Introduction, John Mark Nielsen Jan 2004

Introduction, John Mark Nielsen

The Bridge

In 1992 a conference was held in Aalborg, Denmark, sponsored by the Danes Worldwide Archives (now The Danish Emigration Archive). The purpose of this conference was to celebrate the centennial of the birth of Marcus Lee Hansen, an American historian of Danish descent. Hansen had played a major role in challenging historians to consider the wider forces of migration. Before him historians tended to focus on immigrants in America while paying little attention to the conditions that had motivated individuals to emigrate from the lands of their birth. Although Hansen did not discuss this experience using the terms of "push …

The Legacy Of The Danish Resistance In World War Ii, Joy Ibsen Jan 2004

The Legacy Of The Danish Resistance In World War Ii, Joy Ibsen

The Bridge

When I first heard about this conference, I immediately thought of this topic, because I believe the Danish Resistance in World War II provides a legacy of critical importance. It is one which can be of help in guiding our way through today's murky social and political problems as we grapple with terrorist threats and moral issues confronting us in this new millennium. It is a story of special significance to all Danes and Danish-Americans.

"A Lioness For Denmark"? Ambassador Eugenie Anderson And Danish American Relations, 1949-1953, John Pederson Jan 2004

"A Lioness For Denmark"? Ambassador Eugenie Anderson And Danish American Relations, 1949-1953, John Pederson

The Bridge

Thus did the respective Foreign Service leaders of Denmark and the United States assess Eugenie Anderson's tenure as America's ambassador to Denmark. Danish Foreign Minister Ole Bjorn Kraft made his remarks at the farewell dinner for Ambassador Anderson at Christiansborg Castle in 1953. Going from Red Wing, Minnesota to Copenhagen, she had served throughout most of the Korean War. The trappings and glamour of an ambassador's power and rank are seductive, particularly for political appointments. In extreme cases some ambassadors become as much an advocate for the country where they are stationed as the one they serve.3 In Anderson's case, …

The Impact Of American Jazz On Denmark: From The 1950s To The 1970s, Merete Von Eyben

The Bridge

This is how Leonard Malone, an American writer who lived in Denmark until his death in 1998, described Dexter Gordon's first appearance at Jazzhus Montmartre. "Harold Goldberg had arranged for Dexter to appear at the Montmartre, beginning the first week in October ... On the ninth of October 1962, Dexter finally appeared .. .late. Thin. Very thin. Tall. Very tall. Charismatic...When he finished playing ... the audience was in a state that could best be characterized as a delightful state of shock.Dexter was in town and was burning! From that evening on, Dexter became "' our man in Copenhagen."'

Immigration: Is It What It Used To Be?, Leland E. Molgaard Jan 2004

Immigration: Is It What It Used To Be?, Leland E. Molgaard

The Bridge

I became interested in this topic as I traveled around the country teaching. My wife and I work with teachers and social workers, training them to conduct a "strengthening families program" for parents and young adolescents. Many of these teachers and social workers serve recent immigrant families and, as I heard them tell of their work, they often told me that these families were unique because they were new immigrants. Yet as I listened, I was struck by how similar these immigrant families were to the families in the community where I grew up in northwest Iowa. The scripts were …

The Teenage Ambassadors: The Cultural Impact Of Institutionally And Privately Organized Exchanges Of Students, Young Farmers And Youth In General Between Denmark And The United States Since The End Of Wwii., Karsten Kjer Michaelsen

The Bridge

The little more than 300.000 Danes who emigrated to America between 1870 and World War II created a solid foundation for the cultural exchange between the United States and Denmark in many different ways. This exchange takes place on a family level as well as in a professionally managed way via a number of organizations which arrange longer visits in private homes for students, young farmers, and youth in general within the two countries. This paper deals with this aspect of the Danish-American cultural exchange in order to see how and to what extend the exchange students and other young …

