This report summarizes the first year of an effort to develop a more complete understanding of the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics that drive the ecological processes of Waldo Lake. Modern limnology recognizes the importance of watershed processes as well as in- lake processes in lake ecosystem functioning. Therefore, the approach included consideration of watershed hydrology and forcing functions that determine hydrodynamics of the system as well physical and chemical factors that may be important in regulating primary production in the lake. Data collected since 1998 was summarized and bathymetry of the basin was mapped using state-of-the-art digital depth sounding …
The Ability To Taste 6-N-Propylthiouracil (Prop) And Its Relation To A Parent's Emotional Investment In The Infant, Deann Jones
The Ability To Taste 6-N-Propylthiouracil (Prop) And Its Relation To A Parent's Emotional Investment In The Infant, Deann Jones
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Research on parenting is increasingly being studied from a biological perspective. An understanding of the biological mechanisms leading to individual differences in maternal behaviors can help direct research toward more focused intervention resulting in closer mother-infant attachment relationships, and therefore, positive child outcomes. This research was a preliminary study that tested mothers' ability to taste a harmless chemical, 6-n-propylthiouracil (PROP), in relation to their responses to a questionnaire about the emotional investment they experience towards their infant. Although research attempting to relate these two variables together has not been carried out before, individual studies show potential links between these two. …

EPA is developing water qulaity criteria for estuaries that require knowledge of both total nitrogen and light availability (measured as photsynthetically active radiation, PAR). Through the National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) System-Wide Monitoring Program (SWMP), inorganic nutrient concentrations, chlorophyll-a concetration, and a number of hydrographic and water quality parameters are sampled on a monthly basis at 7 sites in the Great Bay system. In addition, these same parameters, as well as bacteria concentrations, are measured at a number of sites in Great Bay and Hampton Harbor through the National Coastal Assessment (NCA) funded through the EPA. This project takes advantage …
Bulk Polymerization And Structure-Property Relationship Of Medical Grade Polyurethane, Mariam Nasser Al-Saedi
Bulk Polymerization And Structure-Property Relationship Of Medical Grade Polyurethane, Mariam Nasser Al-Saedi
Theses
Polyurethanes as biomaterials have been used in the augmentation and repair of the human body with great success. The choice of material for a particular application often hinges on the body's response to the polymer, the mechanical and thermal properties of the polymer and the stoichiometric ratio of active ingredients used in the synthesis.
A large number of polyurethanes used in medical applications are polyester-based and cannot be used in long-term implant applications because they are very susceptible to hydrolysis. Other medical-grade polyurethanes, which are suitable for implants are polyether-based which might to some extent, suffer from environmental stress cracking …
Visual Predictors Of Relapse In The Artwork Of Adult Substance Abusers, Danica Aimeè Vallery
Visual Predictors Of Relapse In The Artwork Of Adult Substance Abusers, Danica Aimeè Vallery
EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations
This study hypothesized that five visual predictors of relapse previously found statistically significant by Dickman, Dunn and Wolf (1996) and Williar (2002), in the artwork of adult substance abusers, would again be found statistically significant predictors of relapse, in the artwork of the group identified as a high risk for relapse in Williar’s study. The body of artwork studied included twenty-two previously acquired, studied, and archived drawings (Williar, 2002), created by 22 chemically dependent adults. All subjects completed the assessment of warning signs for relapse (AWARE)(Harris & Miller, 2000) and were grouped as either high or low risk for relapse …

