Does Seed Size Affect The Rate Of Germination And Early Seedling Growth In Hairy Vetch?, Joy Ekpo May 2004

Does Seed Size Affect The Rate Of Germination And Early Seedling Growth In Hairy Vetch?, Joy Ekpo

McCabe Thesis Collection

Size is an important characteristic of seed quality because larger seeds with larger volume contain more resources and are likely to exhibit greater vigor than smaller seeds (Ellis, 1992). In a range of plant species, seed size has been shown to affect germination rate, emergence rate, success of establishment, and growth (Black 1957; Bentley et al. 1980; Sanderson et al. 2002). Hairy vetch is an annual legume that is used for improvement of soil for pasture and to provide ground cover protecting against erosion (Duke 1981; Undersander 2002; Sattell et al 1988). Problems facing the establishment of hairy vetch are …

Genetic Analysis Of The Putative Streptolysin O Regulator From Streptococcus Pyogenes, Robert Tyrone Billingslea May 2004

Genetic Analysis Of The Putative Streptolysin O Regulator From Streptococcus Pyogenes, Robert Tyrone Billingslea

McCabe Thesis Collection

Group A streptococci (Streptococcus pyogenes) is one of the most frequent pathogens of humans. It is estimated that between 5-15% of normal individuals harbor the bacterium, usually in the upper respiratory tract, without signs of disease. S. pyogenes can initiate an active infection when defenses are compromised or when the organism is able to penetrate the host's defenses. When the bacteria invade vulnerable tissues, a variety of suppurative infections can occur. Acute S. pyogenes infection may be present as pharyngitis ("strep throat"), scarlet fever (rash), impetigo (infection of the superficial layers of the skin) or cellulitis (infection of the deep …

Moisture Potential Affects Rate Of Leaf Appearance In Cool Season Grasses, Nina Cherone Terrell May 2004

Moisture Potential Affects Rate Of Leaf Appearance In Cool Season Grasses, Nina Cherone Terrell

McCabe Thesis Collection

The rate of leaf appearance and onset of growth in cool season grasses may be influenced by soil moisture potential and exposure to below freezing temperatures. Levels of moisture potential and days exposed to freezing temperatures, which will restrict leaf appearance, are not well defined. The first part of this study was to determine the effects of different moisture potentials on the leaf appearance rates in two cool season grasses. Italian ryegrass (IRG) and tall wheat grass (TWG) were grown hydroponically at 4 moisture potentials in seed pouches in an incubator under a photoperiod of 13 hours light and 11 …

Record Keeping In Farm Management, Agustin Arzeno May 2004

Record Keeping In Farm Management, Agustin Arzeno

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

The purpose of this document is to discuss the importance of farm record keeping and provide producers with methods to start record keeping practices or improve their current procedures. Today’s complex world economy and the rapid pace of the farming industry makes it impossible for producers to manage a farm enterprise the way their parents did 30 years ago. Without a proper understanding of record keeping and its current and future implications, the farm operator will not make it very far in today’s business environment. Many farm operations are facing significant financial distress due to drought conditions across the state …

Dynamics Of Pectoral Fin Rowing In A Fish With An Extreme Rowing Stroke: The Threespine Stickleback (Gasterosteus Aculeatus), Jeffrey A. Walker May 2004

Dynamics Of Pectoral Fin Rowing In A Fish With An Extreme Rowing Stroke: The Threespine Stickleback (Gasterosteus Aculeatus), Jeffrey A. Walker

Biology

The dynamics of pectoral fin rowing in the threespine stickleback are investigated by measuring the instantaneous force balance on freely swimming fish throughout the stroke cycle and comparing the measured forces with fin motions and an unsteady, blade-element model of pectoral fin propulsion. Both measured and modeled forces suggest that attached vortex and circulatory forces and not inertial (added mass) forces dominate the force balance. Peak forces occur at midstrokes. There is no evidence for large force peaks at the stroke transitions due to either rapid fin rotation (supination) or rapid fin closure against the body. The energetics of pectoral …

