An Innovative General Education Program, Marie Mckendall Jan 2004

An Innovative General Education Program, Marie Mckendall

Seidman Business Review

In a recent survey of 110 graduating Seidman School of Business students, only 28% reported that they found it useful to take business courses outside their major and 21% said it was useful to take courses outside the business school. Eighty percent said that the applicability of any course to future jobs is one of the most important factors when they choose their courses. These perceptions, coupled with other results from the survey, indicate that our business school students have a very utilitarian approach towards education; i.e., they see their years at GVSU primarily as an avenue to earn a …

Preconceived Physician Attitude Toward Computerized Physician Order Entry (Cpoe): Implications For Successful Implementation, John Arthur Hoffstatter Jan 2004

Preconceived Physician Attitude Toward Computerized Physician Order Entry (Cpoe): Implications For Successful Implementation, John Arthur Hoffstatter

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There has been a societal and legislative push to implement computerized physician order entry (CPOE) systems throughout hospitals nationally in recent years due in large part to the public's awareness of an inordinate number of patient deaths due to medication errors in hospital settings. This mortality, and untold morbidity, became even more unacceptable when published findings suggested the majority of these 100,000 deaths each year could be avoided through the use of CPOE systems.

Yet acceptance has been slow and only a fraction of the hospitals have implemented this technology due to large start up costs, enormous technological requirements, and …

Perceptions Of Board Effectiveness In Selected Institutions Of Higher Education In Zimbabwe, Bonginkosi Zvandasara

Dissertations

Problem

The purpose of this study was to identify the level of board effectiveness in selected private and public universities in Zimbabwe as perceived by board members. Also, the study sought to determine the influence of such demographic variables as age, education level, and years of service on the seven factors of university functioning: institutional mission, institutional planning, physical plant, financial management, board membership, board organization and performance, and board/vice chancellor relations.

Method

The survey method was used to collect data. Respondents were asked to complete a 47-item questionnaire and indicate their level of agreement on each of the questions …

Experimental Simulations And Tort Reform: Avoidance, Error And Overreaching In Sunstein Et Al.’S ‘Punitive Damages’, Neil Vidmar Jan 2004

Experimental Simulations And Tort Reform: Avoidance, Error And Overreaching In Sunstein Et Al.’S ‘Punitive Damages’, Neil Vidmar

Faculty Scholarship

This article addresses tort reform claims made in Cass R. Sunstein, et al.'s Punitive Damages: How Juries Decide (2002)and related articles, research that was largely underwritten by the Exxon Corporation. Based upon a series of simulation experiments, those authors have made a general claim that juries are incapable of making coherent judgments about punitive damages. In this article I raise serious methodological problems bearing on the validity of the research, and, therefore, its ability to provide judges and legislators with useful information about juries and punitive damages.

Affirmative Action And Colorblindness From The Original Position, Guy-Uriel Charles Jan 2004

Affirmative Action And Colorblindness From The Original Position, Guy-Uriel Charles

Faculty Scholarship

In this Article, the author explores Grutter v. Bollinger from the vantage point of the colorblindness principle. He posits that the Grutter decision is noteworthy for two reasons. First, the Court rejected the argument that the Constitution is colorblind and that the classifications based on race are per se unconstitutional. Second, the Court explicitly recognized that racial categorizations are not all morally equivalent. The author uses classical liberalism as a heuristic for exploring whether the colorblindness argument is necessarily a moral imperative. He ultimately concludes that the Court adopted the correct approach in Grutter in rejecting the allure of the …

The Challenge Of Cooperative Regulatory Relations After Enlargement, Francesca E. Bignami Jan 2004

The Challenge Of Cooperative Regulatory Relations After Enlargement, Francesca E. Bignami

Faculty Scholarship

This paper conceptualises European governance as a continuous series of collective action games among national regulators. European administration is theorized as a set of mutually beneficial relations among independent regulators, rather than as a hierarchy of supranational institutions, courts, and national administrators. The collective action approach highlights the importance of certain factors in fostering regulatory cooperation and enabling the common market to become an administrative reality: repeated interactions, monitoring and sanctioning by the Commission and the courts, reciprocity norms, and trust. It also suggests that one of the most significant challenges of enlargement will be to establish cooperative regulatory exchanges …

What Developments In Western Europe Tell Us About American Critiques Of Corporate Criminal Liability, Sara Sun Beale, Adam Safwat Jan 2004

What Developments In Western Europe Tell Us About American Critiques Of Corporate Criminal Liability, Sara Sun Beale, Adam Safwat

Faculty Scholarship

Although corporate criminal liability has been recognized in the United States for nearly a century, contemporary academic commentators have questioned its legitimacy and argued that it is inferior to its alternatives: civil liability for the corporation and/or criminal liability for individual corporate agents. Other academic critics have attacked the present definitions of corporate criminal liability. In other words, although corporate criminal liability has also had its academic champions, it has been under attack in the United States. The situation in Europe poses a sharp contrast.

Avoiding Binary Thinking: Using Multiperspectivism As A Classroom Tool, Maria T. Ramos-Garcia Jan 2004

Avoiding Binary Thinking: Using Multiperspectivism As A Classroom Tool, Maria T. Ramos-Garcia

Bush Project Anthology

One of the greatest challenges teachers face in literature classes is encouraging students to go beyond the easy answers. That is especially true when students are studying literature in a second language. In their lower-division classes, they have become accustomed to providing the "right" answer applying the language they are learning. Therefore, when they enter a more advanced language class with a literature focus, they feel cheated when the instructor fails to tell them what the right answer is ... even if the issues involved are extremely complex. Students must learn that most literary works pose questions that have no …

What Does Covenant Mean For Relationships, Margaret F. Brinig, Steven L. Nock Jan 2004

What Does Covenant Mean For Relationships, Margaret F. Brinig, Steven L. Nock

Journal Articles

In this piece, we will first provide an analysis of covenant as we see it. We will continue with an original empirical test of whether covenant relationships differ from others, based upon new data from Louisiana, which offers both covenant and standard marriages. What we will try to argue and prove is that, even granting the differences between couples who choose covenant marriages from those who do not, something special happens to the relationship itself, or the spouses in it, when they choose the covenant marriage option. We conclude by relating what we have found to the more common choice …

Assessing The Impact Of Movies Upon An Individual's Image Formation Concerning A Given Destination, Jeeyeon (Jeannie) Hahm

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The process of watching a movie is a common way to be entertained in this day and age. There are multiple ways in which people can enjoy a movie ranging from the big screen at a commercial theater, on their home's television, or even in a car while driving. One outcome associated with watching a destination movie might be that the viewer will be compelled to visit or not the location portrayed in the movie. It is a primary assumption of this thesis that movies have the ability to create or change an individual's image of a destination by its …

Hard Times And An Uncertain Future: Issues That Confront The Field Of Emotional/Behavioral Disorders, Robert A. Gable Jan 2004

Hard Times And An Uncertain Future: Issues That Confront The Field Of Emotional/Behavioral Disorders, Robert A. Gable

Communication Disorders & Special Education Faculty Publications

In this article, I examine challenges to better preparing teachers of students with emotional/behavioral disorders (E/BD). Foremost among these challenges is the lack of agreement regarding a conceptual framework upon which to build quality prevention/intervention practices; instead, various authorities advocate disparate approaches, not all of which have empirical support. I assert that unresolved issues surrounding translating scientific research into classroom practice further hinder efforts to apply the most efficacious intervention options, as does our failure to exert control over the infrastructure of public education and the context in which we serve students with E/BD. Finally, I offer some modest proposals …