Neuroscience: Its Relevance To Art Therapy And Art Therapy Education, Patrick Oates
EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations
The development of contemporary neuroscience techniques has provided professionals in mental health fields with insight into the human brain and its functions. Literature searches revealed that there is very little research being conducted or existing literature that discusses the physiological response in the brain to the art therapy process. A more comprehensive understanding of the brain’s response to making art could enhance art therapists’ capacity to provide the most suitable treatment to meet the clients’ needs. This study was designed to explore the significance of neuroscience in art therapy, and art therapy education.
A questionnaire was emailed to 49 program …
Processing And Optimization Of Natural Fiber Reinforced Composites Using Date Palm Fibers, Khalifa Musabbeh Suwaidan Hamad Al-Kaabi
Processing And Optimization Of Natural Fiber Reinforced Composites Using Date Palm Fibers, Khalifa Musabbeh Suwaidan Hamad Al-Kaabi
Theses
During the last twenty years, ecological concerns have resulted in a renewed interest in natural materials. Composite materials usually depend on using man-made fibers as the reinforcing element. The possibility of using natural fibers instead of synthetic fibers is gaining acceptance among users. This work aims to investigate the possibility of extracting natural fibers from date palm trees to be used as reinforcement with polymeric materials. The objective was achieved by characterizing fibers through different chemical, physical and mechanical tests and using different treatment methods in order to modify the fiber properties. Date Palm Fibers (DPF) exhibit a cylindrical shape …
Genetic Population Structure Of The Plains Spadefoot Toad (Scaphiopus (Spea) Bombifrons) On The Northern Plains, Todd Becker
Genetic Population Structure Of The Plains Spadefoot Toad (Scaphiopus (Spea) Bombifrons) On The Northern Plains, Todd Becker
Theses and Dissertations
In this study, I examined genetic population structure in spadefoot toads (Scaphiopus bombifrons) living in western North Dakota. Spadefoct toads have a very unique life history among amphibians. They are generally limited to being active only during nocturnal wet periods. Because of this, and other factors such as philopatry, it is expected that migration and dispersal rates should be relatively low. I hypothesize that this low rate of movement, along with fairly short dispersal distances when individuals do move, should lead to the structuring of genetic variation at relatively fine scales.
Five microsatellite loci were used to examine population structure …

Quilting Between The Revivals: The Cultural Context Of Quilting, 1945--1970, Colleen Rose Hall-Patton
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Quilting is a reflection of women's roles in the family. What happened to quilting between 1940 and 1970 is important to examine because it tells us much about the transformation of women from producers to consumers. In the twentieth century, quilts were increasingly replaced by mass produced blankets. While quilting literature has argued that quilting, for all practical purposes, ceased between 1940 and 1970, women resisted the change to consumerism by continuing to produce quilts and negotiating their use of mass production; The portrayal of quilting in magazines shifted from an integral role as thrifty and decorative to being almost …

Historical Perspectives Current Operation And Future Projections For Temple Baptist College, Layne Carter
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This dissertation study will propose to present the rich historical past of Temple Baptist College, as well as the current operations and future projections. The trend in current academia is to move away from biblical principles and established moral standards. Many Christian schools too, have succumbed to the pressure of the age. This dissertation was written not merely to record the history of Temple Baptist College (which was never done before) but also to provide standards and guidance to other small Christian institutions. The information recorded in this dissertation was collected after researching archived records and minutes of several Board …

Recent studies combining an atmospheric-pressure plasma source (inductively coupled plasma or microwave induced plasma) with cavity ringdown spectroscopy (plasma-CRDS) have indicated significant promise for ultra-sensitive elemental measurements. Initial plasma-CRDS efforts employed an inductively coupled plasma as the atomization source and a pulsed laser system as the light source. In an effort to improve the portability and reduce the cost of the system for application purposes, we have modified our approach to include a compact microwave induced plasma and a continuous wave diode laser. A technique for controlling the coupling of the continuous wave laser to the ringdown cavity has been …

