Immunoglobulin Heavy-Chain Receptor Editing Is Observed In The Nod/Scid Model Of Human B-Cell Development, G. R. Kolar, J. D. Capra
Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works
Receptor editing and receptor revision are the two mechanisms of antibody diversity that result in either complete V-gene replacement or the formation of hybrid V genes. We do not yet understand how this process unfolds, because they are rare and difficult to study in vivo. In this study, we describe a family of VH4-34:VH4-61 hybrids isolated from a human B-cell chimeric non-obese diabetic/severe combined immunodeficient mouse. The observation of hybrid immunoglobulin sequences in human B cells that developed in this model system makes it useful for the study of this mechanism of diversification and tolerance.

Sediments, Facies Tracts, And Variations In Sedimentation Rates Of Holocene Platform Carbonate Sediments And Associated Deposits, Northern Belize -- Implications For "Representative" Sedimentation Rates, Wan Yang, Salvatore J. Mazzullo, Chellie S. Teal
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In stratigraphic analysis and simulation, sedimentation rates are typically assumed to be constant for meter-scale sedimentation units of similar lithology. The rates of Holocene, shallow-marine carbonate and associated sediments within an 820 km2 area of Chetumal Bay in northern Belize were evaluated to test this assumption. Rates were determined from thickness data from 363 locations, durations derived from 14C age dates of mangrove peat on Pleistocene bedrock limestone and of overlying cerithid gravels, and reference to a sea-level curve for this area. The rate of entire Holocene sections (basal transgressive mangrove peat, shelly gravel, and overlying carbonate) varies …

Responses Of Nesting Bobolinks (Dolichonyx Oryzivorus) To Habitat Edges, Eric K. Bollinger, Thomas A. Gavin
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
ABSTRACT.-Avoidance of habitat edges may be contributing to reduced densities of grassland birds in small habitat patches. Nest densities for grassland-nesting Bobolinks (Dolichonyx oryzivorus) were much lower than expected within 25m of forest edges at three sites in New York, and that pattern ("edge avoidance") extended to 100m at one site. Nests located within 50 m of forest or wooded hedgerow edges had lower daily survival rates, compared with nests >100m from any habitat edge. Bobolinks tended to move away from forest edges when renesting after nest failure; that pattern was especially evident in females that placed their first nest …

Neuroanatomical Structure Of The Spinner Dolphin (Stenella Longirostris Orientalis) Brain From Magnetic Resonance Images, Lori Marino, Keith Sudheimer, William A. Mclellan, John I. Johnson
Veterinary Science and Medicine Collection
High-resolution magnetic resonance (MR) images of the brain of an adult spinner dolphin (Stenella longirostris orientalis) were acquired in the coronal plane at 55 antero-posterior levels. From these scans a computergenerated set of resectioned virtual images in the two remaining orthogonal planes was constructed with the use of the VoxelView and VoxelMath (Vital Images, Inc.) programs. Neuroanatomical structures were labeled in all three planes, providing the first labeled anatomical description of the spinner dolphin brain.

Genetic Analysis Of Song Dialect Populations In Puget Sound White-Crowned Sparrows, Jill Soha, Douglas Nelson, Patricia Parker
Biology Department Faculty Works
The relationship between cultural variation and biological variation among natural populations has been the subject of both theoretical and empirical study. Zonotrichia leucophrys pugetensis is one of three subspecies of white-crowned sparrow known to form geographical song dialects. We investigated whether these dialects correspond to genetic differences among Z. l. pugetensis populations. We compared allele frequencies at four microsatellite loci in males from 11 sites spanning six dialects over the subspecies' range in Oregon and Washington. Cluster analysis and genotype assignment tests indicated no tendency for sample sites within dialect areas to be genetically more similar than are sites from …

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports
A water quality sampling station was installed at the Washington County road 195 bridge on the West Fork of the White River just above the confluence of the three main forks of the Upper White River in December 2001. The Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP) was approved by EPA Region six on March 2002 and sampling was begun at that time. This station is coordinated with a USGS gauging station at the same location. This station was instrumented to collect samples at sufficient intervals across the hydrograph to accurately estimate the flux of total suspended solids, nitrogen and phosphorus into …

Learning Mixture Models With The Regularized Latent Maximum Entropy Principle, Shaojun Wang, Dale Schuurmans, Fuchun Peng, Yunxin Zhao
Kno.e.sis Publications
This paper presents a new approach to estimating mixture models based on a recent inference principle we have proposed: the latent maximum entropy principle (LME). LME is different from Jaynes' maximum entropy principle, standard maximum likelihood, and maximum a posteriori probability estimation. We demonstrate the LME principle by deriving new algorithms for mixture model estimation, and show how robust new variants of the expectation maximization (EM) algorithm can be developed. We show that a regularized version of LME (RLME), is effective at estimating mixture models. It generally yields better results than plain LME, which in turn is often better than …

Plan Of Management For The Point Quobba Fish Habitat Protection Area, Department Of Fisheries
Fisheries Management Papers
Point Quobba is a popular site for locals and tourists for beach activities, fishing and snorkelling, and as a place for children to learn to swim and gain an awareness of the marine environment. The marine life and habitats of the area are of considerable scientific and recreational interest and are highly valued in the local community. However, the area is at risk from a high level of use and from conflict between users - which is due to the area’s proximity to popular tourism sites, the boat ramp, camping and settlement areas.

