Growth Of Stygobitic (Orconectes Australis Packardi) And Epigean (Orconectes Cristavarius) Crayfishes Maintained In Laboratory Conditions, Ann-Simone Cooper, Robin L. Cooper

This study reports on maintenance and growth of the cave crayfish, Orconectes australis packardi, and the epigean crayfish, Orconectes cristavarius, with laboratory conditions for 1 and 2 years. The O. a. packardi survived well compared to the O. cristavarius in captivity. The poor survival of the epigean species was probably due to unsuitable conditions. The epigean as well as the cave crayfish molted and grew in captivity, but without any significant difference in molt frequency between species. Synthesis, Characterisation And Biological Activity Of Novel Carboxylate Complexes Incorporating Phenanthroline And Benzimidazole Ligands, Denis O'Shea

This thesis reports results in two related areas: (1) the synthesis, characterisation and biological activity of soluble metal carboxylate complexes incorporating 1,10-phenanthroline and related ligands and (ii) the synthesis, characterisation and biological activity of Copper(II) complexes containing benzimidazole type ligands. 2,2-dimethylpentanedioic acid (2-dmepdaH2) and 3,3-dimethylpentanedioic acid (3-dmepdaHs) were reacted with copper (II) acetate to yield the novel soluble complexes [Cu(2-dmepda)(H2O)3]2 (1) and [Cu(3-dmepda)(H2)]3]2(2). Reaction of (1) and (2) with either 1,10-phenanthroline or 2,2’-bipyridine generated a series of novel soluble dicarboxylate complexes. Racial/Ethnic Differences In Hypertension And Hypertension Treatment And Control In The Multi-Ethnic Study Of Atherosclerosis (Mesa), Holly Kramer, Cong Han, Wendy Post, David Goff, Ana Diez-Roux, Richard Cooper, Sujata Jinagouda, Steven Shea

Most previous studies investigating the association between ethnicity and hypertension focused on differences between African Americans and whites and did not include other racial/ethnic groups such as Chinese or Hispanics. We used data from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA), a population-based study of 6814 adults without clinical cardiovascular disease, to examine the association between ethnicity and hypertension and hypertension treatment among white, African American, Chinese, and Hispanic ethnic groups. The prevalence of hypertension, defined as systolic blood pressure (BP) hypertension, was significantly higher in African Americans compared to whites (60% v 38%; P < .0001), whereas prevalence in Hispanic (42%) and Chinese participants (39%) did not differ significantly from that in whites. After adjustment for age, body mass index, prevalence of diabetes mellitus, and smoking, African American (odds ratio [OR] 2.21; 95% confidence interval [95% CI] 1.91-2.56) and Chinese (OR 1.30; 95% CI 1.07-1.56) ethnicity were significantly associated with hypertension compared to whites. Among hypertensive MESA participants, the percentage of treated but uncontrolled hypertension in whites (24%) was significantly lower than in African Americans (35%, P < .0001), Chinese (33%, P =. 003), and Hispanics (32%, P =. 0005), but only African-American race/ethnicity remained significantly associated with treated but uncontrolled hypertension after controlling for socioeconomic factors (OR 1.35; 95% CI 1.07-1.71). Diuretic use was lowest in the Chinese (22%) and Hispanic participants (32%) and was significantly lower in these groups compared with white participants (47%; P < .0001 for both comparisons). Programs to improve hypertension treatment and control should focus on a better understanding of differences in the prevalence of hypertension and hypertension control among minority groups in the United States, especially African Americans, compared with whites, and on techniques to prevent hypertension and improve control in high-risk groups. © 2004 American Journal of Hypertension, Ltd.

Winter temperatures may reduce energy costs for ectotherms. However, variable mid-temperate and low-latitude winters may interact with scaling of size, metabolism, and energy reserves to cause energy deficits and require trade-offs between foraging and predation. A dynamic optimization model explored how ration, fall fat, and both non- and size-selective predation influenced foraging (i.e., fast or forage) and energy allocation (i.e., length or fat) decisions that maximize winter survival of age-0 largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). During a mid-latitude (38° N) winter, a pond experiment in which age-0 fish occurred with or without adult conspecific predators tested a subset of …

Adrenomedullin (AM) is a 52 amino acid peptide that was first isolated from human pheochromocytoma. Subsequently, AM and its receptors are found to be distributed widely in the body, including the cardiovascular system. It belongs to a family of peptides that include calcitonin gene-related peptide. In blood vessels, AM causes vasodilation and regulates proliferation. It interacts closely with nitric oxide and has a role in the pathophysiology of hypertension, ischaemic heart disease, cardiac and renal failure. A non-peptide analogue of AM or gene therapy may be of potential therapeutic use. The role of AM in septicaemic shock also merits further …

The legislative session that concluded in the spring of 2004 brought much-needed hope and some tangible results to higher education in Tennessee. Realizing that work still must be done, we are greatly appreciative of the salary improvements that were approved for our faculty and staff. ETSU also succeeded in acquiring some $11 million in capital outlay funding to renovate the old Sherrod Library, providing critically needed space for our College of Nursing. At present, modern scientific publishing in the Arab world is in its developmental stage. Arab biomedical journals are less than 300, most of which are published in Egypt, Lebanon, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Yet, many of these journals do not have on-line access or are indexed in major bibliographic databases. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the magnitude and determinants of refractive error in school children, a study was undertaken to review the school screening and refraction data. METHODS: Trained physicians screened 416,157 students to evaluate their visual status and identified 28,765 students with defective vision. Refractionists refracted 25,733 (89.5%) of them, determined the refractive error and prescribed spectacles. Students with ocular co-morbidity and visual disability were re-examined and treated by the ophthalmologists.