Defining An Immigrant, Helle Mathiasen Jan 2004

Defining An Immigrant, Helle Mathiasen

The Bridge

Before emigrating in August 1965, I had already experienced America while a child living in Denmark. My first American memory is the smell of Wrigley's Doublement gum. I also remember the green gum package containing the thin, shiny silver paper with the jagged edge you had to remove in order to touch the delectable candy. For me, as a child, chewing gum was America. I was born in Vangede in 1940, the year the Germans invaded Denmark. During much of the five-year Nazi Occupation, our family lived in Sydhavnen, in Copenhagen, on Sjcel0r Boulevard number 3, in a onebedroom apartment. …

Danish Lutheran Churches In America: Contributions Of The United (Danish) Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1896-1960, Edward A. Hansen Jan 2004

Danish Lutheran Churches In America: Contributions Of The United (Danish) Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1896-1960, Edward A. Hansen

The Bridge

The United Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church was formed in 1896 by a merger of two Danish immigrant groups. One group, the "Blair Synod" had been excluded from the Danish Lutherans organized in America in 1872, in a controversy mainly involving the Bible as the Word of God. The second group, the "North Church," had been organized in 1884 by Danish members of the NorwegianDanish Evangelical Lutheran Church (founded in 1870). These Danes had withdrawn peaceably from their Norwegian brethren, in order better to serve immigrants from Denmark. By the 1940s this united church had changed from almost exclusive use of …

Relationships Among Belief In Divine Intervention, Belief In Good Luck, Paranormal Beliefs, Locus Of Control, Academic Ability, Cognitive Ability, And Gender, Jenni Rebecca Durham Jan 2004

Relationships Among Belief In Divine Intervention, Belief In Good Luck, Paranormal Beliefs, Locus Of Control, Academic Ability, Cognitive Ability, And Gender, Jenni Rebecca Durham

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationships among superstitious concepts, academic abilities, cognitive abilities, locus of control, and gender. This study explored the hypotheses that adherence to superstitious concepts is associated with a greater external locus of control and lower cognitive abilities. Consequently, little or no adherence to superstitious concepts results in an internal locus of control and higher cognitive abilities. This study also investigated hypotheses that an internal locus of control is associated with higher academic abilities, that females have higher superstitious belief than males, and that higher cumulative GP A is associated with higher …

Enronitis: Why Good Corporations Go Bad, Daniel J.H. Greenwood Jan 2004

Enronitis: Why Good Corporations Go Bad, Daniel J.H. Greenwood

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

The Enron problem - managers becoming extraordinarily wealthy while misleading shareholders, creditors and employees about the company's prospects and even driving it into the ground - is widely understood to be the result of too weak a legal mandate supporting the share-centered paradigm of corporate law. Paradoxically, it is also the predictable result of too strong a share-centered view of the public corporation. Share-centered corporate law creates the very problems it is meant to police. The single-valued profit maximization ethos of the share-centered corporation demands that managers teach themselves to exploit everyone around them: it is inevitable that some will …

Political Culture And Child Poverty: An Examination Of Western And Post-Communist European States, Paul Finch '04 Jan 2004

Political Culture And Child Poverty: An Examination Of Western And Post-Communist European States, Paul Finch '04

Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research

This paper examines political culture in relation to child poverty outcomes in Western European and post-communist Central and Eastern European (CEE) states. Although the European Union represents advanced industrial economies and has committed itself to the eradication of child poverty, variation in welfare policies as well as child poverty outcomes exist across Europe. Research has shown that egalitarian attitudes towards redistribution are linked with lower poverty outcomes. In addition to egalitarianism, this paper examines the relationship between gender roles and child poverty. The findings of this study indicate that support for feminist gender roles and an egalitarian distribution of wealth …

Organizational Forming In Amodern Times: Reinserting The Dynamic Into The Organizational, Paul Donnelly Jan 2004

Organizational Forming In Amodern Times: Reinserting The Dynamic Into The Organizational, Paul Donnelly

Conference papers

While there is an obvious concern that “new organizational forms” are appearing, and despite the topic receiving increased attention, scholars, as yet, have been unable to theorize, grasp or account for these new forms adequately. In continuing to look for the ‘new’ with ‘old’ lenses, we are seeing neither real departure from Weberian conceptualizations other than oppositional approaches still in search of an essential entity, nor much consideration given to the possibility that the paradigmatic approach to form is also part of the problem. In light of this, I posit that thinking within a modernist epistemological framework has served to …

