The End Of Technology: A Polemic, Louis E. Wolcher Feb 2004

The End Of Technology: A Polemic, Louis E. Wolcher

Washington Law Review

This essay is a philosophical polemic against the essence of modern technology. The piece does not advance a Luddite's agenda, however, since it describes modern technology's essence as technological thinking, rather than as the manifold of technical instruments and processes. Technological thinking is not just careful planning towards well thought-out ends. Rather, it is an entire orientation to life, and as such it is a monstrosity: it relentlessly and heartlessly transforms the world's beings, including human beings, into measurable units of production and consumption that are constantly being judged for their contributions to "productivity." Nature is thus made into a …

A Case Study Of Four Location Traces, Guanling Chen, David Kotz Feb 2004

A Case Study Of Four Location Traces, Guanling Chen, David Kotz

Computer Science Technical Reports

Location is one of the most important context information that an ubiquitous-computing application may leverage. Thus understanding the location systems and how location-aware applications interact with them is critical for design and deployment of both the location systems and location-aware applications. In this paper, we analyze a set of traces collected from two small-scale one-building location system and two large-scale campus-wide location systems. Our goal is to study characteristics of these location systems ant how these factors should be taken into account by a potentially large number of location-aware applications with different needs. We make empirical measurements of several important …

Religious Identity And Consumption, Lanse Minkler, Metin M. Cosgel Feb 2004

Religious Identity And Consumption, Lanse Minkler, Metin M. Cosgel

Economics Working Papers

Consumption choices assist in solving the problem of how to convey and recognize religious identities. In the communication of an identity, individuals use the knowledge embedded in consumption norms, which restrict the range of choices to a smaller set and abbreviate the required knowledge for encoding and decoding messages. Using this knowledge as a shared framework for understanding, individuals with religious beliefs can choose consumption items that would not only strengthen their beliefs but also help them express the intensity of their commitments to these beliefs. Because individuals and societies have different beliefs, norms, commitments, and expressive needs, consumption choice …

The Frank J. Manning Certificate In Gerontology Alumni Survey: 21 Years Of Service To Elders, Nina M. Silverstein, Jenai Murtha, Donna Sullivan, May Jawad

Gerontology Institute Publications

The Certificate Program in Gerontology at the University of Massachusetts Boston, a large urban university, was established in 1979 as part of an Administration on Aging (AoA) grant to develop and expand services to the elderly citizens of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In 1984, a line item was added to the state budget by the legislature and governor establishing the Gerontology Institute at the University of Massachusetts Boston and ensuring the continuation of training, research, and policy and advocacy work on behalf of and with Massachusetts’ elders (O’Brien, 1996). Upon Frank J. Manning’s death in 1986, the program was renamed …

Privacy As Contextual Integrity, Helen Nissenbaum Feb 2004

Privacy As Contextual Integrity, Helen Nissenbaum

Washington Law Review

The practices of public surveillance, which include the monitoring of individuals in public through a variety of media (e.g., video, data, online), are among the least understood and controversial challenges to privacy in an age of information technologies. The fragmentary nature of privacy policy in the United States reflects not only the oppositional pulls of diverse vested interests, but also the ambivalence of unsettled intuitions on mundane phenomena such as shopper cards, closed-circuit television, and biometrics. This Article, which extends earlier work on the problem of privacy in public, explains why some of the prominent theoretical approaches to privacy, which …

Confidentiality And Juvenile Mental Health Records In Dependency Proceedings, David R. Katner Feb 2004

Confidentiality And Juvenile Mental Health Records In Dependency Proceedings, David R. Katner

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

Providing children's disclosures to their mental health therapists greater protection in juvenile dependency cases recognizes the importance of privacy in therapeutic communications. Numerous children are required by juvenile courts to divulge the most intimate details of their lives to mental health experts only to have those disclosures revealed in court proceedings. Reversing the presumption that children's mental health records may be discussed openly in dependency litigation and requiring courts to perform in camera reviews affords children the dignity and respect adults take for granted. Ensuring greater confidentiality for children's mental health records is one step the legal system should take …

Ownership Concentration And Corporate Performance On The Budapest Stock Exchange: Do Too Many Cooks Spoil The Goulash?, John S. Earle, Csaba Kucsera, Álmos Telegdy Feb 2004

Ownership Concentration And Corporate Performance On The Budapest Stock Exchange: Do Too Many Cooks Spoil The Goulash?, John S. Earle, Csaba Kucsera, Álmos Telegdy

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

We examine the impact of ownership concentration on firm performance using panel data for firms listed on the Budapest Stock Exchange, where ownership tends to be highly concentrated and frequently involves multiple blocks. Fixed-effects estimates imply that the size of the largest block increases profitability and efficiency strongly and monotonically, but the effects of total blockholdings are much smaller and statistically insignificant. Controlling for the size of the largest block, point estimates of the marginal effects of additional blocks are negative. The results suggest that the marginal costs of concentration may outweigh the benefits when the increased concentration involves "too …