Classification Using Generalized Partial Least Squares, Beiying Ding, Robert Gentleman May 2004

Classification Using Generalized Partial Least Squares, Beiying Ding, Robert Gentleman

Bioconductor Project Working Papers

The advances in computational biology have made simultaneous monitoring of thousands of features possible. The high throughput technologies not only bring about a much richer information context in which to study various aspects of gene functions but they also present challenge of analyzing data with large number of covariates and few samples. As an integral part of machine learning, classification of samples into two or more categories is almost always of interest to scientists. In this paper, we address the question of classification in this setting by extending partial least squares (PLS), a popular dimension reduction tool in chemometrics, in …

Practioner- Heal Thyself! Challenges In Enabling Organizational Health, Kathyrn Goldman-Schyuler

Organization Management Journal

In order to elucidate my approach to organizational health, I explore the inter-relationship between organizational health and the consultant’s state of being in the context of writings that have influenced the development of my work as an organizational change consultant over the past 20 years: the behavioral sciences and less traditional sources, such as studies with Moshe Feldenkrais, the writings of GI Gurdjieff and the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, and recent research on the impact of meditation on leaders. This is placed in the context of Frost’s (1999, 2001) research on “toxic handlers”.

Predators, Prey Refuges, And The Spatial Scaling Of Density-Dependent Prey Mortality, Graham E. Forrester, Mark A. Steele May 2004

Predators, Prey Refuges, And The Spatial Scaling Of Density-Dependent Prey Mortality, Graham E. Forrester, Mark A. Steele

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

We tested the biological cause of density-dependent mortality in the bridled goby (Coryphopterus glaucofraenum), a small coral reef fish, and evaluated whether this knowledge allowed us to detect density dependence at different spatial scales in natural habitats. To identify the biological cause of density dependence, we manipulated both population density and the availability of shelter (crevices used as refuges from predators) in small plots of continuous reef. We detected strong density-dependent mortality in plots with few refuges, but mortality was density independent in plots with abundant refuges, indicating that limited shelter causes density dependence. Predator density was unrelated …

Beta-Normal Distribution: Bimodality Properties And Application, Felix Famoye, Carl Lee, Nicholas Eugene May 2004

Beta-Normal Distribution: Bimodality Properties And Application, Felix Famoye, Carl Lee, Nicholas Eugene

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The beta-normal distribution is characterized by four parameters that jointly describe the location, the scale and the shape properties. The beta-normal distribution can be unimodal or bimodal. This paper studies the bimodality properties of the beta-normal distribution. The region of bimodality in the parameter space is obtained. The beta-normal distribution is applied to fit a numerical bimodal data set. The beta-normal fits are compared with the fits of mixture-normal distribution through simulation.

Some Improvements In Kernel Estimation Using Line Transect Sampling, Omar M. Eidous May 2004

Some Improvements In Kernel Estimation Using Line Transect Sampling, Omar M. Eidous

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Kernel estimation provides a nonparametric estimate of the probability density function from which a set of data is drawn. This article proposes a method to choose a reference density in bandwidth calculation for kernel estimator using line transect sampling. The method based on testing the shoulder condition, if the shoulder condition seems to be valid using as reference the half normal density, while if the shoulder condition does not seem to be valid, we will use exponential reference density. Accordingly, the performances of the resultant estimator are studied under a wide range of underlying models using simulation techniques. The results …

Accurate Binary Decisions For Assessing Coronary Artery Disease, Mehmet Ali Cengiz May 2004

Accurate Binary Decisions For Assessing Coronary Artery Disease, Mehmet Ali Cengiz

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Generalized linear models offer convenient and highly applicable tools for modeling and predicting the behavior of random variables in terms of observable factors and covariates. This paper investigates applications of a special case of generalized linear model to improve the accuracy of predictions and decisions adopting Bayesian methods, in the specific context of assessing coronary artery disease. The basic model is developed for this application using binary response. The results clearly demonstrate the potential advantages offered by this approach.

