Measuring Coping : Evaluating The Psychometric Properties Of The Cope, Kathleen J. Donoghue Jan 2004

Measuring Coping : Evaluating The Psychometric Properties Of The Cope, Kathleen J. Donoghue

Theses : Honours

Research into coping has been hampered by the limited psychometric properties of the available instruments, particularly with respect to the internal validity of multidimensional measures. The purpose of this paper was to review research relevant to the measurement of coping, and to evaluate the COPE based on this literature. The COPE is a widely used multidimensional self-report instrument containing 15 subscales to measure different ways of coping. Claims that the COPE has good factorial validity warrant further examination in light of widespread criticism aimed at coping checklists in general. The present review found mounting evidence that the internal structure of …

'Married' To The Military : The Experiences Of Partners Of Australian Defence Force Members, Ngaere B. Stewart Jan 2004

'Married' To The Military : The Experiences Of Partners Of Australian Defence Force Members, Ngaere B. Stewart

Theses : Honours

This paper provides a review of the literature in order to understand the experiences of the partners of Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel. A brief overview of the early research in this area sets the context for a review of the demands of the ADF lifestyle, such as geographic mobility and lengthy operational separations from the ADF member. Military-related injuries and illness is another demand of the ADF that is also discussed. These demands are then examined within a theoretical framework of incorporation theory; the work/family fit and the family life cycle models. The overall satisfaction of ADF partners with …

Using Sem To Develop A Model For Educators Of Children Who Are Exposed To The Trauma Of Violence, Rosalind Duplechain Jan 2004

Using Sem To Develop A Model For Educators Of Children Who Are Exposed To The Trauma Of Violence, Rosalind Duplechain

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

This study used Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to develop a teacher-friendly model for understanding the relationship between children’s exposure to traumatic events, such as violence exposure, and their school achievement. With a sample of 146 urban elementary (grades 2-5) children, three variables (mental health behaviors, performance-related behaviors, and standardized achievement) were examined. The model suggested that children who are exposed to violence in Year I were more delinquent and ultimately underachieved in reading in Year II. This model should help teachers identify students exposed to violence and address their social and academic needs.

2004 Rosabeth Moss Kanter Award For Excellence In Work-Family Research Publication, Shelley M. Macdermid Jan 2004

2004 Rosabeth Moss Kanter Award For Excellence In Work-Family Research Publication, Shelley M. Macdermid

Center for Families Publications

Over the past few decades there has been an explosion of research on the relationships between work and non-work life. Researchers studying these issues come from many disciplines and professions, resulting in fragmented awareness of one another's work. In addition, exchanges of research information among scholars, consultants and corporate practitioners are limited. Many research studies are not well-grounded in theory, slowing the generation of new knowledge. As a result, it has been difficult to develop shared standards for research quality and to avoid redundance in the research literature. Some excellent studies have failed to have impact because of lack of …

Models Of Inclusion In Child Care: Child Care That Works For Children With Emotional And/Or Behavioral Challenges: Family Member Perceptions, Shane Ama, Eileen M. Brennan, Sara Berman, Jennifer R. Bradley Jan 2004

Models Of Inclusion In Child Care: Child Care That Works For Children With Emotional And/Or Behavioral Challenges: Family Member Perceptions, Shane Ama, Eileen M. Brennan, Sara Berman, Jennifer R. Bradley

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Although 5-10% of employed parents care for a child with emotional or behavioral challenges (EBCs) (Emlen, 1997), family support resources are notably lacking. A recent focus group study of 41 working parents (Rosenzweig, Brennan, & Ogilvie, 2002) found child care to be particularly difficult to find and maintain for families that included children with EBCs. Participants reported a number of barriers to child care arrangements that could successfully meet their family's needs. First, since few qualified providers had the expertise to meet the needs of children with EBCs, arrangements were difficult to find. A combination of the lack of quality …

The Relationship Of Consideration And Structure Leadership Styles To Employee Job Satisfaction In Nonprofit Child Care Organizations, Stephanie L. Brooke Jan 2004

The Relationship Of Consideration And Structure Leadership Styles To Employee Job Satisfaction In Nonprofit Child Care Organizations, Stephanie L. Brooke

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This study examined the relationship between leadership style, as measured by the Leadership Opinion Questionnaire, and job satisfaction, global job satisfaction, and satisfaction with supervision, as measured by the Job Satisfaction Survey. Past research suggests that leaders with a considerate style of leadership are associated with greater job satisfaction compared to leaders who initiate structure. Although many studies of leadership style have been conducted in for-profit organizations, the objective of this research was to better understand the relationship of leadership style to job satisfaction in nonprofit child care centers. Eight directors in nonprofit child care centers in Rochester, New York, …

A Narrative Exploration Of Personal Factors And Organizational Contexts In The Development Of Local Leadership, Kristine Leigh Chadwick Jan 2004

A Narrative Exploration Of Personal Factors And Organizational Contexts In The Development Of Local Leadership, Kristine Leigh Chadwick

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation analyzed the factors contributing to the development of leadership in voluntary community organizations, created as part of a community-level substance abuse prevention project known as the Partnership, and explored the role of intermediary support organizations in nurturing the development of community leaders. Through interviews with team leaders and staff from the support organization, and analysis of program records, this research examined the empowering of individuals and the development of empowering organizations. The development of local leaders in neighborhood, grassroots, or other voluntary organizations has received little attention until recently. Previous studies of empowerment of local leaders have noted …

A college is a community of learners, and the best instruction takes place in intimate, rigorous, active conversation--a student, a teacher, a log. I hope you'll enjoy these portraits of collaborative education: there are some wonderful exemplary illustrations here. But I also encourage you to mull the fact that for each such picture in Profile there is literally hundreds of equally inspiring but publicized collaborative ventures. All these profiles in learning are UMM at its best!

