The Social Construction Of Workplace "Diversity", Brenda G. Shawver Mar 2004

The Social Construction Of Workplace "Diversity", Brenda G. Shawver

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This is a study of "workplace diversity" from a social constructionist perspective. The perspective holds that while human meaning is socially created, it is the social order which gives us resources for making this meaning. There is much literature about workplace diversity from objectivist standpoints that takes for granted the term "diversity." What is missing is a comprehensive understanding of diversity: what does this term mean? What does it conceal? I attempt to contribute to a better understanding of diversity by interrogating its construction in popular culture.

I analyze the content of an advertising supplement called "Diversity Works," published in …

What's Really Wrong With Compelled Association?, Seana V. Shiffrin Mar 2004

What's Really Wrong With Compelled Association?, Seana V. Shiffrin

ExpressO

What's Really Wrong With Compelled Association?

The article presents an original account of the value of freedom of association, one more intimately tied to freedom of speech values than the models of association implicit in much commentary and in such U.S. Supreme Court cases as Boy Scouts v. Dale and Roberts v. U.S. Jaycees. Standard models view the relationship between associations and free speech as instrumental. On these accounts, voluntary associations serve as sites for individuals with a defined point of view to congregate together and make their communication louder and more effective. While voluntary associations may sometimes serve this …

The Importance Of Corporate Models, Benedict C. Sheehy Mar 2004

The Importance Of Corporate Models, Benedict C. Sheehy

ExpressO

This article argues that the debate concerning the nature of the corporation is not finished and nor a mere intellectual exercise for interested legal academics. The current model of the corporation as an economic entity—the firm—has a number of imbedded value assumptions. Given the common territory between corporate law and economics, some scholars have come to identify the two as equal partners striving for the same ends. This is a serious error which has had and continues to have significant negative consequences for both the economic situation of the majority and justice in society. These value assumptions are being seriously …

The New, Old United Nations - Proposal Of An Interpretative Model, Paul Tan Mar 2004

The New, Old United Nations - Proposal Of An Interpretative Model, Paul Tan

ExpressO

On the anniversary of the unilateral strike against Iraq, we are no closer to a definitive understanding of whether the attack is or is not legal. Many critics have, with much eloquence, made arguments for and against preventive self-defense as a normative concept, and others have scrutinized the text of the relevant Security Council resolutions and the United Nation’s Charter with much care to ascertain the technical merits of both claims. While both approaches have shed much light on this particular debate, it has done little to place it within its larger context. Iraq (and many conflicts before) should have …

Courses selected were Art Appreciation -- ARTS 1100, Advanced Surveying -- ENGR 2502, and Introduction to Sociology -- SOCI 1101.

The project goal was subdivided into four objectives.
