An Ongoing Relationship With Theory Inside The Structures Of Tenure Track, Kwakiutl Dreher, Harriet Mcleod, Gary K. Perry Nov 2004

An Ongoing Relationship With Theory Inside The Structures Of Tenure Track, Kwakiutl Dreher, Harriet Mcleod, Gary K. Perry

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 9th Annual Conference (2004)

This panel asks how can junior faculty of color at a predominantly white research I institution stay versed and acquire new insights about theoretical principles? Tenure-track faculty are aware of expectations to produce scholarship, teach, and provide service worthy of tenure. But when, where, and more significant, with whom can the ongoing relationship with theory occur? What are the benefits of a community that has been developed to facilitate the dialogue on theory? Of paramount concern, how can the dialogues count towards tenure?

Still Not The Stars: African Americans As Social Minorities In Television Advertising , Karie L. Hollerbach, Walter B. Jaehnig

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 9th Annual Conference (2004)

Advertising can either provoke or prevent cultural change. It articulates ideas about social class, cultural values. and societal power. African Americans are still being presented in television advertising as members of social minorities who are less likely to speak, to assume positions of authority, or to personify dominant middle class values in America.

Judicial Power & Civil Rights Reconsidered, David E. Bernstein, Ilya Somin Nov 2004

Judicial Power & Civil Rights Reconsidered, David E. Bernstein, Ilya Somin

George Mason University School of Law Working Papers Series

Michael Klarman's "From Jim Crow to Civil Rights: The Supreme Court and the Struggle for Racial Equality" is an important contribution to the scholarly literature on both the history of the civil rights struggle and judicial power more generally. Klarman argues that for much of the twentieth century, the Supreme Court was very reluctant to rule in favor of African American civil rights claimants, and had little impact when it did.

Klarman is right to reject traditional accounts that greatly exaggerated the Supreme Court's willingness and ability to protect minorities. However, he overstates his case. The Court's views on the …

The Effects Of Militant Press On Nigeria's Democratic Evolution, Oluwaniran Malaolu Nov 2004

The Effects Of Militant Press On Nigeria's Democratic Evolution, Oluwaniran Malaolu

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This is an in-depth study of the Nigerian press, the ubiquitous behemoth which called itself the "defender" of Nigeria's national independence and the last "hope" of the common man. It's a bold attempt to critically examine its antecedents, its evolution or development especially the historical, political, technological and socio-economic events that had impacted its growth, its world views and ideologies. It's a thorough assessment of the press' influence on Nigeria's socio-economic and political development, as well as the suitability of its tactics and posturing toward attaining its set goals of economic and political emancipation of Nigerians. Most importantly, this study …

Colombian Immigrant Children In The United States: Representations Of Food And The Process Of Creolization, María Claudia Duque-Páramo Nov 2004

Colombian Immigrant Children In The United States: Representations Of Food And The Process Of Creolization, María Claudia Duque-Páramo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation research is to study the experience of adjustment of Colombian immigrant children to living in the U.S. In order to understand the changes they have experienced as immigrants, the research focuses on the ways in which they talk about the food they eat hereand on the foods they ate in Colombia. Because of the symbolic importance of food in the construction of ethnic and personal identities, a study of how the children talk about food illuminates the process of blending elements from the immigrant culture with those of the U.S.

Based on the symbolic interactionism …

Sports And The American Sacred: What Are The Limits Of Civil Religion?, Frank Ferreri Nov 2004

Sports And The American Sacred: What Are The Limits Of Civil Religion?, Frank Ferreri

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines whether American civil religion, in its enactment in daily American life, is cosmological. That is, it questions whether the sacred behind American civil religion is present in the physical-material realm and not in a transcendental principle or being. It is interested in why, seemingly, what is sacred in American culture is always what is happening here and now. This is evidenced by and manifested in multiple vehicles of the sacred in American culture. These vehicles include a range of institutions from economics to politics to religion to education. They also include entities such as the mass media, …

Westwinds: The Impact Of American Tv Shows On German Television And Culture In The 1960s, Gerd Horten Nov 2004

Westwinds: The Impact Of American Tv Shows On German Television And Culture In The 1960s, Gerd Horten

CUP Faculty Research

Coming on the heels of the economic “miracle,” as West German and international observers described the dramatic turnaround of the 1950s, West German consumer culture fully came of age in the 1960s. The most severe consequences of postwar deprivations like starvation, rationing or the focus on sheer economic survival became a thing of the past for most West Germans. The consumerist cornucopia promised particularly by the victorious United States, long desired and emulated, increasingly became a lived reality for quickly expanding segments of the population in the Federal Republic. From increased motorization and home ownership to a rapid influx of …

Patterns Of Early Lake Evolution In Boreal Landscapes: A Comparison Of Stratigraphic Inferences With A Modern Chronosequence In Glacier Bay, Alaska, Sherilyn C. Fritz, Daniel R. Engstrom, Stephen Juggins Nov 2004

Patterns Of Early Lake Evolution In Boreal Landscapes: A Comparison Of Stratigraphic Inferences With A Modern Chronosequence In Glacier Bay, Alaska, Sherilyn C. Fritz, Daniel R. Engstrom, Stephen Juggins

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The chronosequence approach, which infers temporal patterns of environmental change from a spatial array of modern sites, has been a major tool for studying successional processes. A model of early lake ontogeny in boreal landscapes, developed from a chronosequence of lakes in Alaska, suggests that long-term soil development and related hydrological change produce a loss of alkalinity and base cations, a decrease in pH, an increase in DOC and a transient increase followed by a decrease in lakewater nitrogen concentrations over time. We compare this model of lake ontogeny with patterns of change reconstructed from diatom assemblages in 10 sediment …
