A View Of Sudanese Refugee Resettlement Through Nebraska’S Print Media, Mary Willis, Constance Fernald Oct 2004

A View Of Sudanese Refugee Resettlement Through Nebraska’S Print Media, Mary Willis, Constance Fernald

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The print media has the potential to educate the general public about newly arriving Great Plains populations, influence refugee resettlement programs, and motivate volunteers to assist in transitions. Thus, accuracy of news items is crucial to successful assimilation of new populations to host communities. In this paper, we provide results from a content analysis of eight Nebraska newspapers regarding Sudanese refugees. We focus on refugee population descriptors, cultural characteristics, resettlement issues, and refugee goals to determine what could be learned about refugees from Sudan if one used local print media. Consistent with theories of stereotyping, results suggest that limited, and …

Review Of American Arrivals: Anthropology Engages The New Immigration Edited By Nancy Foner, Mcc. Heyman Oct 2004

Review Of American Arrivals: Anthropology Engages The New Immigration Edited By Nancy Foner, Mcc. Heyman

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Immigration to the United States since 1965, usually labeled "the new immigration," has several distinguishing features. First, the predominant source nations are in Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, rather than Europe. The second is a new trend within this scenario, the diversification of destinations, such that migration involves not only Los Angeles and New York, but also numerous small cities in the Prairie and Great Plains states, locations that once received Europeans and Mexicans but have been little involved in international migration for decades. In order to understand the dramatic social and cultural changes stemming …

Concerns Of Hispanics And Service Providers In Southwest Missouri, James Wirth, Susan Dollar

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This descriptive study identifies the key concerns voiced by the Hispanic community and service providers in rural southwestern Missouri. Three surveys were conducted in 2001 with 381 Latino adults, Latino youth, and human service providers located in over 20 rural cities and towns throughout southwest Missouri. Demographic information, socioeconomic status, and mobility patterns of Latino respondents are profiled, and their housing, educational, and healthcare needs are reported. Language barriers, legal and documentation issues, a lack of job availability, and nonacceptance in the broader community are identified as key concerns of Latinos. Human-service providers identified language barriers, a lack of understanding …

Seeking Coherence And Integrity: Personal And Professional Demands And Expectations Of Senior Women Professors, Florence A. Hamrick, Mimi Benjamin Oct 2004

Seeking Coherence And Integrity: Personal And Professional Demands And Expectations Of Senior Women Professors, Florence A. Hamrick, Mimi Benjamin

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

This study of 26 senior women professors at a large research university suggests that, while their negotiation of professional and personal commitments involved calculated balancing acts and strategies, they primarily described searches for integrity and coherence in life. More effective personal management strategies, modified and more realistic expectations, and a refusal to dwell on past decisions were among the themes identified. Respondents described an almost uniform and longstanding self-sufficiency and acknowledged having more control over aspects of their work, lives, and time. However, for many, time was also increasingly spent on some level of attention to health, and retirement preparation.

Interdisciplinary Program Designed To Prepare Student Health Professionals For The Cultural Aspects Affecting Medical Service Develivery In Rural Areas, Denise G. Bender, Brett R. Braziel Oct 2004

Interdisciplinary Program Designed To Prepare Student Health Professionals For The Cultural Aspects Affecting Medical Service Develivery In Rural Areas, Denise G. Bender, Brett R. Braziel

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Minorities are significantly underrepresented in the medical professions as compared to the US population as a whole. This discrepancy highlights the need to prepare students to practice in a culturally competent manner. This is especially true for those students who plan to practice in rural areas. Rural practice requires not only the skill of cultural competence, but also the ability to work with other disciplines as part of a team, due to the shortage of health professionals. This article outlines a month-long clinical rotation developed by the health professions programs in Oklahoma and funded through a grant to Oklahoma’s Area …

Etsu Today - Fall 2004, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University

ETSU Today [magazine]

The legislative session that concluded in the spring of 2004 brought much-needed hope and some tangible results to higher education in Tennessee. Realizing that work still must be done, we are greatly appreciative of the salary improvements that were approved for our faculty and staff. ETSU also succeeded in acquiring some $11 million in capital outlay funding to renovate the old Sherrod Library, providing critically needed space for our College of Nursing. We have the largest nursing enrollment in Tennessee, and we have plans to increase enrollment in the B.S.N. program by 50 percent, a major step in our continued …

Preparing Teachers For Family Centered Services: A Survey Of Preservice Curriculum Content, Michelle Rupiper, Christine Marvin Oct 2004

Preparing Teachers For Family Centered Services: A Survey Of Preservice Curriculum Content, Michelle Rupiper, Christine Marvin

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

A family-centered approach is recommended as best practice in the field of early intervention. However, recent research suggests that some professionals in the field do not always implement familycentered services. This study investigated the content taught to pre-service early intervention/early childhood special education students regarding family-centered services. Eighty-two faculty members from institutions of higher education across the U.S. rated the importance of and the extent to which they taught five categories of content associated with family-centered services. Content associated with Knowledge of Families, IFSP/IEP Skills, and Respecting Diversity were taught significantly more than Communication Skills and Knowledge of Team Work. …

Bridges And Barriers To Housing For Chronically Homeless Street Dwellers: The Effects Of Medical And Substance Abuse Services On Housing Attainment, Tatjana Meschede Oct 2004

Bridges And Barriers To Housing For Chronically Homeless Street Dwellers: The Effects Of Medical And Substance Abuse Services On Housing Attainment, Tatjana Meschede

Center for Social Policy Publications

In the winter of 1998/99, after the deaths of 16 homeless people in the streets of Boston attracted wide attention by the media, the Commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH), Dr. Howard Koh, convened a group of I stakeholders serving the homeless street population. The goal of this MDPH Homeless Taskforce was to reduce the number of homeless people dying on the streets as well as to improve service delivery to those homeless individuals most at risk of dying. A wide range of individuals serving or encountering the homeless street population, including homeless outreach teams, law enforcement …

Jones, Pete And Blow, Kurtis, Bronx African American History Project Oct 2004

Jones, Pete And Blow, Kurtis, Bronx African American History Project

Oral Histories

Summarized by Alice Stryker

Pete DJ Jones moved to the Bronx in 1970 to Anderson Ave and 164th street, where he still lives. He initially was a basketball player and moved to NYC for better playing opportunities. Kurtis Blow first heard Pete in the early 70’s. He was amazed at the fact that Pete was using two turntables, instead of 1, which was traditionally used, and that music was continuously playing.

In North Carolina, Pete fooled around with record players and microphones and would “play DJ”. He eventually started playing at parties. When he moved to the Bronx he …
