Diversity And Homogeneity In American Culture: Teaching And Theory, Claudia Strauss
Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research
In teaching, as in any kind of cultural production, you can look at content, or you can look at reception. Here I want to talk about both: the content of what to say about diversity and sharing in U.S. culture, and how that may be received.

Review Of Preserving The Sacred: Historical Perspectives On Ojibwa Midewiwin By Michael Angel, Katherine Pettipas
Review Of Preserving The Sacred: Historical Perspectives On Ojibwa Midewiwin By Michael Angel, Katherine Pettipas
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
This volume is a critical historiography of the nature and meaning of the Midewiwin as it was, and still is, practiced by southwestern, western, and northern Anishinaabeg (Ojibwa or Chippewa) in both Canada and the United States. A self-described "culturally sensitive outsider," Angel has approached his subject from an interdisciplinary perspective, drawing heavily from religious studies and historic and ethnographic documentation. The origins and functions of the Midewiwin are examined within the contexts of Anishinaabeg religion and society. Angel takes issue with the classification of the Midewiwin as a "revitalization movement" or a "crisis cult" by demonstrating that the "essential …

An Examination Of The 1829 “Articles Of The Church Of Christ” In Relation To Section 20 Of The Doctrine And Covenants, Scott H. Faulring
BYU Studies
The 1829 "Articles of the Church of Christ" is a little-known antecedent to section 20 of the Doctrine and Covenants. This article explores Joseph Smith's and Oliver Cowdery's involvement in bringing forth these two documents that were important in laying the foundation for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Interactions Between The Local Government And The Traditional Authorities, Tara Boulton
Interactions Between The Local Government And The Traditional Authorities, Tara Boulton
African Diaspora ISPs
This study looks at the interactions between the traditional authorities and the local government in Ghana. By first approaching the interface from the historical context, a foundation is crated for better understanding current perceptions. Members of the two systems were interviewed on their roles in development and maintenance of law and order at the local level. These interviews identified present areas of conflict, enabling the prescription of more efficient interactions in the future. The study concludes that stress on the local government could be effectively alleviated through increased conversation with the traditional authorities, specifically by defining representation of the traditional …
The Birth Of A Nation As American Myth, Richard Salter
The Birth Of A Nation As American Myth, Richard Salter
Journal of Religion & Film
The Birth of a Nation was one of the most important films of all time, both for its technical and aesthetic achievements and for its enduring legacy of racism. This paper uses Bruce Lincoln's approach to myth as a form of discourse and Robert Bellah's notion of civil religion to show how Birth might be understood as a mythic component of American civil religion. From this perspective, Birth serves as a paradigmatic story of American origins rooted in ideas of white supremacy. At the end of the article Oscar Micheaux's work, Within our Gates, is used to briefly demonstrate filmic …

The Parable Of The Prodigal Son, Karen P. Sames Osb
The Parable Of The Prodigal Son, Karen P. Sames Osb
School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses
This project began with the investigation of the role of parables in the teachings of Jesus Christ. I researched the function of parables and the different levels of interpretation. Then I studied the Parable of the Prodigal Son in depth looking at the parable through a window into the past and reflecting on the meaning that the parable had in history and then looking at it like a reflection in a mirror to see what the parable has to say to us today. The research included a look at the characters of the parable and the roles they played in …