Social Interaction And The Health Insurance Choices Of The Elderly, Eldar Beiseitov, Jeffrey D. Kubik, John R. Moran Jan 2004

Social Interaction And The Health Insurance Choices Of The Elderly, Eldar Beiseitov, Jeffrey D. Kubik, John R. Moran

Center for Policy Research

Using data from the 1998 wave of the Health and Retirement Study, we examine the effect of social interactions on the health insurance choices of the elderly. We find that having more social interactions, as measured by contacts with friends and neighbors, reduces the likelihood of enrolling in a Medicare managed care plan relative to purchasing a medigap policy or having coverage through Medicare alone. Our estimates indicate that social networks are an important determinant of the health insurance choices of the elderly and provide suggestive evidence that "word-of-mouth" information sharing may have played a role in the preference of …

Recognition And Development Of Hope For South African Organizational Leaders, Fred Luthans, René Van Wyk, Fred Walumbwa Jan 2004

Recognition And Development Of Hope For South African Organizational Leaders, Fred Luthans, René Van Wyk, Fred Walumbwa

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

The significant challenges faced by South Africa at present are well known. How to deal with the problems from a political and economic perspective abound, but taking a psychological approach has been neglected. This paper proposes a positive approach to South African organizational leadership based on the psychological capacity of hope. After giving a brief background on the context surrounding South African organizations, the theory, research, and application of hope relevant to organizational leadership in the “Rainbow Nation” are presented and analyzed. Such an overlooked positive approach represented by hopeful organizational leaders seems needed at this juncture of South Africa’s …

Client Satisfaction And Goal Achievement: From A Client's View At Cambridge Interfaith Family Counselling Centre, Dawn Diane Yarker

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Qualitative interviews were conducted with eleven clients, former and active, at CIFCC (Cambridge Interfaith Family Counseling Centre) to understand how client satisfaction and goal achievement in therapy were related. Content analysis of the interviews revealed that satisfaction with the counsellor, especially rapport building, is the greatest contributory to client satisfaction. This observation is discussed for counselling practice.

The Relationship Between Family Burden Ratings And Follow-Up Psychotic Symptom Levels In Schizophrenia, Alison Golob Jan 2004

The Relationship Between Family Burden Ratings And Follow-Up Psychotic Symptom Levels In Schizophrenia, Alison Golob

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Previous research has demonstrated that, in schizophrenia, the two most salient psychosocial variables in the prediction of symptomatic outcome for the patient are Expressed Emotion and Family Burden. In an early study, Family Burden was found to be a better predictor of relapse than Expressed Emotion. Family Burden is a measure of patient behaviours, not symptoms, and the degree to which they bother the relative. In that study, Family Burden is measured by the Perceived Family Burden Scale, (PFBS). In the same study, using a sample of 38 male patients with schizophrenia, two variables were found to be significant predictors …

Examining Predictors Of Level Of Attendance In A Group Treatment Program For Men Who Abuse, Carrie Pollard Jan 2004

Examining Predictors Of Level Of Attendance In A Group Treatment Program For Men Who Abuse, Carrie Pollard

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Violence against women by their male partners is a prevalent problem in North America; therefore, it is important to provide treatment for men who abuse. Although group treatment has been found to be effective in reducing men's abusive behaviour, the high attrition rates common in such groups limit the number of men who benefit from treatment. This present study examined sociodemographic, experiential, and program-related variables to determine the predictors of level of attendance in a group treatment program for men who abuse. Data were collected from 243 men who attended either a 16 week group or a 24 week group …

Humour And Marital Quality: Is Humour Style Associated With Marital Success?, Melissa Johari Jan 2004

Humour And Marital Quality: Is Humour Style Associated With Marital Success?, Melissa Johari

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Humour has been postulated to be an important variable contributing to success in romantic relationships. Most past research has tended to view humour as a unitary construct with invariably beneficial relationship effects (e.g., Hampes, 1992). However, if used maladaptively, humour may be a detriment to relationship success (Cohan and Bradbury, 1997). The purpose of the current study was to determine the relationship between adaptive/positive and maladaptive/negative styles of humour and quality of marriage. It was expected that positive humour is associated with higher marital quality, while negative humour is associated with lower marital quality. A secondary goal was to examine …

A Qualitative Study Examining The Experiences Of Children Living In A Residential Treatment Program, Elisabeth Robson Jan 2004

A Qualitative Study Examining The Experiences Of Children Living In A Residential Treatment Program, Elisabeth Robson

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The purpose of this research project was to gain an understanding of the child's experience living in residential treatment and to explore the child's understanding of treatment and the therapeutic process. Limited information on this topic has been found in the research literature, therefore this study was also an attempt to add qualitatively to the body of knowledge on residential treatment, incorporating the child's perspective. Six children living in a residential treatment centre in Southwestern Ontario were interviewed. Their interviews were audio-taped, transcribed and analyzed using the grounded theory techniques of Strauss and Corbin (1998). Demographic information and treatment goals …
