Development Of Surface Acoustic Wave Sensors Using Nanostructured Palladium For Hydrogen Detection, Amol V. Chaudhari Jul 2004

Development Of Surface Acoustic Wave Sensors Using Nanostructured Palladium For Hydrogen Detection, Amol V. Chaudhari

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis addresses the development of new gas sensor using surface acoustic wave (SAW) technology. SAW sensors detect the change in mass, modulus, and conductivity of a sensing layer material via absorption or adsorption of an analyte. The advantage of SAW sensor includes low cost, small size, high sensitivity.

We investigated the use of nano-crystalline palladium film for sensing hydrogen gas. We also investigated SAW fabrication for radio frequency (RF) range operation where high signal-to-noise ratios can be achieved. A test-bed consisting of a gas dilution system, a temperature-controlled test cell, a network analyzer, and computer-based measurement system was used …

Behavioral Analysis Of Interactions Between Teachers And Children With Selective Mutism, Jason D. Wallace Jul 2004

Behavioral Analysis Of Interactions Between Teachers And Children With Selective Mutism, Jason D. Wallace

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The present study focused on the interactions between a child with selective mutism and that child's teachers. The hypothesis was that the teachers unknowingly maintained the mutism by not placing the expectations of speech on the child. Therefore, by training three out of the four teachers how to interact with the child with selective mutism, and using the fourth teacher as a control, the researchers were able to identify that the training not only changed the three teachers' behaviors, but also the child with selective mutism's behaviors as well. Also, based on a pre-training/post-training test, the teachers had a much …

Transcriptional Activation Of The Human Prostatic Acid Phosphatase Gene By Nf-Kappab Via A Novel Hexanucleotide-Binding Site., Stanislav Zelivianski, Richard Glowacki, Ming-Fong Lin

Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

Human prostatic acid phosphatase (PAcP) is a prostate epithelium-specific differentiation antigen. Cellular PAcP functions as a neutral protein tyrosine phosphatase and is involved in regulating androgen-promoted prostate cancer cell proliferation. Despite the fact that the promoter of the PAcP gene has been cloned, the transcriptional factors that regulate PAcP expression remain unidentified. This article describes our analyses of the promoter of the PAcP gene. Deletion analyses of the promoter sequence up to -4893 (-4893/+87) revealed that a 577 bp fragment (-1356/-779) represents the unique positive cis-active element in human prostate cancer cells but not in HeLa cervix carcinoma cells. Interestingly, …

The Utilization Of Enzymes In The Synthesis And Modification Of Natural And Nonnatural Compounds: A Chemo-Enzymatic Approach To Enantiomerically Pure Compounds, Jason A. Carr

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The employment of enzymes and whole cells has been important in many industries for centuries. However, it is only in the last 30 years that the use of enzymes for the synthesis of high-value fine chemicals has enjoyed increasing popularity. In fact, esterases and lipases are used almost routinely these days to provide optically active building blocks for the construction of imaginative new routes to chiral target molecules. The major topic of this work describes the utilization of enzymes (namely lipases) in the synthesis and modification of natural and non-natural compounds.

Chapter 1 outlines the strengths and weaknesses of the …

Flash Artifact Suppression In Two-Dimensional Ultrasound Imaging, Richard Yung Chiao, Gregory Ray Bashford, Mark Peter Feilen, Cynthia Andrews Owen Jul 2004

Flash Artifact Suppression In Two-Dimensional Ultrasound Imaging, Richard Yung Chiao, Gregory Ray Bashford, Mark Peter Feilen, Cynthia Andrews Owen

Biomedical Imaging and Biosignal Analysis Laboratory

Flash artifacts in ultrasound flow images are suppressed to achieve enhanced flow discrimination. Flash artifacts typically occur as region of elevated signal strength (brightness or equivalent color) within an image. A flash suppression algorithm included the steps of estimating the flash within an image and then suppressing the estimated flash. The mechanism for flash suppression is spatial filtering. An extension of this basic method used information from adjacent frames to estimate the flash and/or to smooth the resulting image sequence. Temporal information from adjacent frames is used as an adjunct to improve performance.

A Comparative Analysis Of Travel Time Expenditures In The United States, Lavenia Anne Toole-Holt Jul 2004

A Comparative Analysis Of Travel Time Expenditures In The United States, Lavenia Anne Toole-Holt

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Literature on transportation planning and modeling is replete with the concept of a travel time budget. According to this concept, average daily travel times tend to be relatively constant. However, evidence from the 1983 Nationwide Personal Transportation Survey and the 2001 National Household Travel Survey suggest that the average daily travel time has increased by 1.9 minutes per year.

Understanding travel time expenditures is important for forecasting travel demand, especially future vehicle miles of travel. Historically, travel demand models considered vehicle availability and income as limiting factors for travel, but going forward time may be the constraint. As individuals spend …

Probabilistic Disease Classification Of Expression-Dependent Proteomic Data From Mass Spectrometry Of Human Serum, Ryan H. Lilien, Hany Farid, Bruce R. Donald Jul 2004

Probabilistic Disease Classification Of Expression-Dependent Proteomic Data From Mass Spectrometry Of Human Serum, Ryan H. Lilien, Hany Farid, Bruce R. Donald

Dartmouth Scholarship

We have developed an algorithm called Q5 for probabilistic classification of healthy vs. disease whole serum samples using mass spectrometry. The algorithm employs Principal Components Analysis (PCA) followed by Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) on whole spectrum Surface-Enhanced Laser Desorption/Ionization Time of Flight (SELDI-TOF) Mass Spectrometry (MS) data, and is demonstrated on four real datasets from complete, complex SELDI spectra of human blood serum.

