The Diversity Of Benthic Mollusks Of Lake Victoria And Lake Burigi, Ja Mwambungu

Molluscan diversity, abundance and distribution in sediments of Lake Victoria and its satellite lake, Lake Burigi, were investigated. The survey was carried out in January and February 2002 for Lake Victoria and in March and April 2002 for Lake Burigi. Ten genera were recorded from four zones of Lake Victoria while only three genera were recorded from Lake Burigi. In Lake Victoria the most diverse zone was Mara zone. The mollusca communities comprised of Bellamya, Gabbiella, Melanoides, Bulinus, Biomphalaria and Cleopatra (Gastropoda) and Corbicula, Eupera (Byssanodonta), Caelatura and Sphaerium (Bivalvia). Parasites Of Clarias Gariepinus (Burchell, 1822) (Pisces: Clariidae) From The Mwanza Gulf, Lake Victoria, C Mwita, G Nkwengulila

Seventeen species of parasites were recovered from 1071 Clarias gariepinus examined from the Mwanza Gulf of Lake Victoria. The parasite fauna comprised of four ectoparasites, a Monogenea, Hirudinea, crustacean and a Digenea; and fourteen endoparasites, five nematodes, five trematodes and three cestodes. Twelve parasite species were adults and five were larval forms. Ten were identified to species, six to genus and one to family level. Many species recorded are common to C. gariepinus, a few, e.g. Tylodelphys species is a first record in fish of Africa, thus represents a new host record. Spinitectus petterae is reported for the first time …

The survey was carried out in January/February and July/August 2002 to investigate phytoplankton species diversity, spatial distribution, numerical abundance and total biomass (chlorophyll a concentration) in 10 selected stations on the Tanzanian side of Lake Victoria. At each station, samples for diversity data were collected by plankton net, which was towed at the surface water, while those for spatial distribution and abundance were collected using a 1 l Van Dorn water sampler. A total of 113 species belonging to 52 different genera were identified. Cyanobacteria were the most diverse group in both seasons. The concentration of chlorophyll a ranged from …

Twenty four hour sampling sessions were conducted to investigate the feeding patterns and food habits of Lates niloticus in the Speke Gulf, Lake Victoria during January/February, July/August and December 2002. Feeding activity was more pronounced during daytime mostly in morning hours than during the night. The most dominant food item was haplochromines. There was a significant difference in the occurrence of food items in the gut of L. niloticus with time. However, there was no significant difference in the occurrence of food items in the habitat at different times. The study concludes with a recommendation for fishermen to set their …

A comparative study on the shell size and meat weight between Anadara antiquata populations harvested from four intertidal mud flats subjected to varying exploitation pressure in Zanzibar was undertaken between August and December 2000. An analysis of the data from the four study locations Mazizni, Mbweni, Kisakasaka, and Jambiani showed that much smaller sized Anadara , with low meat weights were being harvested from Mazizini and Mbweni in comparison to those harvested from Kisakasaka and Jambiani. A 29 cm long core recovered from a water depth of 5 m in a small closed lake located in the Empakai crater northern Tanzania, is used to document the contents of organic carbon and nitrogen, stable isotopes composition of organic carbon and nitrogen, and C/N ratios and to infer climatic changes from these data. The δ 13C and δ15N values for this core, which averages - 16.5±2.1l and 11.0±5.6l respectively, show a general downcore decrease below 5 cm. However, within this general trend, two peaks enriched in 13C are observable at about 8 cm and 13 cm. The peak …

Total Mercury Concentration In Common Fish Species Of Lake Victoria, Tanzania, J F Machiwa

Total mercury (THg) concentration was analysed in muscles of common fish species of Lake Victoria in the eastern and southern parts of the lake using cold vapour Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometric technique. Mercury concentration in all fish species was generally lower than the WHO maximum allowable concentration (500 ng/g ww) in edible fish parts. The maximum concentration of THg in Lates niloticus samples was 396 ng/g ww. Samples of Oreochromis niloticus had THg concentration ranging between <0.01 and 419 ng/g ww. Clarias gariepinus had THg concentration ranging between 1.2 and 239.1 ng/g ww. All less common fish species, such as, Labeo victirianus, Synodontis victoriae, Oreochromis leucostictus, Schilbe intermedius, Brycinus jacksonii, B. sadleri, Tilapia rendalii, Tilapia zilii and Haplochromines had THg concentration below the WHO maximum allowable limit (500 ng/g ww). The study showed that Hg from small-scale gold mining activities in Lake Victoria basin is not transported to the lake by fluvial discharge. Other possible pathways of Hg input to Lake Victoria are discussed.

