End-Of-Life Decision-Making Through Advanced Directives And Pallative Care, Beth Lada Morse Sep 2004

End-Of-Life Decision-Making Through Advanced Directives And Pallative Care, Beth Lada Morse

Student Scholarship

There are many socio-cultural and economic factors that shape discussions about treatment options for terminally ill patients. These factors include access to life prolonging medical options, societal priorities regarding the allocation of limited health care resources, cost constraints of payers and societal consensus that patient autonomy underpins life-sustaining treatment decisions. Worldwide Influence Of The French Civil Code Of 1804, On The Occasion Of Its Bicentennial Celebration, Xavier Blanc-Jouvan

Cornell Law School Berger International Speaker Papers

The French Civil Code (still called the Code Napoleon) is now two hundred years old. Its bicentennial has been celebrated this year in many countries. The reason is that is Code has experienced an extraordinary expansion throughout the world during the XIXth and XXth centuries. But how influential is it today? A certain weakening of its positions is due to a number of factors : legal (the abundance of models now available) and cultural (the regression of the use of French as an international legal language as well as the declining attraction of our universities in the formation of foreign …

Moral Education In The Digital Age, Edward E. Tywoniak Sep 2004

Moral Education In The Digital Age, Edward E. Tywoniak

Special Topics, General

Our natural human inclination to seek a moral understanding of the world is one of the oldest cultural narratives handed down since the beginning of recorded history. Much has been written on the ontic nature of moral absolutes and the rhetorical discourse of what makes a good citizen, but neither metaphysics nor politics has been totally prepared for the instantly ubiquitous nature of digital technology and its effect on societies in the contemporary age of the networked world. This paper reflects both a philosophical inquiry into the nature of technical systems through a set of anecdotal observations on civic engagement, …

Faculty Journal Articles

Writing more than a century ago, and with reference to his seminal work on collective representation, “Durkheim showed that a sense of security and progress depends on broad agreement both …
