a technological challenge. Electrostatic shielding has been largely rejected because repulsion of the protons would attract a cloud of electrons, neutralizing the shield, whereas concentric shells of shielding to repel both electrons and protons would be heavy and would require large …

Paper Session Ii-B - Bioregenerative Life Support Systems For Mars Missions, John C. Sager, Raymond M. Wheeler
Space Congress® Proceedings
Human space travel to Mars will require traveling further and staying longer in space than ever before. The traditional approach of stowing life support consumables (i.e., food, 0 2, and clean water) will be transport dependent and too costly, and regenerative technologies will be required. One approach would involve the use of bi ore generative life support systems, where plants would produce food, clean water, and 02 while removing C02, and microbial systems would process liquid and solid wastes. These systems might provide a small fraction (e.g., 5-25%) oflife support needs for early missions, but increase as surface outposts expand. …
