BACKGROUND: A case of West Nile virus (WNV) encephalitis associated with transfusion of blood that did not react when tested for WNV by minipool (MP) nucleic acid testing (NAT) is described. A Nebraska man developed clinical encephalitis 13 days after surgery and transfusion of 26 blood components. Antibody testing confirmed WNV infection. An investigation was initiated to determine the source of this infection.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: The patient’s family members were interviewed to identify risk factors for WNV infection. Residual samples were retested for WNV RNA using transcription-mediated amplification (TMA) assay and two polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays. Blood …

At Augsburg College, diversity plays an important role in delivering transforming education for its students and is instrumental in defining the college community. This research identifies major influencers in the college decision-making process for TRIO participants. Federally funded TRIO programs like SSS provide access to higher education for students with academic need, financial need, who are first generation college students, or students who have disabilities. In order to assess the major influencers in the college decision-making process, current TRIO students at Augsburg College were asked to complete a survey. The Designation Of "Distinct Population Segments" Under The Endangered Species Act In Light Of National Association Of Homebuilders V. Norton, Katherine M. Hausrath

Chicago-Kent Law Review

The term "distinct population segment" in the Endangered Species Act has no defined scientific meaning. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Marine Fisheries Service have jointly promulgated a policy requiring a distinct population segment to be both: (1) discrete and (2) significant. However, the implementation of this policy has led to inconsistent listing decisions and the failure to list distinct populations of species that require protection under the Endangered Species Act. Abstract

The story of Siglufjörour (Siglufjordur), a north Iceland village that became the "Herring Capital of the World," provides a case study of complex interactions between physical, biological, and social systems. Siglufjörour's natural capital - a good harbor and proximity to prime herring grounds - contributed to its development as a major fishing center during the first half of the 20th century. This herring fishery was initiated by Norwegians, but subsequently expanded by Icelanders to such an extent that the fishery, and Siglufjörour in particular, became engines helping to pull the whole Icelandic economy. This review article broadly traces the historical development, diagnostic criteria, clinical and neuropathological characteristics, and treatment strategies related to mild cognitive impairment (MCI), The concept of MCI is considered in the context of other terms that have been developed to characterize the elderly with varying degrees of cognitive impairment Criteria based on clinical global scale ratings, cognitive test performance, and performance on other domains of functioning are discussed. Approaches employing clinical, neuropsychological, neuroimaging, biological, and molecular genetic methodology used in the validation of MCI are considered, including results from cross-sectional, longitudinal, and postmortem investigations.