With a growing population and advances in technology, fishing pressure will continue to grow and anglers will become more efficient at targeting fish, particularly offshore demersal species such as blue groper, dhufish, red snapper, breaksea cod and queen snapper. There is also a clear need for recreational fisheries management to complement the existing management arrangements for the charter industry, and provide the necessary framework for recreational fishing to be incorporated into an integrated management framework with other fishing sectors.

Fisheries Management Paper No.180 - Future Management Arrangements For Western Australia's Temperate Shark Fisheries., Jane Borg, R. Mcauley
Fisheries Management Papers
This paper provides a summary of the attributes of these temperate shark fisheries, and sets out the proposed objectives and the measures available to achieve them.
In summary, primary measures are aimed at the sustainability of dusky and whiskery sharks, with dusky sharks being of greater concern as their status is more critical. The final decision on management of these fisheries cannot compromise sustainability, not only because of the Department’s obligations under the Fish Resources Management Act, 1994, but also:
• national and international obligations associated with ecologically sustainable development;
• export accreditation under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation …

Finite Concentration Effects On Diffusion-Controlled Reactions, Chung Wong
Finite Concentration Effects On Diffusion-Controlled Reactions, Chung Wong
Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works
The algorithm by Northrup, Allison, and McCammon has been used for two decades for calculating the diffusion-influenced rate-constants of enzymatic reactions. Although many interesting results have been obtained, the algorithm is based on the assumption that substrate-substrate interactions can be neglected. This approximation may not be valid when the concentration of the ligand is high. In this work, we constructed a simulation model that can take substrate-substrate interactions into account. We first validated the model by carrying out simulations in ways that could be compared to analytical theories. We then carried out simulations to examine the possible effects of substrate-substrate …

Responses Of Kit Foxes (Vulpes Macrotis) To Antipredator Blood-Squirting And Blood Of Texas Horned Lizards (Phrynosoma Cornutum), Wade Sherbrooke, George Middendorf, M Douglas
Department of Biology Faculty Publications
Six related studies were conducted with four captive juvenile Kit Foxes (Vulpes macrotis) to test the hypothesis that blood-squirting from eye-socket tissues by Texas Horned Lizards (Phrynosoma cornutum) is a canid antipredator defense. In 16 trials, naive “hungry” foxes killed and ate adult Yarrow's Spiny Lizards (Sceloporus jarrovii; eight of eight trials) slightly more frequently than adult P. cornutum (six of eight trials). Adverse responses by foxes (head shaking) were seen in five of six trials in which Phrynosoma squirted blood. Later these experienced foxes, fed ad libitum, killed and ate mice (eight of eight trials) while largely ignoring P. …

Universal Jurisdiction And The Concept Of A Fair Trial Prosecutor V. Fulgence Niyonteze: A Swiss Military Tribunal Case Study, Joshua E. Kastenberg
Faculty Scholarship
It is the overall goal of this article to assess and evaluate concepts of universal jurisdiction and the interrelated right to a fair trial within the capsule of Prosecutor v. Niyonteze. This article analyzes the Niyonteze trial both within a framework of comparative law and against contemporary international law theories of universal jurisdiction and fair trial standards. In this article the term "due process" is subsumed into the larger concept of a fair trial. Likewise, a specific theory of universal jurisdiction is adopted. While universal jurisdiction and the right to a fair trial are often seen as exclusive areas, this …

Retrospective Isotopic Analyses Of Stellar Sea Lion Tooth Annuli And Sea-Bird Feathers: A Cross-Taxa Approach To Investigating Regime And Dietary Shifts In The Gulf Of Alaska, Keith Hobson, Elizabeth Sinclair, Anne York, James Thomason, Richard Merrick
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
Stable isotope (δ15N and δ13C) values of individual tooth annuli of female Steller sea lions (n = 120) collected from the 1960s through the 1980s were used for retrospective analyses of temporal changes in food webs in the Gulf of Alaska and North Pacific Ocean. We also examined isotopically contour feathers of tufted puffins (n = 135) and crested auklets (n = 37) through this period to test for broader isotopic patterns indicative of whole food web changes. Steller sea lions decreased slightly in δ13C and increased in δ15N values, suggesting an …