Q5 is a closed-form, exact solution to the problem of classification of complete mass spectra of a complex protein mixture. Q5 employs a novel probabilistic classification algorithm built upon a dimension-reduced linear discriminant analysis. Our solution is …

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

FK506-binding protein 52 (FKBP52) is an immunophilin that possesses peptidylprolyl cis/trans-isomerase (PPIase) activity and is a component of a subclass of steroid hormone receptor complexes. Several recent studies indicate that immunophilins can regulate neuronal survival and nerve regeneration although the molecular mechanisms are poorly understood. To investigate the function of FKBP52 in the nervous system, we employed a yeast two-hybrid strategy using the PPIase domain (domain I) as bait to screen a neonatal rat dorsal root ganglia cDNA expression library. We identified an interaction between FKBP52 domain I and Atox1, a copper-binding metallochaperone, Atox1 interacts with Menkes disease protein and …

Detection, Cloning, And Analysis Of A U32 Collagenase In Streptococcus Mutans Gs-5, Marios Ioannides Jul 2004

Detection, Cloning, And Analysis Of A U32 Collagenase In Streptococcus Mutans Gs-5, Marios Ioannides

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Streptococcus mutans is a recognized principal etiologic agent in coronal caries. Although S. mutans has the ability to bind collagen and degrade FALGPA, a synthetic peptide mimicking collagen substrate, its role in dental root caries has not yet been fully elucidated. Degradation of collagen fibrils in dentin was attributed to S. mutans, but a collagenase enzyme has not yet been isolated from this organism. Considering the increased incidence of dental root decay among the elderly, an understanding of the role of the pathogenic factors is necessary to the development of preventive measures. The present study has focused on the …

Clarification On The Nomenclatural Status Of Six Genus-Group Names In The Tribe Trichiini (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Cetoniinae), Andrew Smith

University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers

Six genus-group names in the tribe Trichiini (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Cetoniinae) are discussed with regards to their availability and validity under the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. Aleurostictus Kirby, Archimedius Kirby, Euclidius Kirby, Gymnodus Kirby, Tetrophthalmus Kirby, and Trichinus Kirby all have priority over most other generic names in the tribe but none of the names are in prevailing usage. Clarifications are needed due to the reemergence of Aleurostictus Kirby in current literature and confusion over the nomenclatural status of the other names. Type species are designated for Aleurostictus Kirby, Tetrophthalmus Kirby, and Stegopterus Burmeister and Schaum. The gender of the …

The New Promised Land: Black-White Convergence In The American South, 1940-2000, Jacob L. Vigdor

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

The black-white earnings gap has historically been larger in the South than in other regions of the United States. This paper shows that this regional gap has closed over time, and in fact reversed during the last decades of the twentieth century. Three proposed explanations for this trend focus on changing patterns of selective migration, reduced discrimination in Southern labor markets, and lower levels of school segregation and school resource disparities in the modern South relative to the North. Evidence suggests that reductions in Southern labor market discrimination explain rapid regional convergence in racial wage gaps between 1960 and 1980. …

Monitoring Maize (Zea Mays L.) Phenology With Remote Sensing, Andrés Viña, Anatoly A. Gitelson, Donald C. Rundquist, Galina P. Keydan, Bryan Leavitt, James Schepers Jul 2004

Monitoring Maize (Zea Mays L.) Phenology With Remote Sensing, Andrés Viña, Anatoly A. Gitelson, Donald C. Rundquist, Galina P. Keydan, Bryan Leavitt, James Schepers

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Monitoring crop phenology is required for understanding intra- and interannual variations of agroecosystems, as well as for improving yield prediction models. The objective of this paper is to remotely evaluate the phenological development of maize (Zea mays L.) in terms of both biomass accumulation and reproductive organ appearance. Maize phenology was monitored by means of the recently developed visible atmospherically resistant indices, derived from spectral reflectance data. Visible atmospherically resistant indices provided significant information for crop phenology monitoring as they allowed us to detect: (i) changes due to biomass accumulation, (ii) changes induced by the appearance and development of …

Semiparametric Quantitative-Trait-Locus Mapping: I. On Functional Growth Curves, Ying Qing Chen, Rongling Wu Jul 2004

Semiparametric Quantitative-Trait-Locus Mapping: I. On Functional Growth Curves, Ying Qing Chen, Rongling Wu

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

The genetic study of certain quantitative traits in growth curves as a function of time has recently been of major scientific interest to explore the developmental evolution processes of biological subjects. Various parametric approaches in the statistical literature have been proposed to study the quantitative-trait-loci (QTL) mapping of the growth curves as multivariate outcomes. In this article, we view the growth curves as functional quantitative traits and propose some semiparametric models to relax the strong parametric assumptions which may not be always practical in reality. Appropriate inference procedures are developed to estimate the parameters of interest which characterise the possible …

Semiparametric Quantitative-Trait-Locus Mapping: Ii. On Censored Age-At-Onset, Ying Qing Chen, Chengcheng Hu, Rongling Wu

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

In genetic studies, the variation in genotypes may not only affect different inheritance patterns in qualitative traits, but may also affect the age-at-onset as quantitative trait. In this article, we use standard cross designs, such as backcross or F2, to propose some hazard regression models, namely, the additive hazards model in quantitative trait loci mapping for age-at-onset, although the developed method can be extended to more complex designs. With additive invariance of the additive hazards models in mixture probabilities, we develop flexible semiparametric methodologies in interval regression mapping without heavy computing burden. A recently developed multiple comparison procedures is adapted …
