Dalhousie Law Journal

Using a comparative analysis of the equality movements of sexual minorities in Canada and India the author identifies a symbiosis between the subversive benefits of a deconstructionist approach to equality and the practical achievements to be gained by a rights-based model of social justice. The analysis is conducted through an examination of the role that the expression of same-sex desire plays in the legal and social positions of sexual minorities in Canada and India The author argues that the acquisition of rights can provide sexual minorities with greater access to dominant cultural rituals and that such access provides opportunities to …

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

The rise of the church growth movement in the early 1970’s 1 produced new insights and understanding as to how churches experienced growth and decline. In the years since then an entire industry has emerged to further church growth research and to deliver the resulting insights to pastors and churches. These delivery methods have taken many different forms ranging from formal seminary curriculums, to seminars and workshops, to books and audio or videotapes and computer programs, to expert consultations. As might be predicted, the ability of each delivery system to actually empower lasting, fruitful change among churches and leaders varies.

OBJECTIVE: Addiction to opium and heroin is not only an important social and individual problem in the world but it also affects the human physiology and multiple systems. The aim of this study is to determine the effects of chronic heroin consumption on basal and vagus electrical-stimulated total gastric acid and pepsin secretion in rats. METHODS: The study was carried out in the Department of Physiology, Kerman University of Medical Sciences, Iran from August 2002 to June 2003. Both male and female rats weighing 200-250g were used. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent, acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), otherwise known as aspirin, at different concentrations on the release rates of the pro-inflammatory mediators, leukotriene B4 (LTB4) and leukotriene C4 (LTC4) from in vitro cultured melanocytes obtained from normal pigmented skin of patients with active vitiligo. University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Natural theology has not been held in particularly high regard during the past century and one half. However, recent developments both within science and within philosophy of science offer some new possibilities and resources. In what follows I explore some areas and structures within which natural theological potential might (in principle) emerge. I further argue that the current weapon of choice against substantive science/religion mtertwining - methodological naturalism - not only fails as an inviolable norm, thus leaving the possibility of a genuine natural theology intact, but that it may even have unhappy theological consequences.

AS THE PACE OF SCIENTIFIC ADVANCE accelerates and the era of globalization brings new threats as well as new promises, the world of biotechnology is increasingly forced to confront bioethical issues that once would have been merely theoretical discussions of purely speculative issues in the distant future. This article is intended to provide a perspective on the general problem of ethical frameworks in social decision making and provide an introduction to three fundamental ethical systems: utilitarianism, Kantianism, and Rawlsian justice or fairness. The cytosine deaminase APOBEC3G, in the absence of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) accessory gene HIV-1 viral infectivity factor (vif), inhibits viral replication by introducing G→A hypermutation in the newly synthesized HIV-1 DNA negative strand. We tested the hypothesis that genetic variants of APOBEC3G may modify HIV-1 transmission and disease progression. Single nucleotide polymorphisms were identified in the promoter region (three), introns (two), and exons (two). Genotypes were determined for 3,073 study participants enrolled in six HIV-AIDS prospective cohorts. One codon-changing variant, H186R in exon 4, was polymorphic in African Americans (AA) (f < 37%) and rare in European Americans (f < 3%) or Europeans (f …
