Practioner- Heal Thyself! Challenges In Enabling Organizational Health, Kathyrn Goldman-Schyuler

Organization Management Journal

In order to elucidate my approach to organizational health, I explore the inter-relationship between organizational health and the consultant’s state of being in the context of writings that have influenced the development of my work as an organizational change consultant over the past 20 years: the behavioral sciences and less traditional sources, such as studies with Moshe Feldenkrais, the writings of GI Gurdjieff and the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, and recent research on the impact of meditation on leaders. This is placed in the context of Frost’s (1999, 2001) research on “toxic handlers”.

Validation Studies: Matters Of Dimensionality, Accuracy, And Parsimony With Predictive Discriminant Analysis And Factor Analysis, David A. Walker May 2004

Validation Studies: Matters Of Dimensionality, Accuracy, And Parsimony With Predictive Discriminant Analysis And Factor Analysis, David A. Walker

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Two studies were used as examples that examined issues of dimensionality, accuracy, and parsimony in educational research via the use of predictive discriminant analysis and factor analysis. Using a two-group problem, study 1 looked at how accurately group membership could be predicted from subjects’ test scores. Study 2 looked at the dimensionality structure of an instrument and if it developed constructs that would measure theorized domains.

Long Term Effects Of Lincoln’S Head Start Programs, Katie Taylor, Kendra Woodburn, Carolyn P. Edwards, Deila Steiner

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

The Lincoln Public Schools (LPS) Head Start program is administered federally out of the US Department of Health and Human Services. In 2002, a total of 380 LPS children aged 3-4 received Head Start services in center-based, home-based, and combination program options. Looking backwards in time, some of the long-term outcomes of its system of Head Start classrooms have been calculated, beginning in 1986. The purpose was to examine later correlates of improved school success, including higher attendance rates, lower mobility rates, improved academic achievement, and lower high school dropout rates.

Cultural Contradictions Of The Anytime, Anywhere Economy: Reframing Communication Technology, Nikhilesh Dholakia, Detlev Zwick

College of Business Faculty Publications

Technology-aided ubiquity and instantaneity have emerged as major goals of most information technology providers and of certain classes of users such as “road warriors”. New mobile technologies promise genie-in-a-bottle type near-magical qualities with anytime, anywhere access to information and services. While the complex science, systems, and economics of such technologies receive considerable attention from industry executives and researchers, the social and cultural aspects of these technologies attract less attention. This paper explores the oft-contradictory promises and pitfalls of anytime, anywhere technologies from a cultural standpoint. It makes suggestions for reinterpreting these technologies for greater human good.

What Does It Take To Get Tenure?, Annabelle Foos, Mary Anne Holmes, Suzanne O'Connell

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Data from the National Science Foundation and the American Geological Institute indicate that women geoscientists remain underrepresented at all levels in academia. In addition, the proportion of women geoscience faculty declines with increasing rank, from around 20 percent as assistant professors to 5 percent as full professors.

In 2001, we began a project to collect information that can help mentor women faculty early in their geoscience careers and improve their chances of obtaining tenure. We also wanted to provide institutions with information on retention, tenure and promotion procedures and criteria as they are practiced across the country.

Roadside Memorial Practices: An Examination Of Landscapes Of Commemoration In Warren County, Kentucky, Michael Briggs May 2004

Roadside Memorial Practices: An Examination Of Landscapes Of Commemoration In Warren County, Kentucky, Michael Briggs

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Roadside memorials commemorating the death of automobile crash victims are scattered throughout the Kentucky landscape. This persistent cultural practice contains symbolic elements oftentimes indicative of religious connotations. Because there is a constitutional separation of church and government in the United States, these memorials can prelude controversy if located on state-maintained rights-of-way. This study examines Warren County, Kentucky, and analyzes the spatial distribution of these memorials on the landscape and the cultural implications to society because of their ties to death and dying. Scientific research in various fields of psychology, sociology, folk studies, geoscience, and religious studies was analyzed, including religious …

Editor’S Reflections: Academic Indigenization, Honggang Yang May 2004

Editor’S Reflections: Academic Indigenization, Honggang Yang

Peace and Conflict Studies

Excerpt

The movement for academic indigenization has been growing swiftly in the social science fields over recent decades. From a historical, sociological perspective, for example, Lee (2000) recognizes that Western social sciences were implanted in East Asian countries like many other developing societies where there were abundant cultural traditions and indigenous frameworks of understanding human interrelations. As early as the 19th Century, several Chinese intellectuals had called for “Eastern Way and Western Technology” or “Chinese Body and Western Utility” in their search for solutions to “saving the nation” from feudal corruptions and imperialist invaders. These thinkers and reformers were trying …

Network Thinking In Peace And Conflict Studies, Alvin W. Wolfe

Peace and Conflict Studies

Developments in mathematics and social theory and in techniques of communication and computation have brought network analysis to a state where it can be practically applied over a broad spectrum. Surprisingly, this mode of analysis has not been adopted by practitioners and scholars of peace and conflict studies to the extent that it ought to be. Examples of types of analysis that could have important applications are given, using network concepts such centrality, structural equivalence, and regular equivalence.

Probing The Future Of Mandatory Retirement In Canada, Don Kerr, Peter Ibbott, Roderic Beaujot May 2004

Probing The Future Of Mandatory Retirement In Canada, Don Kerr, Peter Ibbott, Roderic Beaujot

PSC Discussion Papers Series

The future of mandatory retirement is at least partly driven by the changing demographics. In Canada, these demographics include slowing population growth, rapid ageing, declining rates of labour force participation, and slowing growth of the labour force. After reviewing the demographic trends and considering alternate scenarios in labour force participation, we consider the determinants of early departures from the labour force, and suggest scenarios that might reverse these trends. With a decline in labour force entrants, delays in early life transitions and possible reductions in retirement benefits, a trend to retire later would bring mandatory retirement into question.

Guest Editor’S Introduction: Controversies And Continuities In Management Studies: Essays In Honour Of Karen Legge, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This issue represents a moment of transition in the history of the Journal of Management Studies. After being involved with the Journal in a number of capacities for over 25 years, Karen Legge is retiring as a General Editor. We mark this event by publishing a collection of critical essays stimulated by her work as an influential writer and researcher in management studies. Whether as colleague, teacher or editor she has continually struck a balance between developmental mentoring, critical insight, sage service, and a sense of humour and enjoyment for each task she undertakes. Karen embodies many of those qualities …