A temperate, type IV pilus-dependent, double-stranded DNA bacteriophage named DMS3 was isolated from a clinical strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. A clear-plaque variant of this bacteriophage was isolated. DMS3 is capable of mediating generalized transduction within and between P. aeruginosa strains PA14 and PAO1, thus providing a useful tool for the genetic analysis of P. aeruginosa.
Genetic Analysis Of Acetone Carboxylase In Azotobacter Vinelandii, Jessica Gardner
Genetic Analysis Of Acetone Carboxylase In Azotobacter Vinelandii, Jessica Gardner
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Acetone carboxylase, an inducible multimeric enzyme found in several bacteria, catalyzes the carboxylation of acetone to produce acetoacetate. This is an important reaction for the bacteria because, upon addition of coenzyme A, the acetoacetate can be converted to acetyl-CoA, a common metabolic intermediate. Azotobacter vinelandii, one of the bacteria that produces acetone carboxylase, has two different genes encoding this enzyme. We knocked out the first of these by disrupting it with a kanamycin cassette to help us understand the function of the second gene. Knocking out the gene will also make possible the use of site-directed mutagenesis to further study …
Magnesium Intake And Its Relationship With Type 2 Diabetes, Caralee Wilcock
Magnesium Intake And Its Relationship With Type 2 Diabetes, Caralee Wilcock
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Magnesium is an alkaline earth metal and is the second most abundant cation in the human body. Magnesium plays important roles in the structure and the function of the human body; it is involved in more than 300 essential metabolic reactions in the body. Magnesium has been implicated in the prevention and treatment of many diseases including diabetes. Magnesium depletion is commonly associated with both insulin dependent and non-insulin dependent diabetes. A significant number, (between 25% and 39%) of diabetics have been shown to have decreased serum levels of magnesium. There are many possible reasons and mechanisms for this. Diabetics …

The "No Property" Problem: Understanding Poverty By Understanding Wealth, Jane B. Baron
The "No Property" Problem: Understanding Poverty By Understanding Wealth, Jane B. Baron
Michigan Law Review
Could it be that understanding homelessness and poverty is less a function of understanding the homeless and the poor than of understanding how the wealthy come to ignore and tolerate them? This is one of the more intriguing suggestions of anthropologist Kim Hopper's Reckoning with Homelessness, and it echoes claims made by lawyers who, like Hopper, have spent much of their careers advocating on behalf of the homeless. While Hopper's new book is first and foremost a work of anthropology, its structure strongly parallels recent work by legal scholars who have sought to assess the effects of litigation and lobbying …
Generalizing Disability, Michael Ashley Stein
Generalizing Disability, Michael Ashley Stein
Michigan Law Review
Published in 1949, Joseph Tussman and Jacobus tenBroek's article The Equal Protection of the Laws has exerted longstanding influence on subsequent Fourteenth Amendment scholarship. Insightfully, Tussman and tenBroek identified a paradox: although the very notion of equality jurisprudence is a "pledge of the protection of equal laws," laws themselves frequently classify individuals, and "the very idea of classification is that of inequality." Notably, classification raises two sometimes concurrent varieties of inequality: over-inclusiveness and under-inclusiveness. Of these, over-inclusiveness is a more egregious equal protection violation due to its ability to "reach out to the innocent bystander, the hapless victim of circumstance …
Spectres Of Law & Economics, William H. Widen
Spectres Of Law & Economics, William H. Widen
Michigan Law Review
There are spectres haunting law and economics - the spectres of G.W.F. Hegel and Jacques Lacan. This is one of the central theses of Professor Jeanne L. Schroeder's challenging new book: The Triumph of Venus, the Erotics of the Market ("Triumph of Venus"). Schroeder uses insights inspired by the teachings of Hegel and the French psychoanalyst, Lacan, to critique some basic assumptiosn made by scholars who use economic ideas to investigate the law and legal institutions - the law and economics ("L&E") practitioners. The book devotes much space to criticism of Judge Posner's vision of law, using it …

Wrestling With Father Shakespeare: Contemporary Revisions Of King Lear And The Tempest., Erin Melinda Denise Presley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In Shakespeare’s The Tempest and King Lear, the relationship between the father and his children affects the progression and outcome of events. Goneril and Regan oppose Lear after Cordelia’s untimely rebellion and disownment. In The Tempest, Caliban desires to overthrow Prospero for freedom. Similarly, the appropriative offspring also exhibit rebellious “children” challenging authority. In Jane Smiley’s revision of King Lear and Aimé Césaire’s rewriting of The Tempest, defiance renders the children fatherless. In Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Ariel initially disregards her father but ultimately accepts his rule. In Gloria Naylor’s Mama Day, the text itself becomes an orphan as the …