War is inherently damaging to the environment. Though these deleterious actions are often attributed to "states" during times of armed conflict, they are normally the result of military operations conducted by members of the military who are carrying out orders from military superiors. While many have proposed systemic changes that affect how states can or should be held responsible, few have commented on the process of holding individual military personnel or commanders responsible for battlefield acts of environmental damage. BACKGROUND: Two or more factor mixed factorial experiments are becoming increasingly common in microarray data analysis. In this case study, the two factors are presence (Patients with Alzheimer's disease) or absence (Control) of the disease, and brain regions including olfactory bulb (OB) or cerebellum (CER). In the design considered in this manuscript, OB and CER are repeated measurements from the same subject and, hence, are correlated. To determine whether deer can transmit Neospora caninum, brains of naturally infected white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) were fed to 4 dogs; 2 of these dogs shed oocysts. Oocysts from 1 of the dogs were tested by polymerase chain reaction and found to be positive for N. caninum and negative for Hammondia heydorni. The internal transcribed spacer 1 sequence of the new strain (designated NC-deer1) was identical to N. caninum from domestic animals, indicating that N. caninum is transmitted between wild and domestic animals, often enough to prevent divergent evolution of isolated populations of the parasite. Fears that terrorists may have the capabilities and intent to disseminate a variety of biologic agents has once again brought smallpox into the American consciousness. On December 13, 2002, recognizing that the global discontinuation of routine smallpox vaccination over two decades ago had left most Americans unprotected and vulnerable to the ravaging effects of the virus, the President announced a precautionary measure to begin vaccinating teams of emergency responders. The program commenced January 24, 2003. The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey

The current checklist covers the 170 known species and additional 48 subspecies known to occur in the Yosemite region, California, United States. This represents a total of 218 taxa (some being undescribed and unnamed) now recognized in the study area. This compares with Garth and Tilden’s 1963 survey which recognized 134 species and 16 additional subspecies, a total of 150 taxa. In addition to those, six additional species reported from the region are “questionable or doubtful” and another six species occur just outside the defined region.

Method Of Producing An Integrated Circuit With A Carbon Nanotube, Rudiger Schlaf

A method of producing an integrated circuit with a carbon nanotube is disclosed. The integrated circuit includes a source, a drain, and a gate, and the source and the drain are positioned on the gate. A catalytic material is deposited onto the source. The catalytic material is then subjected to chemical vapor deposition. This initiates growth of the carbon nanotube such that the carbon nanotube extends from the source. Next, the carbon nanotube is bent toward the integrated circuit such that the carbon nanotube extends between the source and the drain to render the circuit operable.

Using scanning probe techniques, surface properties such as shear stiffness and friction can be measured with a resolution in the nanometer range. The torsional deflection or buckling of atomic force microscope cantilevers has previously been used in order to measure the lateral forces acting on the tip. This letter shows that the flexural vibration modes of cantilevers oscillating in their width direction parallel to the sample surface can also be used for imaging. These lateral cantilever modes exhibit vertical deflection amplitudes if the cantilever is asymmetric in thickness direction, e.g., by a trapezoidal cross section.

An experiment to investigate the somatic embryogenesis from shoot-derived callus of Pogostemon cablin (nilam plant) has been conducted at the Plant Biotechnology Laboratory, Agricultural Faculty, University of Jambi from January through to July 2004. Callus proliferation was induced on explants taken from young shoots cultured on solid MS medium supplemented with phytohormones NAA (0.8, 1.1, 1.4, and 1.7 ppm) and BAP (1.1, 1.4, 1.7, and 2.0 ppm) under in vitro conditions. Cultures were maintained at 25 ± 1 oC, light intensity 50 mmol m-2 s-1, and 16 hours photoperiod. The results indicated that all cultured explants showed positive responses on …

Plankton Abundance in Bangka – Belitung and South China Sea Waters, May - June 2002. The observation of plankton condition in Bangka, Belitung and South Cina Sea was conducted during May – June 2002. The parameters observed were focused on the microplankton and macroplankton communities. Twenty seven points of observation were grouped into two locations based on the distance of the observation station. Plankton abundance varied with location groups from 2069 to 23392 cells/l and 1249 to 5448 individuals/m3 for microplankton and macroplankton, respectively. All-trans retinoic acid (RA) has been implicated in mediation of cardiac growth inhibition in neonatal cardiomyocytes. However, the associated signaling mechanisms remain unclear. Utilizing neonatal cardiomyocytes, we demonstrated that RA suppressed the hypertrophic features induced by cyclic stretch or angiotensin II (Ang II). Cyclic stretch- or Ang II-induced activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2), C-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAP kinase) was dose- and time-dependently inhibited by RA. Significant inhibition was observed by 5 μM RA, from 8 to 24 h of pretreatment. This inhibitory effect was not mediated at the level of mitogen-activated protein …

One of the defining features of plants is a body plan based on the physical properties of cell walls. Structural analyses of the polysaccharide components, combined with high-resolution imaging, have provided the basis for much of the current understanding of cell walls. The application of genetic methods has begun to provide new insights into how walls are made, how they are controlled, and how they function. However, progress in integrating biophysical, developmental, and genetic information into a useful model will require a system-based approach.

Efficient use of the large data sets generated by gene expression microarray experiments requires computerized data analysis approaches. In this chapter we briefly describe and illustrate two broad families of commonly used data analysis methods: class discovery and class prediction methods. A wide range of alternative approaches for clustering and classification of gene expression data are available. While differences in efficiency do exist, none of the well established approaches is uniformly superior to others. Choosing an approach requires consideration of the goals of the analysis, the background knowledge, and the specific experimental constraints. The quality of an algorithm is important, …

Twenty-five percent of the U.S. population is black, Hispanic, or Native American, whereas only 6.1 percent of the nation’s physicians come from these backgrounds. Students from these minority groups simply don’t get into medical school as often as their majority peers, which results in a scarcity of minority physicians. This inequity translates into suffering and death, as documented by the Institute of Medicine. Poorer health outcomes in minority populations have been linked to lack of access to care, lower rates of therapeutic procedures, and language barriers. Since physicians from minority groups practice disproportionately in minority communities, they are an important …
