Racial Discrepancies In The Association Between Paternal Vs. Maternal Educational Level And Risk Of Low Birthweight In Washington State, Christina Nicolaidis, Cynthia W. Ko, Somnath Saha, Thomas D. Koepsell
School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
Background: The role of paternal factors in determining the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes has received less attention than maternal factors. Similarly, the interaction between the effects of race and socioeconomic status (SES) on pregnancy outcomes is not well known. Our objective was to assess the relative importance of paternal vs. maternal education in relation to risk of low birth weight (LBW) across different racial groups.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective population-based cohort study using Washington state birth certificate data from 1992 to 1996 (n = 264,789). We assessed the associations between maternal or paternal education and LBW, adjusting for …

Natural Selection Drives Altitudinal Divergence At The Albumin Locus In Deer Mice, Peromyscus Maniculatus, Jay F. Storz, Jean M. Dubach
Jay F. Storz Publications
In populations that are distributed across steep environmental gradients, the potential for local adaptation is largely determined by the spatial scale of fitness variation relative to dispersal distance. Since altitudinal gradients are generally characterized by dramatic ecological transitions over relatively short linear distances, adaptive divergence across such gradients will typically require especially strong selection to counterbalance the homogenizing effect of gene flow. Here we report the results of a study that was designed to test for evidence of adaptive divergence across an altitudinal gradient in a natural population of deer mice, Peromyscus maniculatus. We conducted a multilocus survey of …

Background
Intermediate-conductance, calcium-activated potassium channels (IKs) modulate proliferation and differentiation in mesodermal cells by enhancing calcium influx, and they contribute to the physiology of fluid movement in certain epithelia. Previous reports suggest that IK channels stimulate proliferative growth in a keratinocyte cell line; however, because these channels indirectly promote calcium influx, a critically unique component of the keratinocyte differentiation program, an alternative hypothesis is that they would be anti-proliferative and pro-differentiating. This study addresses these hypotheses.
Methods
Real-time PCR, patch clamp electrophysiology, and proliferation assays were used to determine if human IK1 (hIK1) expression and function are correlated with either …

Outdoor Education And Meaningful Learning: Finding The Attributes Of Meaningful Learning Experiences In An Outdoor Education Program, Stacy Tooru Taniguchi
Outdoor Education And Meaningful Learning: Finding The Attributes Of Meaningful Learning Experiences In An Outdoor Education Program, Stacy Tooru Taniguchi
Theses and Dissertations
This phenomenological study sought to identify the common attributes of meaningful learning experiences as found in an outdoor education program. The pragmatic educational philosophy of John Dewey provides the rationale for the essence of meaningful learning in our schools and this research identifies the attributes of educative reflective experiences that are also meaningful learning experiences. Thirteen students enrolled in the Wilderness Writing Program, offered during the fall semester of 2003 at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, made up the focus group of this study. Their participation in four outdoor recreational activities and their reflections about their experiences became the …

Nonparametric Methods For Analyzing Replication Origins In Genomewide Data, Debashis Ghosh
Nonparametric Methods For Analyzing Replication Origins In Genomewide Data, Debashis Ghosh
The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Due to the advent of high-throughput genomic technology, it has become possible to globally monitor cellular activities on a genomewide basis. With these new methods, scientists can begin to address important biological questions. One such question involves the identification of replication origins, which are regions in chromosomes where DNA replication is initiated. In addition, one hypothesis regarding replication origins is that their locations are non-random throughout the genome. In this article, we develop methods for identification of and cluster inference regarding replication origins involving genomewide expression data. We compare several nonparametric regression methods for the identification of replication origin locations. …
Genetic Control Of Branching In Foxtail Millet, Andrew Doust, Katrien Devos, Michael Gadberry, Mike Gale, Elizabeth Kellogg
Genetic Control Of Branching In Foxtail Millet, Andrew Doust, Katrien Devos, Michael Gadberry, Mike Gale, Elizabeth Kellogg
Biology Department Faculty Works
Reduction in vegetative branching is commonplace when crops are domesticated from their wild progenitors. We have identified genetic loci responsible for these changes in foxtail millet (Setaria italica), a crop closely related to maize but whose genetics are little known. Quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis and comparative genomics reveal that basal branching (tillering) and axillary branching are partially controlled by separate loci, and that the orthologue of teosinte branched1, the major gene controlling branching phenotype in maize, has only a minor and variable effect. We identify other candidate genes for control of branching, including a number of hormone biosynthesis pathway …

A remote labeling method has been developed to determine (18)O kinetic isotope effects (KIEs) in Ras-catalyzed GTP hydrolysis. Substrate mixtures consist of (13)C-depleted GTP and [(18)O,(13)C]GTP that contains (18)O at phosphoryl positions of mechanistic interest and (13)C at all carbon positions of the guanosine moiety. Isotope ratios of the nonvolatile substrates and products are measured by using a chemical reaction interface/isotope ratio mass spectrometer. The isotope effects are 1.0012 (0.0026) in the gamma nonbridge oxygens, 1.0194 (0.0025) in the leaving group oxygens (the beta-gamma oxygen and the two beta nonbridge oxygens), and 1.0105 (0.0016) in the two beta nonbridge oxygens. …

A Case Study Of S-Curve Regression Method To Project Control Of Construction Management Via T-S Fuzzy Model, Ting-Ya Hsieh, Morris Hsiao-Lung Wang, Cheng-Wu Chen
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
In the contractual business, construction firms are generally more concerned with short-term financial strategies than the longterm ones. Working capital management is the central issue of all short-term financial concerns. Thus, it's urgent to study the cash portion of working capital management to rationalize the amount of cash and current assets possessed in certain time. The S-curve is quite suitable to represent the relationship between project duration and complete progress in practical usage of construction management. Based on the technique of Takagi-Sugeno (T−S) fuzzy model, the fuzzy regression model is constructed for curve fitting problems. According to the cash flow …

Wheat Cultivar-Specific Selection Of 2,4-Diacetylphloroglucinol-Producing Fluorescent Pseudomonas Species From Resident Soil Populations, M. Mazzola, Deanna L. Funnell, J.M. Raaijmakers
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
An emerging body of evidence indicates a role for plant genotype as a determinant of the species and genetic composition of the saprophytic microbial community resident to the rhizosphere. In this study, experiments were conducted to determine the capacity of five different wheat cultivars to enhance resident populations and support introduced strains of 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol (2,4-DAPG)-producing fluorescent pseudomonads, a group of bacteria known to provide biological control of several soilborne diseases. When soils were cropped with three successive 28-day growth cycles of wheat, the 2,4- DAPG-producing strains were consistently recovered from the rhizosphere of the cultivar Lewjain, and commonly were present …

Spinach Curly Top Virus: A Newly Described Curtovirus Species From Southwest Texas With Incongruent Gene Phylogenies, Surendranath Baliji, Mark C. Black, Roy C. French, Drake C. Stenger, Garry Sunter
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
A curtovirus associated with a disease of spinach was isolated in southwest Texas during 1996. Disease symptoms included severe stunting and chlorosis, with younger leaves curled, distorted, and dwarfed. Viral DNA was purified and an infectious clone obtained. Agroinoculation using a construct bearing full-length tandem repeats of the cloned viral genome resulted in systemic infection of species in six of seven plant families tested, indicating that the virus has a wide host range. Symptoms produced in spinach agroinoculated with cloned viral DNA were similar to those observed in the field. Viral single-stranded and double-stranded DNA forms typical of curtovirus infection …
