Do You Have A Friend?: The Impact Of Personal Knowledge Of Someone With Aids On Attitudes Towards Aids, Leith Leonce Lombas Jan 2004

Do You Have A Friend?: The Impact Of Personal Knowledge Of Someone With Aids On Attitudes Towards Aids, Leith Leonce Lombas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The study of attitudes towards those with AIDS is relatively recent. Most studies have examined attitudes concerning health and medical concerns. Little research has focused on attitudes toward social and behavior concerns. The few that have focused on such attitudes have employed relatively small samples collected primarily out of convenience. The studies that have used national samples have primarily addressed public policy issues. Using national data from the 1988 General Social Survey, this paper examines the effects of personal knowledge about the AIDS virus and other attitudinal variables on four dimensions of social and behavioral concern for those with AIDS …

Couple Dynamic In Household Tourism Decision Making: Women As The Gatekeepers?, Ziene Mottiar, Deirdre Quinn

Articles

The purpose of this study is to explore household tourism decision making. There is an extensive literature on consumer choice in general. In terms of tourism, the main focus has been on motivational factors. However, as part of the emergence of a literature which studies the issues of tourism and gender, there are some authors who focus on holiday decision making. In this context the focus here is the distinctive roles and power relations within a couple. The study is exploratory in nature and employs a self-administered questionnaire. It is concluded that the overall consumption of a holiday is largely …

Dwelling Through Multiple Places: A Case Study Of Second Home Ownership In Ireland., Bernadette Quinn Jan 2004

Dwelling Through Multiple Places: A Case Study Of Second Home Ownership In Ireland., Bernadette Quinn

Books / Book chapters

The literature on second home ownership is by now quite extensive. While it may be also quite disparate, as Kaltenborn (1998) has claimed, identifiable areas within the general second home literature have begun to emerge. This paper focuses on one such area, that which explores the meaning of second home ownership. It re-visits one of the basic questions in the literature by asking why do people have second homes? This question has preoccupied several researchers over the last 20 years (e.g. Clout 1972, Jaakson 1986, Kaltenborn 1998, Chaplin 1999) and the ensuing literature has produced reasonably consistent findings by way …

From Rico Suave To Livin' La Vida Loca: A Decade Of Evolution For Latino Pop Stars, Fernando Delgado, Bernadette Marie Calafell

Critical Race and Ethnic Studies Faculty Scholarship

This essay surveys an arc of representation associated with the shifting projections of Latino male musical artists from the early 1990s to the end of the decade. This arc begins with the straightforward and seemingly uncomplicated, hence stereotypical, constructions of Gerardo and Kid Frost—two artists who were popular in the early 1990s—and ends with an analysis of the rather more complicated persona of Ricky Martin, whose public image has often challenged presumptions of Latino male identity and sexuality.

“I Fell Off [The Mothering] Track”: Barriers To ‘Effective Mothering’ Among Street-Level Prostituted Women, Rochelle L. Dalla Dr.

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Ecological theory and basic assumptions for the promotion of effective mothering among low-income and working-poor women are applied in relation to a particularly vulnerable population: street-level prostitution-involved women. Qualitative data from 38 street-level prostituted women shows barriers to effective mothering at the individual, community and societal levels. Suggestions for enhancing the lives and long-term well-being of prostituted women with children are included.

Respect And Equality: Transsexual And Transgender Rights, Stephen Whittle Jan 2004

Respect And Equality: Transsexual And Transgender Rights, Stephen Whittle

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)

The problem of who I legally am in the world I live in has been vexatious throughout my adult life. Like other transsexual people worldwide, I face an inadequate legal framework in which to exist. Some of us live within states and nations that recognise the difficulties and attempt to provide a route way through the morass of problems that arise; others barely, if not at all, even acknowledge our being. We are simply 'not' within a world that only permits two sexes, only allows two forms of gender role, identity or expression. Always falling outside of the 'norm,' our …

Should Employers Have The Ability To Monitor Their Employees Electronically?, Danielle Dorval Jan 2004

Should Employers Have The Ability To Monitor Their Employees Electronically?, Danielle Dorval

Seminar Research Paper Series

The purpose of this paper is to answer the question of whether or not employers should have the ability to electronically monitor their employees in the workplace. It stresses both the monitoring of computers, and also telephone wiretapping. The topic is examined through a legal, behavioral, and ethical perspective, to gain a more complete idea of the extent of the concern with electronic monitoring. Court cases were used to explain the different facets of the legal struggle between the employer’s right to monitor and the employee’s right to privacy. Several theories, including panoptic theory, were used to explain the behavioral …

Prospects Of Agricultural Entrepreneurship Among Resource Limited Farmers In The Central Appalachian Tobacco Belt, M’Kiaira Kimathi Miriti, Eric Scorsone Jan 2004

Prospects Of Agricultural Entrepreneurship Among Resource Limited Farmers In The Central Appalachian Tobacco Belt, M’Kiaira Kimathi Miriti, Eric Scorsone

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

Agricultural entrepreneurship is receiving heightened attention as a potential means for economic revitalization of communities adversely affected by changes in the agricultural sector. In particular, resource limited farmers in the Appalachian region of the United States have been hit by major changes in the tobacco industry. Very little is known about resource limited farmers respond to changing industry conditions and policy attempts to remedy structural change. Recently, the Commonwealth of Kentucky has attempted to assist farmers in adopting new farmbased enterprises to expand their income base. However, it is unclear about the factors that drive entrepreneurial or diversification activities among …

National Stereotypes In Teaching English As A Foreign Language, Radmila Popovic Jan 2004

National Stereotypes In Teaching English As A Foreign Language, Radmila Popovic

MA TESOL Collection

This thesis explores how to deal with lexically encoded national stereotypes in the second language classroom. I address this question starting with previous research on stereotypes, and discussing a principled approach to interrelating insights from a variety of paradigms and disciplines. Then I shift to the linguistic analysis of nationality words in English - phrases, idioms and proverbs, as well as connotations which these lexical items are capable of developing in certain contexts. Finally, I consider the implication of the findings for foreign language teaching, and suggest a pedagogical model for dealing with stereotypes in the language classroom.

Role-Related Identity Structure In Adult Women, Carolyn W. Graham, Gwendolyn T. Sorell, Marilyn J. Montgomery Jan 2004

Role-Related Identity Structure In Adult Women, Carolyn W. Graham, Gwendolyn T. Sorell, Marilyn J. Montgomery

Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling

This study explored women’s role-related identity structures through in-depth inter- views with 60 employed and stay-at-home women married to professional men. The employment, wife, mother, and homemaking roles of these women were examined to understand how married women integrate employment and family roles (i.e., wife, mother, and homemaking roles) within their identity. The women arranged the structure of their multiple roles in a variety of ways: Most structured their roles hierarchically, others intertwined several roles, some perceived their roles as equally important, a few indicated that they were “more than” their roles, and a small group of women were actively …