Chicagoland Youth And Adult Training Center: Building Strong Relationships Betweel1 Faithbased Organizations, Govemn1ent And Corporations To Transform Low-Income Communities, Jose Wilson, Brian Banks

Special Topics, General

President George W. Bush's faith-based initiative has sparked increased interest in the role faith-based organizations can play in the development of low-income communities. Government is increasingly relying on religious groups to provide economic and moral development in communities, advocates argue, because faith-based organizations are well-organized, well disciplined groups that know communities. I I The following report describes Chicagoland Youth and Adult Training Center (CYATC), a three-year-old workforce development initiative created by faith-based organizations located in low-income communities, with Ford Motor Company and its' Chicago-area dealerships, and local government, and educational institutions. CYATC was started to help employers address their needs …

Measuring Prejudiced Attitudes Toward Mexicans In Latter-Day Saint Missionaries During Missionary Service In The American Southwest, Jared A. Montoya Feb 2004

Measuring Prejudiced Attitudes Toward Mexicans In Latter-Day Saint Missionaries During Missionary Service In The American Southwest, Jared A. Montoya

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the foundations of prejudiced attitudes toward Mexicans held by White Americans and to investigate a means of reducing it, paying specific attention to prejudice found within a subpopulation of White Americans. The origins of American prejudice toward Mexicans are outlined using both historical and psychological explanations. An understanding of these origins leads to the notion that increased favorable contact is the best method for reducing prejudice. A field study focusing on prejudice toward Mexicans among ecclesiastical volunteers demonstrated that missionary service can be considered a means of favorable contact. Eighty-one White American …

Putting "Sociology‟ At The Service Of The Counterterrorist State While Marginalizing Sociologists, David Baronov Feb 2004

Putting "Sociology‟ At The Service Of The Counterterrorist State While Marginalizing Sociologists, David Baronov

Sociology Faculty/Staff Publications

In leui of an abstract, here are the article's first two paragraphs:

In the long shadow of September 11, 2001, an enormous and sophisticated state apparatus featuring covert espionage, secret interrogations, and detentions without trials has been created for the ostensible purpose of defeating terrorism. The counterterrorist state operates with broad judicial discretion and minimal oversight or accountability. To safeguard a people’s freedom, it is said, one must occasionally limit that freedom. Benjamin Netanyahu warns that, “Making use of American freedom of speech and religion, of liberal immigration and visitation laws, and of the relative lack of surveillance which they …

Teaching In A Larger Social Context: Using Simulations To Demonstrate Socioeconomic Principles And Their Relevance To Law, Jeffrey Evans Stake, Kenneth Glenn Dau-Schmidt Feb 2004

Teaching In A Larger Social Context: Using Simulations To Demonstrate Socioeconomic Principles And Their Relevance To Law, Jeffrey Evans Stake, Kenneth Glenn Dau-Schmidt

San Diego Law Review

In this Article, the authors describe socioeconomic theory application to law simulations that require student competition or cooperation and which demonstrate problems that their areas of law are designed to address. Stake uses two socioeconomic concepts to introduce students to property. First, he has an exercise that uses the allocation of property rights in whales to illustrate the concept of rent seeking or the possibility that a competitive market may induce investors to spend more collectively than they can hope to recover. Second, he uses cognitive psychology to analyze adverse possession. Dau-Schmidt, in the second half of his paper with …

Socioeconomics helps students systematically examine those issues in ways that go beyond the anecdotal. Brinig teaches family law, and she uses empirical analyses to provide a richer understanding of divorce, cultural differences, and adoption.

Labor And Finance As Inevitably Transnational: Globalization Demands A Sophisticated And Transnational Lens, Timothy A. Canova, Claire Morre Dickerson, Katherine V.W. Stone

San Diego Law Review

They discuss the contribution of socioeconomics to their understanding of both the impacts of globalization on labor and finance, and potential responses to those impacts. In conclusion, the authors discuss the importance of consciously and explicitly both recognizing the consequences of globalization, and integrating socioeconomic concepts into our teaching of these areas of the law.

The Imperium Strikes Back: The Need To Teach Socioeconomics To Law Students, William K. Black Feb 2004

The Imperium Strikes Back: The Need To Teach Socioeconomics To Law Students, William K. Black

San Diego Law Review

Black, who teaches microeconomics and financial regulation at the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas, underscores the importance of socioeconomics as a critical component of modern economic reasoning. Black, who was a government regulator at the height of the savings and loan crisis, argues that knowledge of economics is critical to those who would influence public policy, and socioeconomists should not cede economics to the Chicago school.