Fisheries Research Report No. 147 - Quantification Of Changes In Recreational Catch And Effort On Blue Swimmer Crabs In Cockburn Sound And Geographe Bay, Neil R. Sumner, B E. Malseed May 2004

Fisheries Research Report No. 147 - Quantification Of Changes In Recreational Catch And Effort On Blue Swimmer Crabs In Cockburn Sound And Geographe Bay, Neil R. Sumner, B E. Malseed

Fisheries Research Reports

Information on the size of the recreational catch was required to address resource allocation issues between recreational and commercial crabbers in Cockburn Sound and Geographe Bay. Management measures designed to allocate more of the catch to the recreational sector were put in place prior to this study at both locations. Estimates of the recreational catch were required to evaluate the effectiveness of these new management measures by comparing the catch shares with a survey conducted in 1996/97.

A 12-month creel survey of recreational boat-based and shore-based crabbing in Cockburn Sound was conducted between September 2001 and August 2002 and in …

Bioguided Processing: A Paradigm Change In Food Production, Robert E. Ward, Heribert J. Watzke, Rafael Jiménez-Flores, J. Bruce German

Dairy Science

The effort to sequence the human genome, and subsequently to make the results publicly available, has created a new paradigm in the biological sciences. Now that we have access to the blueprint of our very structure and those of organisms from viruses to plants to animals, a mechanistic understanding of all the processes involved in our growth and metabolism is possible. Characterization of the genetic differences among us is underway, and should provide the information basis for a new approach to individual health. The challenge to the food industry will be to create product lines that will address individual dietary …

Methods For Detection Of Salmonella Spp., Parichaya Attaphongse

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Worldwide concern about food safety and associated health costs is increasing, and Salmonella contamination of foods is one of the most important causes of foodborne disease outbreaks. Although conventional detection methods for Salmonella offer high sensitivity and low cost, they require many different steps and are very time consuming. Ideally, methods to detect Salmonella in foods should be rapid, provide high specificity and sensitivity, be cost-effective, and low labor-intensive. Many rapid tests have been developed to address these goals, including DNA-based tests such as nucleic acid hybridization and PCR, immunoassay-based tests such as ELISA, ELF A and immunomagnetic method, and …

Influence Of Poultry Litter On Dark Tobacco Growth And Soil Nutrient Availability, Jason Simmons May 2004

Influence Of Poultry Litter On Dark Tobacco Growth And Soil Nutrient Availability, Jason Simmons

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Due to the relatively high value of dark tobacco compared with fertilizer costs, nitrogen is recommended at levels as high as 338 kg ha"1. Such rates of inorganic fertilizers increase the osmotic pressure of the soil solution and soil acidity, often causing reduced stands, Mn toxicity, Mo and Ca deficiencies, and reduced yield and quality of the cured leaf (Sims et al., 1984). Poultry litter utilized as a nutrient source is an inexpensive alternative to this dilemma due to its relatively neutral or alkaline composition. However, due the amount of chloride present in poultry litter, the University of Kentucky advises …

Roadside Memorial Practices: An Examination Of Landscapes Of Commemoration In Warren County, Kentucky, Michael Briggs May 2004

Roadside Memorial Practices: An Examination Of Landscapes Of Commemoration In Warren County, Kentucky, Michael Briggs

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Roadside memorials commemorating the death of automobile crash victims are scattered throughout the Kentucky landscape. This persistent cultural practice contains symbolic elements oftentimes indicative of religious connotations. Because there is a constitutional separation of church and government in the United States, these memorials can prelude controversy if located on state-maintained rights-of-way. This study examines Warren County, Kentucky, and analyzes the spatial distribution of these memorials on the landscape and the cultural implications to society because of their ties to death and dying. Scientific research in various fields of psychology, sociology, folk studies, geoscience, and religious studies was analyzed, including religious …
