Growth And Transport Properties Of Complementary Germanium Nanowire Field Effect Transistors, Andrew B. Greytak, Lincoln J. Lauhon, Mark S. Gudiksen, Charles M. Lieber

Faculty Publications

n- and p-type Ge nanowires were synthesized by a multistep process in which axial elongation, via vapor–liquid–solid (VLS) growth, and doping were accomplished in separate chemical vapor deposition steps. Intrinsic, single-crystal, Ge nanowires prepared by Au nanocluster-mediated VLS growth were surface-doped in situ using diborane or phosphine, and then radial growth of an epitaxial Ge shell was used to cap the dopant layer. Field-effect transistors prepared from these Ge nanowires exhibited on currents and transconductances up to 850 µA/µm and 4.9 µA/V, respectively, with device yields of >85%.

Fundamental Conditions For The Evolution Of Altruism: Towards A Unification Of Theories, Jeffrey Alan Fletcher May 2004

Fundamental Conditions For The Evolution Of Altruism: Towards A Unification Of Theories, Jeffrey Alan Fletcher

Dissertations and Theses

In evolutionary theory the existence of self-sacrificing cooperative traits poses a problem that has engendered decades of debate. The principal theories of the evolution of altruism are inclusive fitness, reciprocal altruism, and multilevel selection. To provide a framework for the unification of these apparently disparate theories, this dissertation identifies two fundamental conditions required for the evolution of altruism: 1) non-zero-sum fitness benefits for cooperation and 2) positive assortment among altruistic behaviors. I demonstrate the underlying similarities in these three theories in the following two ways.

First, I show that the game-theoretic model of the prisoner’s dilemma (PD) is inherent to …

Margaret Cavendish And Scientific Discourse In Seventeenth-Century England, Alisa Curtis Bolander May 2004

Margaret Cavendish And Scientific Discourse In Seventeenth-Century England, Alisa Curtis Bolander

Theses and Dissertations

Although the natural philosophy of Margaret Cavendish is eclectic and uncustomary, it offers an important critique of contemporary scientific methods, especially mechanism and experimentalism. As presented in Observations upon Experimental Philosophy and Blazing World, Cavendish's natural philosophy incorporates rationalistic and subjective elements, urging contemporary natural philosophers to recognize that pure objectivity is unattainable through any method of inquiry and that reason is essential in making sense and use of scientific observation.

In addition to its scientific implications, Cavendish's three-tiered model of matter presents interesting sociopolitical associations. Through her own use of metaphor and her theoretical fusion of matter and motion, …

Effect Of Silicon Content On The Corrosion Resistance And Radiation-Induced Embrittlement Of Materials For Advanced Heavy Liquid Metal Nuclear Systems, Ajit K. Roy May 2004

Effect Of Silicon Content On The Corrosion Resistance And Radiation-Induced Embrittlement Of Materials For Advanced Heavy Liquid Metal Nuclear Systems, Ajit K. Roy

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

The purpose of this collaborative research project involving the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV), Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and Idaho State University (ISU) is to evaluate the effect of silicon (Si) content on the corrosion behavior and radiation-induced embrittlement of martensitic stainless steels having chemical compositions similar to that of the modified 9Cr-1Mo 2 steel. Recent studies at LANL involving Alloy EP-823 of different Si content have demonstrated that increased Si content in this alloy may enhance the corrosion resistance in molten lead-bismuth-eutectic (LBE). Since very little data exists in the open literature on the beneficial effect of …

Extraterritoriality Of The Sherman Act And Deterrence Of Private International Cartels, John M. Connor May 2004

Extraterritoriality Of The Sherman Act And Deterrence Of Private International Cartels, John M. Connor

ExpressO

This paper argues that the facts in the vitamins cartel support decisions in the 2nd and DC circuits to permit wholly foreign direct buyers of globally cartelized products standing to sue in U.S. courts. Such an interpretation of the Sherman Act is justified by conduct that is essentially linked to the management of successful international cartels, namely, the prevention of geographic arbitrage. This paper shows that the degree of injuries imposed on U.S. consumers could not have occurred were it not for coordinated price increases in countries with weak or nonexistent anticartel laws. Moreover, this paper endeavors to demonstrate that, …

Theoretical Mathematical Model Of Fishery Economics, Andre Garron May 2004

Theoretical Mathematical Model Of Fishery Economics, Andre Garron

Honors Theses

The world population recently topped 6 billion people. Each person has the same need to eat, breathe, and drink. Unfortunately the world's limited resources imply a carrying capacity for the human race. As we approach this critical mass, the strain on our resources becomes increasingly severe. We have already begun to realize such disasters. Many of the world's fisheries have been destroyed, depleted to near nonexistence, or critically overfished. In some cases they only held on because the price of catching the final fish outweighed the potential revenue from catching it. This paper is an attempt to increase our understanding …

Prevalence Of Parasites In Amphipods Diporeia Spp. From Lakes Michigan And Huron, Usa, Gretchen A. Messick, Robin M. Overstreet, Thomas F. Nalepa, Sue Tyler May 2004

Prevalence Of Parasites In Amphipods Diporeia Spp. From Lakes Michigan And Huron, Usa, Gretchen A. Messick, Robin M. Overstreet, Thomas F. Nalepa, Sue Tyler