To Cover Ancient Prejudice With The Palladium Of Scientific Argument: Women, Reproduction, Pseudo-Science, And The Alarm Of Race Suicide, 1870-1915, Sarah Hamilton '04 Jan 2004

To Cover Ancient Prejudice With The Palladium Of Scientific Argument: Women, Reproduction, Pseudo-Science, And The Alarm Of Race Suicide, 1870-1915, Sarah Hamilton '04

Honors Projects, History

In 1905 President Theodore Roosevelt presented the decreasing size of native born American families to Congress as "one of the greatest sociological phenomena of our time" and of"far greater importance than any mere political or economic question," although by that time the size of the American family had been shrinking steadily for about a century. He condemned the tendency towards smaller families as decadent, a sign of moral disease and, like others who worried about "race suicide," he specifically condemned women by categorizing those who avoided large families as criminals against the race and the objects of detestation by healthy, …

Soap Opera, Com Mercialisation An D The Proletarian Isation Of Cultural Production, Edward Brennan Jan 2004

Soap Opera, Com Mercialisation An D The Proletarian Isation Of Cultural Production, Edward Brennan

Articles

Abstract This article is based in a broader study of the production of Fair City, Ireland’s most popular television soap opera. The study argues that such shows are potentially important in civil society. They can promote discussion and debate on hidden or taboo social issues. They may thus inform public opinion. Until recently the potential role of soap opera in civil society has largely been overlooked. The research examined the social issues that Fair City could introduce to public discussion by examining its production process. It found the main limits on what the show could and could not say to …

Cmc Interpersonal Relationships: A Phenomenological Study Of Online Relational Stages, Traci Mccollom Dillavou

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Initiating and developing Internet interpersonal relationships is becoming increasingly popular as technology becomes more relevant and available. In fact, according the Pew Internet and American Life Project (PIALP) (1995) and IntelliQuest (1999), which monitors the penetration, use and appreciation of media in society, the number of Americans online increased from twenty-five million in 1995 to eighty-three million in 1999, an increase of nearly 60 million American onliners in 4 years. More recently, about 106 million American adults have used the Internet; in addition 73 percent of all American young adults between the ages of 12 and 17 have also used …

Latin American Resistance Movements In The Time Of The Posts, Glen Kuecker Jan 2004

Latin American Resistance Movements In The Time Of The Posts, Glen Kuecker

History Faculty publications

This article examines the flood of resistance movements in today’s Latin America. It places them in the context of the great economic changes that have swept the world since the end of the Cold War, what is often called “globalization.” Analysis focuses on the “newness” of our contemporary period, especially the importance of the transnational political and economic order. This essay illustrates how social scientists attempt to understand this moment of change, and emphasizes the limitations to their theory. Special emphasis is on the utility of New Social Movement theory as a tool for understanding today’s resistance movements as well …

Protecting Us From Pictures : Gender And Support For Legal Restrictions On Pornography, Elizabeth Lynne Chivers Jan 2004

Protecting Us From Pictures : Gender And Support For Legal Restrictions On Pornography, Elizabeth Lynne Chivers

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Research and debate concerning pornography has been controversial, primarily focusing on the perceived harmful effects. The current study addresses support for legal restrictions and the effect of gender on this support. Based on the internalization of gender roles, perspectives, and identities through socialization, gender is constructed differently for men and women. Because this socialization is constructed around an oppositional male-female dichotomy, men and women experience the world differently. While there have been previous research addressing gender differences, the gendered nature of attitudes merits further study.

The current study is based on data collected for 451 undergraduate students at the University …

Drug Use And Pool Performance : An Exploratory Study, Robert P. Hansen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This is an exploratory project assessing various aspects of drug use by Competitive Amateur Pool Players. Although the primary focus is on alcohol and its effects on performance, the prevalence of illegal narcotics use is also given considerable attention. The primary research tool was a questionnaire designed to (a) identify the Competitive Amateur status of the respondent, (b) identify the type of drugs used by pool players, and (c) determine the effects these drugs may have on pool performance. The questionnaire was distributed to 55 pool players and the statistical analyses of their responses were supplemented by a limited number …