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Amphipods of Diporeia spp. have declined considerably during the last decade in the Great Lakes. We examined the possibility that disease may be affecting these populations. A histological survey assessed the parasites in species of Diporeia within Lakes Huron and Michigan, USA, and the host response to some of them and to unknown factors. Amphipods were found to have an intranuclear inclusion body, and were hosts to a rickettsia-like organism, fungi, a haplosporidian, a microsporidian, epibiotic ciliates, a gregarine, a cestode, acanthocephalans and nodule formations. Epibiotic ciliates were most common (37% prevalence of infection), but a microsporidian (3.8%), a rickettsia-like …

Fiber Type And Temperature Dependence Of Inorganic Phosphate: Implications For Fatigue, Edward Patrick Debold, H. Dave, Robert H. Fitts May 2004

Fiber Type And Temperature Dependence Of Inorganic Phosphate: Implications For Fatigue, Edward Patrick Debold, H. Dave, Robert H. Fitts

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Elevated levels of Pi are thought to cause a substantial proportion of the loss in muscular force and power output during fatigue from intense contractile activity. However, support for this hypothesis is based, in part, on data from skinned single fibers obtained at low temperatures (≤15°C). The effect of high (30 mM) Pi concentration on the contractile function of chemically skinned single fibers was examined at both low (15°C) and high (30°C) temperatures using fibers isolated from rat soleus (type I fibers) and gastrocnemius (type II fibers) muscles. Elevating Pi from 0 to 30 mM at saturating …

Experimental And Theoretical Studies On The Pharmacodynamics Of Cisplatin In Jurkat Cells, Kirk A. Tacka, Dava Szalda, Abdul-Kader Souid, Jerry Goodisman, James C. Dabrowiak May 2004

Experimental And Theoretical Studies On The Pharmacodynamics Of Cisplatin In Jurkat Cells, Kirk A. Tacka, Dava Szalda, Abdul-Kader Souid, Jerry Goodisman, James C. Dabrowiak

Chemistry - All Scholarship

For Jurkat cells in culture exposed to cisplatin (1), we measured the number of platinum adducts on DNA and showed that it is proportional to the AUC, the area under the concentration vs time curve, for cisplatin. The number of platinum-DNA adducts is measured immediately following exposure to drug. The AUC is calculated either as the product of the initial cisplatin concentration and the exposure time or as the integral under the concentration vs time curve for the unreacted dichloro species, which decreases exponentially. We also show that the number of adducts correlates with decreases in respiration, with the amount …

Reinforcements As An Intervention In Children With Bipolar Disorder, Rachel Agin May 2004

Reinforcements As An Intervention In Children With Bipolar Disorder, Rachel Agin

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to test social and token reinforcements as an intervention to help eliminate behavior problems that are common in children with Bipolar Disorder. The subject was a six-year-old Caucasian boy diagnosed as bipolar. The experiment was performed during eight non-consecutive group therapy sessions. It was hypothesized that there would be a significant difference in behavior from the baseline measures as compared to post-reinforcement measures. The hypothesis was proven wrong however, because results show the baseline and post-reinforcement measures were almost identical. It was concluded that although the results were not significant, the data shows there …

Children Of Divorce Versus Children Of Intact Families And Their Adjustment To College, Kimberly Martin May 2004

Children Of Divorce Versus Children Of Intact Families And Their Adjustment To College, Kimberly Martin

Theses and Dissertations

Children of divorce and children of intact families grow up in very different worlds. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects that being a child of divorce has on later adjustment in college. A sample of 95 undergraduate students were administered the Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire. Of the 95 students, 18 reported being from divorced families, two reported parental death, and 75 reported their parents still being married. Results indicated that the age a child experiences their parents divorce can have a significant impact on their later attachment to college and social adjustment to college. More …

An Investigation Of Rowan University Students' Attitudes Toward Homosexuality, Annmarie Panarello May 2004

An Investigation Of Rowan University Students' Attitudes Toward Homosexuality, Annmarie Panarello

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this investigation was to investigate undergraduate student attitudes toward homosexuality. Between group differences were explored in terms of (a) gender, (b) religious affiliation, and (c) year of study. One hundred and twenty nine Rowan University undergraduate students participated by answering a homophobia scale questionnaire, and a demographic questionnaire. A three-way analysis of variance revealed significant differences in mean scores between men and women, affirming that women scored lower on the homophobia scale than men. No other between group differences were found to be statistically significant. Implications for future research are discussed.

The Effect Of Stress On Female Collegiate Athletes' Alcohol Consumption, Holly M. Thornton May 2004

The Effect Of Stress On Female Collegiate Athletes' Alcohol Consumption, Holly M. Thornton

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research study was to investigate the relationship between the amounts of stress female student athletes experience with the amount of alcohol they consume at the collegiate level. It was hypothesized that the more stress a student athlete experiences the more likely she is to consume alcohol. Thirty-five female student athletes from the east coast of the United States filled out surveys assessing the amount of stress experienced and the amount of alcohol consumed, and proved the proposed hypothesis to be false. The Pearson Correlation Analysis was used and found that there was no significant relationship between …
